Homeless in LR
gell7 is our neighborhood's very own homeless video journalist. Ever wanted to get in the face of City Hall, such as City Manager Bruce Moore? gell7 has done it, along the course of compiling dozens of other video clips downtown. This links a page with all his many videos. Be sure to look for his quickie with Deputy City Manager Bryan Day. Writes David Koon:
Behold! The youtube adventures of Gell7, a Little Rock homeless dude who spends his days arguing with the cops, busting on yuppies, dumpster diving, discussing the intricacies of the universe with crackheads and engaging in a "Roger and Me" like quest for a sit-down with City Manager Bruce Moore. Bizarre, insightful, surreal, strangely beautiful, uniquely Little Rock -- this goes beyond Internet video and becomes something like folk art.

Comments
Bruce Moore is not very engaged on the issue. How old is the video? Sure seems like nice weather.

Yes indeed, the video of old Bruce sums up the indifference I experienced by the vast majority of the traditional citizens of Little Rock in my forty plus years of intermittent residence and observation. Southern hospitality only extends to what benefits the benefactor.. At least people used to look you in the eye and say "bless your heart, would you like something to eat?"
One giant God fearing cold shoulder without enough decency to look you in the eye and tell you you are eternally screwed and on your own if you are down and out in Little Rock.
Post of the day, Max!

I sat next to gell7 while at the Central Arkansas Library computer lab downtown. I remember him talking with the librarian about his skirmishes with city hall; he has his own website/myspåce.

I couldn't help but wonder why a guy that smart was homeless...

All this is very thought provoking. It appears no matter what city or state you're located in, most city workers of the higher level are pretty cold, uninterested and camera shy. You should see the little tape of my turning my video camera on the FS Yard Nazi who was busy video taping my house and yard. He ran like a scared rabbit when he saw I was doing to him what he was doing to me. Fair is fair...isn't it?
I don't know what makes a Nazarene or a homeless street person. Both are a mystery to me. Our friend Red, a long time homeless person in Fort Baptist is quite intelligent, with many interests and hours of stories about 20 plus years on the street. He spent a year or so in Cummins a few years back for attacking an ATM machine with a brick. They accused him of trying to rob the machine. I know Red well enough to know he did to the non-working machine what all the rest of us want to do when the damn things won't work and you need your money. But there was no one to defend Red so he got to be a guest of the state for a while. He probably needed a lot of that free dental care and medical checkups. He came back home seemingly un-bitter about the whole affair.
Who set in stone that everyone has to live in a little white house with a picket fence? Who decided that adults shouldn't FK in empty city parks after midnight? Where is that in the Bible? So what if gell7 wants to sleep in the alley after a long day of video blogging? It won't hurt your kids as much as attacking a country in the Middle East to steal the oil. I generally like following societal rules, but I don't know why everyone must toe the boring old line. Anyone who grew up in Fort Baptist before 1980 or so remembers the bizarre and harmless street people, real characters who used to populate Garrison Avenue. I don't know what happened to them, but for the most part their gone. I know for a while it was common practice to buy them a 1 way ticket to Florida. Maybe they're the ones screwing up Florida elections? Homeless hanging chads....anyone?
I fear a Stepford population. I don't want everyone to look alike and act alike. Not enough people are going around asking questions like gell7. More questions asked and we might have skipped 8 miserable years of Cheney-Bush. Think about it.

Rather than make Bruce Moore the scapegoat here, let's remember who really escalated the homeless population in the U.S.......McCain's mentor Ron "to hell with the homeless let em vote Democrat" Reagan.

Max,
Thanks for posting this info....excellent voice on the street.
I'm a big fan of his Vic Snyder 2025 video. The man has impersonators and everything.
