100 years in Iraq
Josh Marshall examines a question that will be critical in the fall campaign. Will The Associated Press and the rest of the media continue to swallow whole the McCain campaign's premise that quoting the candidate's own words (as above) amounts to unfair politics?
The link gives you ALL the context on McCain's repeated statements about commiting U.S. troops to Iraq forever.
McCain's only defense -- and it's purely theoretical, particularly in the bloodiest month in Iraq for U.S. troops since September -- is that some day Iraq will be like Germany as a troop assignment. You think?

Comments
Does anyone really think voters are going to beleive that McCain wants or intends to keep the war going for 100 years? We will have troops there for many years to come regardless who wins in November.
We are going to screw around and lose this damn election if we Democrats can't learn to focus on the big picture. With regards to Iraq, we need to focus on how much the war has already cost us and how it's been a failure.

I would argue Max the premise that John McCain wishes to fight for 100 years is a construction that is theoretical as well.

There's no doubt McCain has war and killing on the brain and will not rest until ever American is a POW --- Oooops we are already!
Thinking of Germany and Korea we know America just doesn't have a clue on how to pull out even when we are repeatedly told to leave. Probably why our government despises France -- they not only told us to leave they kicked us out.
Like Bush senior told idiot son bush about Iraq -- don't worry son I didn't pull out in time either.

Way to re-word the McCain stuff to fit your argument, Red. Of course there's no way to 'prove' that McBush 'wishes to fight for 100 years.' But there are many ways to factually argue that McCain's own words/actions/background tell us that a hundred years in Iraq wouldn't phase him one iota...that, like his war-mentor, dubya, he'll commit our country's blood/treasure for as long as he sees fit, and treat the public's desire to end this fiasco as little more than a buzzing insect. In arrogance, dubya/Mcbush are two peas in a pod.
Of all the varying degrees of coverage I've watched the various presidential candidates get through the years (Dem/Repub alike), the current media lovefest with McBush is the worst I've ever seen. I only thought 'they' were tender with Obama; I know they're head-over-heals for McBush. When I watch McBush and his gang of news followers, I think, well, I think someone needs to hose those reporters down. Get them back to reporting what McBush actually says/does rather than deciding he's really a better guy than his actions often indicate so they'll clean things up a bit.

Isn't that what the DNC is doing, which Max dutifully linked to?

I thought Max's link was to Josh Marshall's piece, not the DNC. But regardless...reporting that McBush will keep us in Iraq for a 100 years if he sees fit/if he thinks it's necessary is not re-wording and/or altering anything. A factual argument using his own words/actions can easily be made to sustain such statements. On the other hand, you inserted the word 'wish' which altered the basic premise of the discusion. Even President Shit for Brains would argue that he doesn't 'wish' we were at war in Iraq.

[McCain Resurrected]
-- MATT TAIBBI
"But McCain's entire career has been dedicated to the idea that America must always have the right to solve its problems by force. Throughout his political career, he has argued for increased use of force in virtually every military engagement the U.S. has been involved in since Vietnam. He complained about Bill Clinton's "excessively restricted air campaign" in Kosovo, campaigning strenuously for a ground invasion. During the 1994 flap over Pyongyang's nuclear program, he called for "more forceful, coercive action." Even before the latest Iraq War, McCain argued way back in 1999 that the only way to deal with Saddam Hussein was "to strike disproportionate to the provocation."
The most frightening example of McCain's fondness for force is on display in his own book, Faith of My Fathers, when he complains about the politicians who refused to allow pilots like him to attack, say, Soviet ships unloading arms in Vietnamese port cities. "We thought our civilian commanders were complete idiots," he writes.
Bombing Soviet ships, of course, would probably have started World War III, but McCain's vision, then and now, encompasses war as a way of life. There is significant evidence that McCain believes war is something righteous and necessary, a tonic for the national soul, intrinsically "noble" irrespective of context (he is still one of the only politicians to apply that word to the Iraq conflict). That is why it's no joke when McCain says casually, "There's gonna be other wars," or when he sings, "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran." We have to assume that he will jump at the chance to expand this conflict and hit those politically sensitive targets his "complete idiot" civilian commanders once barred him from going after in Vietnam."
The higher the monkey climbs, the more you see his ass.

America is a belligerent bully committing countless atrocities around the world at the expense of our national defense and economic security. We are greedy genocidal maniacs and I am shocked at how long the rest of the world has allowed us to do so... but they will turn on us and it may be the end of the dollar as a world currency that proves to be the poison pill in addition to 200 plus dollar oil..
We admit having over 700 bases throughout the world.. it's not just Korea, Germany or Japan which are no longer necessary exept for thew hospitals in Germany while we continue Iraqi and Afghani genocide.
John McCain and George Bush Jr. are both bad pilots... Bush quit while doing drugs over Alabama and Houston... McCain crashed 5 or 6 planes, one time landing him in a tortured situation.. and they both have to commit massive atrocities to out perform their fathers... That's their entertainment, their power thrill.
John McCain sings "Bomb bomb Iran" and repeats "maybe a 100 years" to his audience every damn day in one version or another.. There is no editing involved, nothing out of context in the DNC ad. Someone like McCain does not run to and beg for the endorsement of Pro neo Israeli Jewish contingent, Lieberman AIPAC, and Armegeddon Christians like Hagee unless he loves needless war too. Folks like Pryor, Clinton, "Obliterate Iran" and McCain can't shake their love of Joe Lieberman without having the stench of death wrapped around them permanently. They are always looking for a reason to vote for war not a reason not to go to war. Follow the money.

"bejeeus, The Rolling Stone article is a keeper!"--Eureka
Yup...it sure is, Eureka! It reminds me of someone on this blog (BWC, I think, but please forgive if I've got it wrong) who has given us lots of McBush information and said even us libs would be shocked when the full truth about McBush came to light. I haven't dwelled on it too much...simple 'cause I wouldn't vote for him under any circumstances!!! But that statement and bejeeus' article give me chills.

Perhaps I'm way off target but I've quit paying attention the prez race. I see no way in hell barring the revelation of some real dirty, original stuff that any Third Termer like McBush is gonna win anything.
One thing about Monkey Boy, he sure fucked the Republicans for years to come. I sorta hope Hillary gets it so her Scorpio revenge trip can run rampant and clever for a year or two. She's not all nice and charming like Bill.
.
bejesus, hope you don't mind me copying and saving your quip: >>The higher the monkey climbs, the more you see his ass.<<
