Huckabee's pep rally

We told you earlier that some of John McCain's troops weren't happy to learn that Mike Huckabee had a Promote Mike Huckabee rally at the Capital Hotel less than a week in advance of McCain's visit to Arkansas tomorrow. This is the meeting first reported by columnist David Sanders.

Why unhappy? Because many of the remarks at the meeting were built on a generally held assumption among many present that McCain would be beaten this fall (or at best, be only a one-term president), leaving the way open for a Huckabee run for president in 2012. Huckabee himself did not speak these precise words at the session, I'm told, though supporters did.

Nobody's surprised that The Huckster would put his own interests first. But the timing and appearances were terrible. There was a big crowd. Word was sure to get out. And Huckabee is co-host of the McCain fund-raiser tomorrow, not to mention that Huckabee's main money man, Little Rock banker French Hill, is co-chair of Arkansas financial efforts for McCain. Whose side is he on?

Who was there? I've been told that the crowd included French Hill, Arkansas County farmer and Huckabee Game and Fish commissioner George Dunklin, former U.S. Sen. Tim Hutchinson, Huckabee campaign manager Chip Saltsman, Huckabee kids (Sarah, David, John Mark and daughter-in-law Lauren all were on the campaign payroll, remember, as well as bro-in-law Jim Harris), former Huckabee aide Chad Gallagher, Texas poultry magnate Bo Pilgrim and someone described as a wealthy businessman from Indiana. A good guess for the last might be Procter and Gamble exec Nathan Estruth, a Hucakbee supporter who put together a 527 that savaged McCain and other Huckabee opponents in Iowa with robo-calling emphasizing negatives of Huckabee opponents. He's a pal of Saltsman, my source says.

You can understand why this might have caused heartburn with McCain people.

The program at the rally, in addition to a thank-you speech and talk of the future by Huckabee: Testimonials to Huckabee and the campaign's brilliance. What a stroke it was, for example, to play a negative ad against Romney in Iowa while announcing Bro. Huck was too high-minded to run such dirty pool.

News: In addition to his new PAC, Huckabee plans to create a 501-c4 nonprofit organization, something of a think tank that, in addition to giving him access to more cash, might be used to burnish his foreign policy credentials.

Future Huckabee pep rallies around the country are scheduled. You can't get moving too early when the presidency will be open in 2012, right Sen. McCain?

ANOTHER LOCAL ANGLE: The meeting illustrates a rift in the Hutchinson clan between and Tim and his brother Asa, who came out tepidly early for Huckabee and then switched to McCain in the final days. Tim Hutchinson has become very close to Huckabee. Tensions linger on future influence over the Arkansas Republican Party  -- will Hutchinson or Huckabee be on top. Asa won't be coming to tea at the Huckabode any time soon, it's safe to say. (But, oh yes, Asa and Mike are co-hosts of the McCain event in LR. Going to be fun at the head table.)

Comments

I wish we could have a little more in-depth on the DPA. It would be of interest to know who pulls the trigger on Democrats jumping ship to hustle off to support Gil Baker and Rwingnuts over in Carrol County. IT would be of interest to see how the gas companies got Beebe to back down from meaningful
taxation.
It would be of more interest to learn just how Demos are cajoled into keeping Ark wages and worker rights in the same status as some 3rd World nations while "believing in" a living wage.

Maybe Tim Hutchinson finds solace in Rev Huckabee because Huck can forgive Timmy for porking his secretary in the bedroom next to Asa's while Asa was prosecuting President Clinton for an Oval Office
blow job.

I believe Asa was prosecuting Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice, not a blow job.

Show me where "blow job" appears in the impeachment resolution.

Take away the blow job and there would have been no prosecution. Simple. You can't hide behind
the legal formalities. Take away porking his secretary and Tim H would still be U.S. Senator today.

