The rest of the Arkansas Tech story

As I suggested last night, Arkansas Tech's announcement that the play "Assassins" would be staged on campus after all was a product of negotiations and the ACLU played a role.

Here's the ACLU news release. It welcomes the outcome, but also notes 1) the university's story on cancellation of scheduled play performances changed several times 2) one of the authors of the play had expressed unhappiness with the decision, and 3) the university also had banned student news reporting on the controversy, a clear First Amendment violation. That ban has been lifted.

UPDATE: A letter from a student suggests all the free speech issues at Ark. Tech haven't been solved yet. Check it on the jump.

UPDATE: A final news release on the production, which will open March 13. Advance ticket sales only. None at the door. Does that strike you as weird?

LETTER TO THE TIMES

My name is Jessica Lloyd, and I am a student at Arkansas Tech University. I am writing you on behalf of a group of students who are planning a protest concerning our limited free speech on the ATU campus. Among our concerns are the censorship of student-run media outlets, the fact that our free speech is limited to a small "free speech area" and a general fear of speaking out that exists among many students and faculty.

The protest is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4th, 2008 from 9 am to 4 pm in the "free speech area" located in the courtyard of the Doc Bryan student center. The number of students involved is expected to fluctuate during the day, as many students have classes or jobs they can not miss, but there will be a core group present the entire time.

More information is available at http://atu.facebook.com/event.php?eid=11591490879, our Facebook event
page.

I hope you will be able to help us publicize this event and draw attention the ATU administration's violations of our first amendment rights to free speech.

Thank you for your time.

Jessica Lloyd

The link to the ACLU news release has a problem. A couple of characters need to be trimmed from the end of the URL.

And a parent would want their kid to go to Arkansas Tech why? Truly. If this is the level of the administration's ability to think critically, and creatively address issues, then what must it be like in the classroom? Hopefully the Peter Principle is at play and idiocy is only at the top. Still the leader sets the tone. And this Bozo needs to step away from higher education. He should go write a book where he'd be harmless.

Really flabbergasts me. This was a silly, silly spot for an administration to pick a fight. And hearing the student newspaper is not allowed to report on the story. That just adds fuel to the fire. Now he needs his ass kicked for being so stupid.

So parents, you have to ask yourself, do you you want your kid in that kind of environment. Is that going to serve them well?
And you are paying what for it? OH MY GOD! Is that what college should be about???

Is that where you want your adult in waiting to be spending some vital, critical, and formative years of intellectual development. I think not.

Bang Bang. Take that you wascally Chancellor.

Parents of Arkansas Tech students. I eat my above words. That letter from Jessica LLoyd, which was not posted at the time I made my post, tells me loud and clear that these smart, bright, spirited students will not let the idiocy and shortcomings of the administration hold them back on campus or in life. I humbly ask their indulgence on my hasty post about the state of education at Arkansas Tech. It is alive well.

Bang Bang I just said to myself as I just pointed my fingers in the shape of a gun to my head.

You go Jessica!!

Why can't we agree or come to a senses of opinion on any one thing. I look at Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot often so surrealistic!

I find the censorship of the students and faculty of Arkansas Tech appalling. it was my understanding that a university was for the free exchange of ideas. I am a parent of a student @ ATU and will be supporting their right to protest and their right to free speech and challenge others to support these students. The canceling of the play was a form of censorship. Demanding the student media not comment is censorship. Firing and threatening to fire faculty for commenting is censorship.

a senses of opinion = census of opinion

I tried to look at Jessica Lloyd's link, but it required a Facebook account registration to view the page.

Then I tried to look at the online edition of their student newspaper, but it hasn't been updated since September 2007.

While they're working on freedom of speech, perhaps they should consider some more effective communication methods too.

ArkansasBlogger,

If you're too lazy to register for Facebook, that's your problem. It's an amazingly effective organizing tool.

Arkansawyer - After sixteen years on the Internet, and many years before that with other online services, the last thing I need is a Facebook account.

It's not a question of laziness. Facebook is notorious for invading the privacy of it's members, trying to sell information about their personal habits, and unfortunately, according to many news accounts, it has been an amazingly effective organizing tool for pedophiles.

Arkansas Blogger,

I take your point, and calling you lazy was unnecessary on my part.

That said, what you say about Facebook is pretty much true of the internet overall. If you don't want your personal information traded by Facebook, then get a throwaway e-mail account and use it only for Facebook. I find it worth it.

BWC: Thank you. from the depths of my soul. Steve Gaskin( Monday Night Class, etc.) once said "Acid (LSD) is the bullshit knife". Wrong, Steve, I have just seen the bullshit knife.

Is it a coincidence that on the same day that the show is reschelduled Marty Sabolo, Director of housing for ATU, writes an Editorial placing the blame on the Theatre Dept. This administration lackey knows how to lick boots.
He should have just been glad that no one is asking about the former Physical Plant Director ,Herman Luebker, being given just a few hours to clean out his desk after writng a letter about student safety.
In that letter Mr. Luebker pointed out the Marty had housed Asian students in a construction zone during the Wilson Hall renovation. Also, pointed out was that another building, Critz, was about to be used for student housing and contaminated. http://www.nwanews.com/adg/News/158211/ Critz Hall remains half occupied by the Physical Plant.
But, if you look close at the Board of Trustees notice released on Feb 28, you will notice that the new Physical Plant is soon to be built. Will this will open Critz up for student housing? I think most college students would like to control which chemicals they experiment with.

And speaking of student safety, it is hard to call 911 after ATU cancelled Residence Hall phone service. Oh, you can use your cell phone if you have one.

It is funny that Marty Sabolo would write this after (as some facebook posts allege) forcing his Resident Advisors to leave certain Facebook groups. Practicing free speech while denying it to his student employees. see *Dr. Brown does not care about you* Facebook group
Marty is very familiar with Facebook as a means of marketing and sutdent body control. He co-presented a program about it.

It seems the administration is going after the good name of the theatre faculty still.

Just another example in the long saga of Dr. Brown's ironfisted rule at ATU.

While ATU has benefited in recent years for the on-going improvements in property conditions under the watchful eyes of Dr. Brown, at the same time, there have been instances of ATU not being viewed as a good neighbor in ATU's relationship with local entities.

As I look to the East at UCA and see the energy and cooperative spirit exhibited between UCA and Conway, I look back at ATU and Russellville and yearn for what Conway is enjoying. My hope is that spirit of cooperation in Conway is infectious and will be caught in Russellville.

I work for The ArkaTech at ATU. A friend of mine wrote the article that appeared on the front page of the paper. She never faced any opposition from the university and was never told she couldn't write the article. TechTV6, however, was told they could not report on the issue. Why is the news paper a news source and the tech tv news just a place for feature stories? That is a problem. TV6 should be allowed to cover hard news stories.

As for Marty... Marty is just as bad as Dr. Brown on most issues. They are in the same boat and just circle around and around ATU.
