Clinton press coverage

Terrence Smith, formerly of PBS, weighs in:

But whatever the case, Hillary and her supporters have reason to complain about the tone of their press notices, if not the substance. Of course, when a front-runner begins to stumble, the coverage is always more critical. And reporters are as subject to Clinton-fatigue as anyone else. But the attacks on Hillary have seemed over-the-top in recent weeks. A barely-suppressed glee often creeps into the commentary when Hillary loses another primary or caucus.

By contrast, has the coverage of Obama been overly sympathetic? Have reporters romanticized the junior Senator from Illinois? Have they glamorized him and his wife? Did they exaggerate the significance of Ted Kennedy’s endorsement? Have they given him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to his meager experience?

Of course they have.

ALSO: Media Matters has much to say on hate Hillary speech on MSNBC. I don't think even Brummett would defend Chris Matthews. Would he? Noted: This piece also recounts hate Obama remarks on the cable channel and also jabs at the response by Bill Simmons, the Democrat-Gazette political editor, to state editor Marilyn Mitchell's hot resignation note -- "indescribably bad" in the case of a "boys will be boys" remark by Simmons.

Comments

Boo Hoo, Boo Hoo. I am sure the Clinton's barking dog Carville never went over the top.

Simmons' remarks were good-ol-boy crap personified. One big non-specific denial combined with jabs at the accuser...at the obviously anti-establishment man-hater, she-devil. It must have been a painful document to parse together.

Mathews has crossed so many lines it's unconscionable that he's allowed to continue spreading his crap. (And I'm not one to go for the messenger...Free Speech all the way.) If his statements were as racist as they are sexist, they wouldn't be tolerated. But it's just ole shrill Hillary and her band of ugly, old, fat, whatever, 'feminazis'...boys will be boys...hey, we're all equal now so get over it.

God how long have I been with the stupid's!

Yes. anyone who believes that the corporate owned media that's GOP partisan as hell together with our religiously/KKK inspired/driven southern brethren with all their ingrained racist/gender prejudices would ever allow a woman, much less a black man, become President to monitor and pick at their wealth and privileges must have a brain tumor.

Don't voters know that no sooner than the GOP destroy's Hiliary, there one and only REAL threat, the whole GOP swift boat crew will belly up for a big Obama Grit's party.

Whining about unfair press coverage is one of the hallmarks of a losing campaign, regardless of party.

I watch MSNBC frequently, CNN some and Faux News rarely. Rarely do I see Coultergeist on MSNBC yet she appears to be a regular on FNS, her homey station, so to speak. Along with constant Hillary hater, Toe-suck Morris, Traitor Ollie, Phony Geraldo, Mad Dawg Hannity and a host of other belfry bats. Seems Media Matters is walking over a FSN dollar to pick up an MSNBC dime. Now, how biased is MM and shouldn't their name really be Hillary Matters?

The Clintons set their own press tone. Throughout this campaign, Hillary's control of the media that travels with her has been tighter than an abusive parent over a wayward daughter. She wouldn't even deign to travel on the press plane until recently. And Bill Clinton is famous for getting red-faced and railing at the media. Remember his little South Carolina moment when he accused the media of reporting on things that actual voters didn't care about?

Maybe the Clintons would enjoy a less dysfunctional relationship with the media if they attempted to court them rather than viewing them as adversaries or worse, second-class citizens. In the meantime, this "Hillary is treated unfairly" thing is as ridiculous as anything coming from journalists who like to accuse Huck of "whining." This is just whining too. It's whining to tee up a meme to explain her inevitable defeat.

All the democrats want is a level playing field nothing more nothing less. If it ever came to past the GOP would be remembering 1929 and the 1930 Hoover days as the glorious days!

One has to take their hat off to the "s---!) game they play. Perhaps we should designate them the grand old "hockey" party.

Women for President:
Media Bias in Eight Campaigns
Erika Falk, Johns Hopkins University

Communication scholar Erica Falk will discuss her new book, "Women for President: Media Bias in Eight Campaigns," a timely analysis of gender bias in press coverage of presidential campaigns. Tracing the campaigns of eight women who ran for president through 2004 - Victoria Woodhull, Belva Lockwood, Margaret Chase Smith, Shirley Chisholm, Patricia Schroeder, Lenora Fulani, Elizabeth Dole, and Carol Moseley Braun - Falk finds little progress in the fair treatment of women candidates. Falk is the associate program chair for the Master's degree in Communication at Johns Hopkins University. Previously, she served as a research director for the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

You can conduct a very easy test at home. Get a piece of paper and a pen and put it next to your favorite food stained chair in front of the TV. Whatever channel you're watching, just make a mark under anti-Hillary or pro-Obama as the days goes on. At midnight count up the check marks and see what ya got.

