The question answered: No surgery

National Review reports that it has received an unequivocal answer from the Mike Huckabee campaign to its question about whether his weight-loss was assisted by surgery.

Answer: No.

So that's that, right?

I'd still be interested if he participated in the settlement of the class action lawsuit over the alleged heart-damaging effects of the phen-fen weight loss drug.

Of course the wingnuts at NRO miss the major point: he did it using Government Financed health care.
Now how' about extending those benefits to the entire society as John Kerry recommended?

Hey, I want my boobs hitched up so I don't have to roll em up to stuff in a bra.

What's a lie for Huckabee or his camp to tell. He need to get off that Christian kick because all of this is going to come back to haunt him.

GOOD one eL!! I distinctly recall that his weight skyrocketed, starting just AFTER the whole fen-fen issue became public...because I made that connection BEFORE it became a popular (public) discussion topic. If he didn't participate in the settlement, must mean he's REALLY such a Christian! ...not to mention how many of the DREADED lawyer-class were thusly enriched.

Government-financed lapband?

jazzy, my sweet, sassy, little darlin', if you'll get the Frenchman out of the house, I'll gladly zip over there and hep ya roll them boogers up!

Guess that UAMS nurse was lying to me about him being brought in in the wee hours of the morning for his "check up." Staff was sworn to confidentiality, etc. Oh well, her story was too good to be true anyway. He's still a right-wing hypocrite whether he's a 32 or a 48 in the waist.

Max, your obsession with this aspect of Huckabee's story has gone over the top. Let me be clear. I am a fan of the Arkansas Times. I am not a fan of Mike Huckabee. But your only interest on this one seems to be in keeping the pot stirred. The other day, it was, "Be sure and don't limit your questions to one surgery." Today, it's "Maybe he took Fen-Phen." The other day, you linked to a site that said, ok, he needs to answer the question straight up. Well, now, he has answered the question straight up. HIs spokesman said he did not have bariatric surgery.

Now, if you have evidence to the contrary, then put it out here and let it be examined. But if all you have is rumors or the kind of wild analyses like the blogger that you linked to the other day (or maybe you linked to someone who linked to that blogger) who made up a bunch of statistics, multiplied them together, and conclusively announced that the chances that Huck really lost weight through diet and exercise were 1 in 100,000 (or something like that), then it just seems like you're spouting off stuff to keep the national press following Huck coming back to your blog.

I agree that it is hard to believe that he lost 110 pounds with diet and exercise. And I've heard all the rumors. But now that he has answered the question, I don't understand the news value here unless someone can come up with some credible information to indicate that he is lying.

Like calmwriter said in his last sentence, Huck's un-desireability as a Presidential candidate is the same no matter his waist size. Let's focus on that and stop inventing storylines.

ARK. BLOG: Re the surgery, I merely stated the response to the question on surgery. I'm not stirring that pot at the moment. The fen-phen question is unrelated. He's indicated he tried diet pills during his first, ultimately unsuccessful weight loss. There was a massive class action lawsuit over a particularly diet drug combination In the course of it, questions were raised about the tactics of some of the lawyers who sought settlements for clients. Some people indeed discovered the medication might have caused serious heart damage. It's a question about both health and willingness to use the tort system. No apologies here for that question.

The spokesman said, "No, the governor did not have bariatric surgery."

I wonder what kind of surgery he did have?

blueinaredstate, Huckabee's likely lie on this issue is highly relevant to his qualification to be President of the United States. Weight loss surgery may have devastating physical and mental consequences, which voters must consider. Additionally, if Huckabee's claim that it was strength of will that enabled him to overcome his obesity is a lie, it is yet another example that the man does not possess the character we need to lead us in these dangerous times.

Huckabee is a demonstrated liar. His claim that he did this on his own is improbable at best. The question is legitimate, it would be foolish to take him at his word.

Learningcurve--I agree that if Huck is lying about this issue which he has emphasized so heavily (pun intended), then it says a alot about his character and fitness to be president. A lie about this issue is not acceptable. I even said that I agreed that his claims were hard to believe.

As for the health effects, I'm not sure that's a big issue. I have known people who had bariatric surgery and were able to function quite well, although their eating and other activities were limited. I don't see why someone could not be president for four or eight years and do ok, especially since they would have the best medical care that you and I can pay for.

My point was that throwing out baseless accusations described as questions is intellectually dishonest. Everyone was clamoring for a straight answer. Now we have one. Until someone comes forth with some credible evidence to the contrary, that answer stands and it seems to me that Huck is under no obligation to prove that he did not have the surgery.

As for Max's fen-phen pondering, I just think it's an irresponsible tactic. I wonder if Huckabee has ever committed a crime. I wonder if Huckabee pays his taxes. I wonder if Huck has been faithful to Janet. I wonder if Huck gets secret help finishing those marathons. Etc. Etc. A bad answer to any of these issues could disqualify him from running for president. But until you have some credible basis to put the questions out there, it's irresponsible to make the accusations in whatever form they may take.

ARK. BLOG: His own writing, quoted here by one of his supporters, said he'd tried pills for weight loss. He had one dramatic weight loss that was quickly regained. There's ample ground for the question. It's simply a health issue and a philosophical issue. No big deal. People thought the pills were safe. They weren't. And the effects were transitory.

Be still my heart!!!!!!!!!!!
But, Durango, you told me you didn't drive anymore so how could you zip over here???
Frenchie asked if you want him to pick you up?????
Oh Lord.....might as well laugh as cry.
I always got in trouble, in church, for getting the giggles, and I was 35....................
and..........sitting in the choir loft.

My 65-year-old nephew will drive me over, jazzy. He's a great driver, and also knows how to keep his trap shut. Get that Frenchman outta da house NOW and call me!

I lost your phone number.

It is 1-800-I'mOnFire.

Jazzy and Durango you crack my stuff up!!
the state is supporting liquid diet if that doesn't work lapband surgery for state employees.
i attended one of the introduction seminars. clarification on support. employee pays approx $100per week for the supplements/food insurance covers the counseling costs.

ps. the problem I have with Huckabee is selling a book on health and fitness. I do NOT believe that he lost all of his weight strictly by diet and exercise. He is a hypocrite, in my opinion worse than any president getting a blow job while on the job.

Cherie, I dialed 1-800-I'M ON FIRE and got THE SHADY REST NURSING HOME.
Why don't you try to call me, ask a nurse to help you..............
1-800-DA LONG BOOBS

Cher,,,,make it quick...........I go to bed at 9 after Frenchie helps me into my adult
diaper.........I think they are called Depends............that is another operation I need the
state to pay for,,,,,,,,,,a bladder lift,,,,,so I don't pee the bed all night after heavy
drinking all day.
Bon Nuit

blueinaredstate, the supposition is not baseless. Huckabee's claim that he has lost the weight with no surgical intervention is far more ridiculous.