Oh, get real. Anyone with half a brain knows Bill was tarred and feathered for doing the
nasty with a 21 yr old hotty, at the same time all the repugs taking aim at him were doing
the same, or worse, over and over and over.....repugs just can't seem to stop themselves
from themselves.
Human nature to hate in others what we feel in our own deep, dark, hidden heart, seems to
justify what we can get away with.

Get real, Arkansas Red, the whole thing was about blow jobs and you know it. Aren't you mad about the 50+ million dollars wasted? I am.
I know you are a 28 percenter, but come on.........Bill Clinton was a good Governor and a better President. He had a weakness for women. Stupid, yes. Impeachable, no.

Hmm... lying about a blow job or lying about the need to invade Iraq? It is for God, not us, to determine the hierarchy of sin, but I'm guessing the person with blood on their hands might be a little worse.

Not a question of sin, but a question of jurisprudence. You perjure yourself in a legal setting, there should be consequences.

As far as Iraq, call your girl Nancy - and her buddies Mike, Vic, and Marion. She can get an impeachment resolution but together in a snap. Until it passes, you don't have a thing.

Mike Huckabee is doing all he can to see that John McCain gets elected in November. He DOES have many supporters who want him to be presiden (nothing against John McCain) but next. Simple solution to the problem is for McCain to pick Huckabee to be on his ticket and unify the party and help himself win. Now, if Senator McCain would do right by Mike and offer him the no. 2 spot, that would bind Huckabee to McCain for 8 years. If McCain is not too bright and doesn't pick Huckabee, many people think he won't be able to win. If Huckabee has supporters who feel good about his FUTURE chances, nothing to do with McCain, I think it's great they are supporting him. I hope McCain picks Huckabee as his vp and wins in November, but if he doesn't I'll be right there plugging away for Huckabee 2012!!!!

Timmy is both a snake AND a Moron, and has a permanent lop-faced leer. Members of Huck's "circle" all look like refugees from the Addams Family...or maybe Fellini's? "Freaks!" The sooner we're rid of them the better - GO DOWN with John McBush III

I'm just askin'............is eLwood the same person as L. Wood??????????????
Just like things kept simple.
Can't imagine why vice/idiot were not removed from office long ago,,,in first place, I don't
believe a certified retard can legally hold the office, second place..........I have no idea what
the Dem members are so timid about, mucho grounds for the death penalty, Gawd, a little
blow job seems so innocent now,,,,like kindergarten, childs play, after the past, almost please
God, 8 years.

As Brother Zonker would say:

People who live in glass houses shouldn't get stoned.

PS I hope these comments are not a sampling of the people who live in Arkansas. It is embarrassing to have this junk written on here and it doesn't even pertain to the article!!!

I'm just askin'............is eLwood the same person as L. Wood??????????????<<

Yes. My comp crashed a couple of times in the past several months. When I logged on after the first crash TypeKey would not recognize my original moniker, Lwood. So, I changed it to eLwood. Then after different isp was added it would not recognize eLwood so I went with L.Wood. Then TypeKey would not recognize L.Wood after a week and I tried eLwood and it worked. So now, after a new hard drive has been added is not recognizing eLwood.
Thanks for asking.

Gee...I hate to spoil your fantasy, nrobyar, but if our assessment of Huck and the Hutch brothers offend you, I'd scurry on back to the Ark Family Blog and get back to bashing gays.

I doubt the 12,000 solid Huckabee supporters across the US would help Grandpa McCain very much. And while McCain may occasionally put a hug on Bush or Falwell or Hagee or Huckabee, he of all people would rather die than be locked in a room with them, much less spend the next 4 fantasy years with one as his running mate.

Still, the only hope Grandpa Munster has is to hook up with one who handles snakes just enough to get the loony rightwing Bible beater votes this fall. He's really shooting fish in a barrel because the religious lunatics only other choice is to stay home on election day and by nature they feel so self-important that they can't stand to not cast a vote. So McCain will get them in the end without the help of a Huck or Hutch.

