Oy vay OA!
That embezzling bookkeeper at the Oxford American, mentioned here previously? It was worse than originally thought.
“We’ve now found out she may have taken as much as $70,000,” said founder and editor Marc Smirnoff. “She’s left us with just $3,000 in the bank.”
He doesn’t believe restitution is an option. “I just don’t expect Renae has any of the money left: she bought cars, got a tattoo, spent it on a ‘sweet sixteen’ party for her daughter at the best hotel in town. Who knows, she might have even used the money she stole from us to pay for bail,” he said.

But has the OA EVER managed its money? I'm not disputing that the woman embezzled money, but I am suggesting that they may use her pilfering as an excuse that covers additional, general mismanagement.
And what's the "best hotel" in Conway?

Technology has come a long way. You could repossess the tattoo.
Using the ill gotten gains to pay for her bail. Priceless. She gets style points for that.

I could be mistaken, but I would have thought when OA went into the partnership with UCA that the accounting function and money management would have been one of the things UCA did as part of their roster of duties leaving the literary editing functions to the OA people. That would make this money problem stealing from the state would it not and may have turned up in a state audit.
I know a non-profit status was set up but I think it's still a state agency type thing for auditing purposes.

Next time - Probably ought to hire a CPA earlier in the process - before you have any known losses - just to make sure you aren't exposed. Spend a nickel, save a dollar.
Feed the pig. Hire a CPA. Why would CPAs pick that for their slogan . . .? I guess they could have picked worse . . .

Maybe they can write a song, get it on their CD (or someone else's in exchange for placement on their CD) and recoup their losses.

Jazzy--
Let's get real for a moment. There ARE no hotels in Conway. Only motels. Conway is not a tourist mecca, darling.
Plus, I have no idea why you would link me with the fictitious monstrous character, Norman Bates.
I am a former Girl Scout. The fact that my brother was a homidical transexual taxidermist is, frankly, none of your business and I resent the implication.
Norman was a wonderful person. Sure, he had issues, but who doesn't?

Back in my day, we had sex at the Motel 6, but they went and chopped down all the trees, so it was easy for parents dropping by the Wal-Marts to see your vehicle there. Bad news, bears. Of course, back then you could also go "parking" in the country, but I think that's all been taken over by subdivisions.
Now-a-days, they're probably having sex in every other place they can find.
I hope this lady who stole all the money has to pay back every penny.

*And what's the "best hotel" in Conway?*
I suspect the reference to the best hotel in town meant Little Rock.
The OA offices are on the 7th floor of the Prospect Building in Little Rock, at University and Cantrell. That is where the crime occurred.

As a recent-but-former UCA student, I can answer jazzy's question:
The Library. To be more exact, the small study rooms on the back of the upper floors of the library.
