Mt. Magazine in snow

Things were so dead downtown, I went home at lunch. I barely made it down my north-facing hill, when brakes locked up on snow that compressed to ice as I drove down. I said, what the heck, and called it a day. I took a nap and woke up to find sun and clear streets, though plenty of snow on the ground. Then the snow returned and the street has slushed up again. It will be longer for snow to melt on Mount Magazine, illustrated in this photo from Kelly Boyd, who says:
Here is a photo from Mt. Magazine this morning. It was taken in the big curve at Goat Bluff about 4 miles from the town of Havana on Hwy. 309. The site is approximately 1,100 feet in elevation. This is typically where the snow line arrives in this area. Obviously, we had more than a little snow here. There were several trees down across the road up the mountain, many completely blocking the road. You can see one in the photo, which is taken looking south from the first waterfall. In clear weather that photo would have a good view of the valley. About 600 feet higher up the mountain (about 1.5 miles by highway) the snow changed over to a dry powder and there was very little clinging in the trees. However, up to that point I was surprised any pines were standing at all. Cedars took a particularly hard hit in this area, as they also did in the snow earlier in the week. It has been finished snowing here since before daylight and is melting well at lower altitudes. On the mountain, it will be a longer melt

Havana and Mt Magazine area is some of the most picturesque terrain in Ark. Strongly recommend a visit. Most of the people are very welcoming.

Hubby and I used to drive up on Mt. Magazine every Christmas Eve, don't know why, just
seemed the thing to do......look around, ohhhhhh and awwwww, and drive back home.
Now we spend evenings with him telling me about VERBS,,,,,the french are batshit crazy
over verbs. I tell him I'm out of high school, ain't lookin for any grade, so, enough of the
verbs, I hated english anyway, if it looks right I write it, if it sounds right I say it, forget
the rest..........waaaaay off subject.
I'm a nasty old woman tonight.........expected ****************feet of snow to greet me this
morn.......bah humbug.

I have to agree with eLwood on the picturesque qualities of Mt Magazine and that area. A nice leisurely drive out AR-10, through makes for a good Saturday experience. The restaurant at the lodge was pretty good when we went there a few weeks ago, and there are plenty of things to look at (and if you're a half-ass amateur photog like me, take pictures of).