There are a lot of the 1% who fear Hillary Clinton more than they do Osama. I think the reason for it is that we'll see a whole different ballgame if Hillary is elected. She and Bill will have accomplished everything a human can achieve this side of the planet Mars. President Hillary Clinton won't have to sweat the small stuff. She won't have to suck up to power any more, she can skip petty and because she'll have nothing further to prove, she can actually do what's best for the country and the world instead of trying to suck up a little more power.

For the first time since FDR, we might have a President ruling from their brain, not their ego or their bank account. Hillary Clinton might have the balls to fix everything that's wrong with this country over her 8 year term without constantly working to enrich the rich and powerful. I believe that's what the Republican owners of our MSN are scared of, that is why there doing everything in their power to crush Hillary. Imagine if a politician did what was good for us, instead of what was good for their rich supporters?

Keep track of that list for a day and it will prove ain't nothing good being said about the Clintons. The vast rightwing conspiracy is at work. Be smarter.

Deathbyinches:

Remember the last time Hillary used the phrase "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" he it came back to hit her in the face when it was proven that her boy Billy was actually lying after all. You comment about me being a right wing nut is the actually funny given the statement below: read on....

And it all happened in public and within her party. The dread Republicans she is used to hating, whom she seems to pay no psychic price for hating, and who hate her right back, are not doing this to her. Her party is doing this.

No right wing nuts involved in Hillary's downfall. It's the folks she and Billy have patronized all of these years.

I feel you pain. I know it's hard to see Hillary's ass hitting the pavement!

"The Clintons set their own press tone...--prouster

Oh please...quit blaming an individual woman for blatantly sexist media coverage. The media don't have to love Hillary to give her un-sexist coverage...to give her equal coverage. And, the last time I checked the media was s'pose to have a somewhat adversarial role with politicians. It's not up to the politicians to make it easy for the media; and it's not up to the media to anoint the nicest guy/gal. This buddy stuff is what leads to a White House Press Corp that's is more neutered by familiarity than hungry for investigative stories.

I knew Mathews was lost when he was beside himself over the White House Christmas Parties and Trump's wedding. You can't 'cover' people who are 'buds.'

"...No right wing nuts involved in Hillary's downfall..."--billary

LOL...so, there are right wingers with a sense of humor.

Of course, Zelda. It's everybody's fault but Hillary's that she loses, isn't it?

I'm not talking about winning or losing, about who's responsible for that winning/losing. I'm talking about the sexist bias in the mainstream media's coverage of her and the campaign. And, that's quite a leap, prouster, to take my words and render them as 'it's everybody's fault but Hillary's that she loses, isn't it?'. Isn't it?

Back in the beginning, when Hillary expected a coronation rather than a competition, she would only allow interviews from those who were friendly to her. She cut off access to anyone who asked tough questions or offered any criticism. Now she's paying the price.

She might have been a better candidate than Obama in the general election, but we'll never know. I expect Hillary to be a sore loser, and the Clinton machine will do more to harm Obama's chances in the fall than any Republican could ever do.

That Bill was caught lying doesn't take away the existence of a vast right-wing conspiracy.

No Billary, the rightwing conspiracy came back to hit all of us. It's hitting hard as I type. The Whisper Campaign no longer whispers...it yells. The question is....is the American public still as dumb as they were in 2000 and 2004? If so, the White House criminals will win again. If so, America deserves what it's getting. Let Cheney and McCain keep on until the whole world is at war and violent death becomes as common in Arkansas as it is in Iraq.

I guess if it comes to that and as long as Hillary is whipped, it's worth it to our rightwing friends on this blog. Just remember, your kids will suffer ever bit as much as mine will. You'll be right next to me dodging bullets while trying to steal scraps of rotting food from the dumpster. None of us are in the lucky 1% who will jet away from the smoking ruins of what once was America.

Keep viewing all this as a little game, some kind of sports deal where you root for your team even if they murder innocent people by the hundred of thousands. Keep loyal to your side even when your leader is a laughing stock to school children playing on the playground. Support kidnapping and torture. Laugh when you get the rare chance to see a dead Iraq or a limbless US soldier. You still got yer tax cuts and Barrett says that's all that matters in life. What a disgusting bunch of Americans you've turned out to be.

Barring a couple of assassinations, Obama or Clinton will be your next President. Pay close attention at what a good President can do in office. It's been 7 years, I think you've forgotten. I think you forgot Bill Clinton's approval numbers never got below 60%. Twat year was it that Bush was even close to such high numbers? 2001, wasn't it?

I happen to think Hillary Clinton isn't even down...much less out. She's your worse nightmare...she's a tough girl, she can take it and she'll be dishing it out too. So, don't order her funerals flowers just yet. If I was you, I'd brace yo-self......we have a long way to go. What makes me happy is knowing I don't have to get up tomorrow and pretend I'm happy that Honest John McCain is my man. His joke candidacy will go nowhere. He'll probably be campaigning in Depends by November, if he's not already wearing them. And to think Grandpa Munster is the best the Republican Party can come up with. Oh how I laugh and laugh at him!