So don't worry your little airy head none, go back to watching your Rapture meter for signs of movement and if you can believe Huckabee is so great, you'll be able to imagine he's the next President no matter what serious candidate winds up with the job for the next 4 years. I have to admit I do wish at times I had imaginary friends too, it must be comforting in the middle of the night when even the dogs are asleep.

It appears that the McCain folks know this happened. Politics are an ugly game yet poor McCain..always getting pimp-slapped..Bush in 2000 and now this. ASA and Huckabee leading this McCain lovefest with borther Tim slidding it in the same week John's in town?...love it.

We will make certain that McCain knows the backstabbing gladhanders greeting him today..and if he's as mean and ill-tempered as suggested, McCain will make certain this latest move puts a dagger in Huck-a-boob's #2 assssperations!

Thanks Max and to all that help expose this slimefest.

Boy, that's rich...thinking the 'genius, witty, apropos...' comments on this thread are embarrassing while touting that fat, bible-thumping, hypocritical, money-grubbing, ignorant ex-preacher for VP...HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Thank you, nrobyar, for the laugh.

Is it a coincidence that the Arkansas Ethics Commission has scheduled a training session on campaign finance laws at the Little Rock Chamber today? Will anyone attend?

I think the reason that some people have a hard time with Mike Huckabee is that they are unfamiliar with the concept of integrity. Our society has become so polluted, so jaded that when a person of honor and goodness comes along the only thing those lacking in integrity can think to do is come up with disparaging words like "huckster" to describe someone like Mike.

Mike Huckabee is the best thing to hit this country since Ronald Reagan. He is awesome, and people are beginning to understand this. He may not have won the nomination this time around (although for a man who was an unknown at the beginning of the campaign he sure did great!) but I believe he will eventually be our president, and it will be the saving of our once great nation. Go Mike!

I just want to see HuckaBush block the evangelicals from rallying behind McCain. It will be enough to secure a Dem win in November, and when Huck runs in 2012, it will be a bloodbath. That pathetic excuse for a human being doesn't stand a chance in a general election. He would get hammered from every direction...fiscal conservatives, social liberals, immigration zealots, ethics advocates, etc....

Mike Huckabee has as much integrity as an Enron executive.

I would be very disappointed in John McCain if he were to choose Mike Huckabee as his running mate. Mike Huckabee is not qualifed to be President. He was a fairly good governor, but its a huge leap in responsibility to go from governor to President. Mike is certainly an inspirational speaker, but he is intellectually lazy and has a poor understanding of legal and policy issues. I would much rather see an extremely bright problem solver like Mitt Romney as the VP. We need the best and brightest as President to solve America's problems.

"I think the reason that some people have a hard time with Mike Huckabee is that they are unfamiliar with the concept of integrity."

BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!! Stop it! Please! You and nrobyar are KILLING me with this stuff!

So, Mrs. P, where was Huckabee's integrity with the Lord's Ranch airplane? The State Police plane? Crushing the computer hard drives? His theology "degree"? The Governor's mansion furnishings? I could keep going all day...

My favorite, though is the AT's nickname "His Petulancy' in response to Huckabee's decision to cut the AT out of the Governor's information loop. Yup, he's a person of honor and goodness, all right...

Mrs. P, its time for your meds.

I would like to say there is something wrong with the posts here and my post is signed Arkansas Red. I denounce the derrogatory remarks made at 10:20 pm that appear to have nrobyar as the author. I did not write that junk. My posting is ALL positive for Governor Huckabee. He is the best thing to happen to the Republican Party in my lifetime and I am proud to be a su0pporter. He will be the next president (no.45). Whether McCain wants to be the 44th will depend on whether he chooses Huckabee as his vp. In my opinion, McCain/Huckabee will win in November. I believe itll take a powerful TEAM to do it. There is just no one else out there that can pull in the votes that Mike Huckabee can add to McCain's ticket. I think this was meant to be because, to be truthful this time around, I doubt Mike could have pulled it off by himself either but McCain/Huckabee is the whole package and that team will win!!! McCain/Huckabee'08...priceless!!!
