McCain's lovely lobbyist

I didn't see the NY Times story mentioned in D-G this morning. For fair or foul, the days when daily newspaper editors could harrumph stories they don't like out of existence are long gone. This morning, he denied all, which should require coverage even though the first-day story was MIA.

More here. As I indicated last night, "maverick" McCain has plenty of questions to answer about his dealings with lobbyists. I think the Times made a major error in focusing on the personal over the broad professional issues. Yglesias says same.

And what's Mike Huckabee got to say about all this? Still can't find any word. But he is talking about being on Saturday Night Live.

This blogger thinks the story will help McCain, not Huckabee. It gives a reason -- the mean, liberal NY Times -- for conservatives to unite in common cause.

Comments

Mike Huckabee SHOULD stay quiet about this.

When your enemy's ammo dump catches fire - stay out of the way - let it explode.

That was not a quote from Tsun Su's Art of War but it shoulda been. I think my grandpa told me this in one of his stories of the "Great War" which later became "World War 1" after the sequal came out.

I wonder if you have any McCain supporters monitoring the AT Blog, Max?

I guess we'll see...

You bring up a good point on the broader problem McCain has with lobbyist ties...with his positions on various Senate committees...

We'll see how the Mad Mav pulls out of this one...

since no one else has mentioned , that i've noticed (only skimmed all the previous threads)

the NYTimes sat on this story for 3 months before publishing it.

just like the bastards did with the W Administration's illegal warrantless wiretapping story, holding it for over a year, including waiting until after the election of 2004, to publish it.

kinda makes one wonder "whatinthehell are they "holding" NOW" ?

When you do read the NYTimes story, set aside plenty of time. It runs in excess of 3000 words -- enough to make my eyes cross this morning.
What struck me before I said enough: McCain avoids flying directly from Washinton to Phoenix because he was instrumental in getting that route set up 10 years ago. Doesn't want anyone to think he was looking out for his personal interests. The big "however" is this: apparently he doesn't think that accepting rides on various corportate jets might be misconstrued.
Yeah, I guess you could use the word misconstued in that context. Now me? When folks extend me a big favor, I tend to feel obligated. Of course no one has offered me a ride in their corporate jet so maybe on that higher plain (plane?), there is no implied or assumed obligation.
Ya think?

NNNNOOOOOooooo! Not SNL again.

If it wasn't enough having one candidate debasing the stature of the presidential office by appearing on a tawdry, off color, "comedy" show yucking it up with a saxophone, lets finish it off with a cheshire-cat grinning bass guitar performance . . .

Gee - I wonder if Abraham Lincoln did a stand-up routine at the local pub, picking his banjo between the raunchy jokes.

These days, anything for a vote.

"He is essentially an honorable person," said William P. Cheshire, a friend of Mr. McCain who as editorial page editor of The Arizona Republic defended him during the Keating Five scandal. "But he can be imprudent."

Sounds like Tony Soprano to me. Plus The Soprano's showed America there ain't nothing sweeter than free sex while your making dirty deals. But, for me, the the sex isn't my focus, it's the dirty deals. John McCain was a fake the first time you heard his name and he's a fake now. He should have been canned or jailed after the Keating Five story came to light. America would have been better off if his career had been stopped there.

Not that I even want to compare the two, but watching McCain all these years makes me worry about Barack Obama and it's back to words. All we have with Obama are words. Words are free, I can string together a line of words to prove anything if the only proof you need are words. McCain has been putting out words in one direction all these years while voting the other direction most of the time. He's made a career out of the trick "are you going to believe me or your lying eyes?"

Why a rich kid has spent his post military career sucking up money like a starving Ethiopian is beyond me. McCain drove a brand new Corvette to high school. He hasn't been poor a day in his life. Yet his career has been about money and power from day 1.

I hope the NY Times and others nail him good over this lobbyist crap, not for the sex, but for the favors he traded for sex with a younger woman. Further showing our government ceased to be by the people, for the people decades ago. We've been victims of a hoax long enough. Our government is dying and it's from the hands of old white war veterans like McCain and sell-outs like Mark Pryor. Mad Cow isn't going to kill us, Mad Congress is.

Yeah, I think this disclosure will help McCain--especially in places like Arkansas.

We're a state where a woman who tries to blow the whistle about what the old boys really do say behind closed doors can expect to be dragged through the mud, even before anyone has analyzed the merits of her case. We tolerate ugly remarks about her appearance, her motives, her sanity, even before we know who she is or whether she has a case or not.

And we're a state where people can repeatedly characterize those who are choosing Obama over Hilary as going gay for Barack. Yeah, we're the kind of place where news of a heterosexual affair will probably help McCain.

"Gee - I wonder if Abraham Lincoln did a stand-up routine at the local pub, picking his banjo between the raunchy jokes. " - Don Key....

If I remember all I've read about Ol' Abe, he was particularly fond of telling jokes and humorous stories. One of our bloggers is even named after his favorite: Petroleum Vesuvius Nasby. Abe certainly set the elite tongues wagging in DC with his penchant for crude, if not ribald, anecdotes and fantasies.