Be smarter.. Hillary and Bill throw folks like Joycelynn Elders to the wolves for nothing. They buy anti women torturers like Marx Pryor and they fund DLC Harold Ford to divide folks with racist and religious hate banners.. to name just a tiny fraction of their spineless actions. They may mean well. ..and should be welcomed to ride on the bus...but never be considered fit to drive.

"I think you forgot Bill Clinton's approval numbers never got below 60%. "

How do you tell when DBI is making stuff up again? When his fingers are typing!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton#Public_approval

As usual, prouster, you're all jab, no substance.

I believe a lot of bad stuff about the Clintons, but I don't believe they're racists.

You're replying to Eureka Springs, Zelda, not to me. I never said they were. You might at least get your sour canned responses straight.

No, prouster, the first part of my response was for you...'cause you're the one who put words in my mouth on a previous post; and you're the one I asked a question of.

I think anyone who whines about the media being sexist is making excuses for Hillary's awful campaign, and Hillary in general. Here's this woman who's supposed to be the paragon of feminism, who stood by while her husband not only cheated on her (and with some pretty skanky woman, to boot) but actively helped her husband destroy the life and reputation of his mistresses. If you expect me to buy into her pre-mortem "the media did it!" meme, then I've got some Whitewater land to sell to you.

If Obama were down to Clinton right now we'd be hearing the same thing in reverse on different blogs, about racism etc. etc. etc. So to answer your question, yes, I do think you're blaming the media for Hillary's inevitable defeat. Not a single person is asking how Hillary's campaign blew through $125 million before New Hampshire, why it decided not to contest caucuses in key states that Obama won, why Bill Clinton went and pissed off the entire Democratic establishment and got all the Kennedys (at least, the ones that matter) behind his wife's chief opponent, or any of those other questions. When the campaign folds up shop and people start writing books about it, the Clinton apologists will persist in blaming the media for her loss, and not her many stumbles as a candidate.

To: Democrat Gazette Staffers Who Read this Blog

I read with interest the e mail from the irritated employee and the response from Bill Simmons. How many times has your newspaper taken comments in e mails less mean spirited than this and made them three day stories? How many people have you embarassed and humiliated for things said on e mail? Yet...the e mail comes from your place of employment and Simmons doesn't return calls. Hey Bill....once upon a time when you were a real reporter you would have hammered a state employee for not returning the call. And my goodness...how many days would Seth have sucked out of an e mail like the one from the departing editor ? It makes me sick the double standard you allow yourself. It makes me ill the way you cower like little sissies when the story involves you. The next time you are filing an FOI, and salivating about the cheap shots you will get out of it....think about this little episode and think about how you did not respond. In most of corporate American the Simmons response would have gotten him fired on the spot. But not...of course not....at your sad little throwback to some strange time in America. The word hypocrisy doesn't even begin to cover this little episode. This is why the mainstream media is dying. You used to be something that mattered and now you are just small minded people who don't have the stones to live by the same rules you expect from the people you cover.

"I think anyone who whines about the media being sexist is making excuses for Hillary's awful campaign, and Hillary in general. Here's this woman who's supposed to be the paragon of feminism, who stood by while her husband not only cheated on her (and with some pretty skanky woman, to boot) but actively helped her husband destroy the life and reputation of his mistresses. If you expect me to buy into her pre-mortem "the media did it!" meme, then I've got some Whitewater land to sell to you..."--prouster

Well that's kinda black/white of ya, prouster (no pun intended)...or maybe I'm just giving you too much credit. Either you don't think there is ANY sexism in the media or your hatred for all things Clinton is coloring your words/thoughts. I'm certainly not going to argue against the idea(s) that Hillary is flawed (or choose your own adjective/adverb) and/or that she's run a crappy campaign. I have my own stones to throw at the Clintons...and Obama, and McCain; but I've never witnessed a presidential candidate who wasn't a compilation of good/bad...and everything in between. What's less clear than some of the media's blatant sexism is where all those lines between a poor candidate/campaign and biased/sexist media coverage intersect. I'm not that smart.

Also...I don't understand where you get the idea, prouster, that a feminist is not allowed to forgive a cheating spouse and maintain his/her feminist credentials. All feminism is about is wanting a level playing field for EVERY woman...regardless of what life options she chooses. Whether it's aiming for the presidency or aiming to be the best stay at home mom/wife, feminism is about equal opportunity...about a level playing field. Period. Whether to forgive cheating or work outside the home is about personal choice, not feminism.

There is little that, rightly or wrongly, benefits the Clintons more than their RABID haters who insist the Clintons are guilty of every sin imaginable...who let other injustices (i.e. sexist media coverage), other people slide because their hatred for the Clintons is all consuming. Much of the media coverage of Hillary is sexist/biased and, both Obama/Clinton have baggage/flaws.

It's going to be a strange Sunday...'cause I agree with you, strangetimes.
