The missing Huckabee tapes
Great story in Slate. It's about a reporter's dogged effort -- unsuccessful -- to see the dozens of tapes Friar Huck made as pastor of churches in Pine Bluff and Texarkana. As I've written before, they have been disappeared as effectively as an Argentinean dissident.
Never mind that Huckabee sells himself as the honest, affable, straight talker with nothing to hide. Never mind that his shows and sermons had such innocent titles as "Positive Alternatives" and "A Better Walk." Never mind that during his 15-year public career, Huckabee has already handed his enemies more outrageous statements than could fit in your average fundraising letter. Still, the prospect of America seeing young Pastor Huckabee unplugged makes the campaign very nervous. Which only leaves a reporter ever more hungry to know why. What incredible things did Huckabee preach back in the day?
Interesting stuff here. Huckabee clearly sent the word not to share his work with reporters. What, exactly, is he trying to hide? The writer offers some theories -- comments on gender, race, evolution, unvarnished evangelizing -- on why he's reluctant to expose the Full Huck to the world.
Anybody got any tapes?
REMEMBER THE ALAMO: Wash. Post columnist Dana Milbank goes long on The Huckster's last-stand news conference in San Antonio.
NO PEEP FOR VEEP: Huckabee missing in this speculative column on vice presidential candidates.

Comments
as the selection of a VP nominee is the first truly Presidential process/decision a candidate makes in public, McCain's will be even more important and scrutinized more thoroughly, due to the natural questions regarding his health and his age.
not just the mortality factor/question, but also how/whether Mac chooses to begin the process, or not, of trying to chart a path for the GOP's future, via his selection.
if Mac perceives his strongest card/issue is WAR, WAR, WAR, (which i believe he does, due to the money behind it and the echo/bubble it has created in which Mac seems happily imprisoned.. ouch, did i say that?) then he will select a younger version of himself, just in case, that will send the NeoCons, Likudniks, the MIC, AT&T, and FOX News into multiple orgasms.
So, bible-bumpers be damned, Mac will ask Rudy Giuliani to the dance.
Which means NY'ers may well be second-fiddle on both teams.

Hiding tapes shouldn't come as surprising behavior from a man who crushed a truck load of computer hard drives owned by the State of Arkansas. And look it, we let him get away with it...scott free.
Back in 1983 the wife and I took a vacation to Bermuda that we really couldn't afford. It's a tiny island with thousands of tiny midget cars and trucks and a zillion mopeds and motorcycles, all driving on the wrong side of the road going thru dozens of undecipherable death traps called traffic circles. It only took us about 5 minutes to figure out if we intended to return home alive we'd better walk or take a taxi, cause tourists behind the wheel had a very slim chance of living to the last day of the vacation.
Huckabee's desire that we only remember what he said or did today reminds me of Bermuda because at midnight every night the government there reset the figures so that each new day started out with a clean record of zero traffic accidents, injuries and deaths. Call Bermuda and ask how's the driving down there and they'll tell you, we've had no deaths or injuries this year! Come on down!
That we ever elected Huckabee to the Lt. Gov. chair is an embarrassment we'll all have to bear for the rest of time...and don't get me started on Mark Pryor!
