Conflict emerges on school search

LR School Board member Baker Kurrus has sent a memo to fellow board members informing them that he's learned a real estate agent working for the district had identified property in which he has an interest as a potential middle school site. He's not in favor of the sale of the land for a school, he says, but otherwise said he will not participate in any consideration of the issue should it go forward.

Mr. Kurrus is a stand-up, above-board guy and his bringing this to light in this fashion is exactly what I would expect of him. Although I haven't agreed with his every action or opinion as a member of the school board, I feel he is an asset to the Board and the community.

Yet Kurrus gets portrayed as one of the bad guys in School Board matters.

Well Earl, I don't recall either news sources (Dem-Gaz or AT) printing anything against Kurrus. In fact, I can't recall any bloggers casting aspersions about his judgement or character.

Kurrus is probably the least criticized of the seven board members. I imagine Curry is second.

Kurrus offers a reasonable explanation of his actions in the memo. I found it more revealing than the few sentences Max devoted to it. I'm not sure conflict is the right choice in the heading since Kurrus has already ruled himself out of the decision. Anyway, read Kurus' memo and it will make more sense.

So, Earl, let's just say he "done a good thang." Kurrus deserves a pat on the back. He serves the board and his zone quite well. He is deserving of his good reputation and proves it again.

Jake, I must tell you that this is classic Baker.

I've coached baseball against Baker for the last 12 years and he's always right on. And his wife is a mirror of him. After coaching against someone for that many years you can usually pick out a couple of warts on someone. Not Baker, he's always about the kids first and that's what I respect most. No agenda.

Big asset to LRSD.