Just a hint you're bent
(Or talk incoherent)
You're suddenly low-rent
Your wad is gone and spent

Who cares what you meant
Or what was your intent
Tis time to beg and repent
Or you won't be - President!

Jake - you have ruined my illusion . . .er, delusion?

I really doubt McCain dallied with this woman. These stories have a way of showing up in the most timely of manners. Besides, it doesn't fit the GOP modus operandi: Vicki Iseman isn't a dude.

Although the McDenial implied guilt in re the sex angle to me more than the NYT article itself.. I don't personally care about it..except for the hypocrisy.. These GOPers and far to many Dems are ready to control peoples sex lives and jail or impeach anyone for having sex outside of a missionary married format .. From Larry Craig, David Vitter and now more than likely McCain.. It's the holier than thou hypocrisy which warrants any and all troubles they receive from stories exposing their hypocrisy.

But McCains involvement with Telecom lobby as well as meeting in the Miami home of lobbyists and cruise liner executives who were all tied up with Jack Abramoff should be the biggest story today... But implied sex trumps all and I don't blame the piss poor NYT article for that.. I blame the mindset of the general public.

OLE DBI (SCUSE ME, DUI) HAS REARED ITS UGLY HEAD AGAIN. YOU LITTLE SILVER-TONGUED DIABLO.
THANK GOD AND GRAYHOUND YOU ARE IN FORT SMITH, JUST WHERE YOU BELONG. STILL IN THAT TIME WARP. GOOD FOR YOU. BETTER FOR US (AS IN THE REST OF ARKANSAS)SOMEONE TOLD ME JUST LAST WEEK, YOU WOULDNT EVER NEED A BLOOD TRANSFUSION, JUST AN EXTRA GALLON OR SO OF LIQUID PLUMBER. THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE MOST CAUSTIC OF THE ACID IN WESTERN ARKANSAS.
MUST BE THAT BOTTLED ILLINOIS RIVER CHICKEN WATER YOU DRINK. WHEW... YOU REEK. HAVE ADDED YOUR POOR WIFE AND KIDS TO THE EVER GROWING PRAYER LIST.

DK,

I think you ought to keep that illusion of yours. Mr. Lincoln would've been a modern-day Will Rogers if he was around now. So, your imagery of him doing stand-up is not faroff or far-out.

Four score and seven beers ago....and all that kinda stuff.

This one's for you, Cato...

Old LargeAss, (Janet, is that you?) Sure doesn't know much about liberals.. I don't mean to speak for DBI but if someone were to say that to me I would find it to be a humorous compliment from a wing-nut. Aside from the poorly thrown attacks..you never made a point there, Lardo. If someone strikes a nerve you ought to be able to tell them where it hurts.

Yeah, Eureka I'm with you. I think big Butt is a girl who's so friggin ulgy they can't get any so the bitterness grows and grows. But hey Wide Load, do us a favor and quit lowering the average IQ on here when you post. We like DBI and his untamed posts. As for you why don't you go back and do what yo momma always wanted you to do, finish the 10th grade.

Rosso, is that the lobbyist in question behind Mc? Like I said earlier, at least it's one of the opposite sex. The GOP should be all smiles over this one.

Apparently John McCain has a great line he uses with the Republican ladies:

"My friends, there maybe some snow on the hanger deck, but my A-4 can still turn and burn!"

All in all, there'll be lots of jokes but the sex is hiding the real story about possible political favoritism. There definitely was some McCain support for bills needed by Iseman's clients.

Although it has been reported that McCain's handlers back then wanted him to stay away from her, it was not clear whether the reason was because of this favoritism or because of something more intimate. More likely, it was the former.

McCain will have his wings clipped a bit but since Huckabee basically is a Dodo politically, he ain't gonna be doing any soaring while McCain gets through this turbulence. Unless Iseman admits to something regarding this and because the bills referred to in the NYT article are very lightweight concerns with the public, McCain should be back on track shortly (Turn & Burn, Baby!!).

made it all day without re-transmitting the snarks.. can stand it no longer... please forgive me :)

headline from Tokyo: McCain Campaign To Focus on "Erectability"

and now when McCain is accused of being in bed with a lobbyist
they really mean
IN BED, WITH A LOBBYIST

tadum tish... thankyouthankyou, here every thursday, try the veal

Muleboy, you stinker!!!

That one about Tokyo was a present supplies!

Latest question from a reporter:

"What's Your Position on Lobbyists, Senator McCain?"

gooden jake, and tyvm

reminds of a time, long long ago, when Ted Kennedy was featured on the cover of a tabloid magazine. Ted was rather large and rather naked, "cavorting" on a yacht with his eventual next wife.

someone showed a copy of it to Dale Bumpers on the floor of the Senate, to which Dale replied :

"well i see the Senator from Massachusetts has changed his position on offshore drilling"

:)

Yep, Cato...agreed...
