Irony of the day: 374-FREE
Editor and Publisher yesterday and the Democrat-Gazette today noted that the Ark. Democrat-Gazette in recent months had not been immune from a national trend of declining daily newspaper circulation -- a nearly 7 percent (make that .7 percent, Editor and Publisher misfigured the math) drop in Sunday circulation for the six months ending March 31. Publisher Walter Hussman was quoted on the impact of the proliferation of free content on the web.
"It is hard to compete with free," said Hussman.
Indeed, but help me. Wasn't there a newspaper war in Arkansas won by a publisher who gave away free classified ads, who carried untold numbers of free-riders on home delivery, who gave away a free newspaper to just about everybody in the city every Wednesday and who printed more pages no matter whether revenue supported it or not? And didn't the same guy recently start a free newspaper in LR?

Good dig, Max.
I still don't know how the Gazette lost the court case.

Indeed, but help me. Isn't there a "newspaper" man still bitter about losing?
I do think Hussman needs to get rid of the subscription to online content at the ADG, as well as redesign his site.

That is some delicious irony.
The newspaper man Max may or may not be bitter about the outcome of that newspaper war, but I sure as hell am.

I thought the article said 0.7 percent drop?
Free doesn't have to mean accurate, I suppose.
All too often.

Take your pick.
Editor & Publisher link says Sunday Circ fell 6.9% but DemGaz link says fell .7%.
So, let's bet and see if ARTimes rounded up E&P's figure or misreported DemGaz's figure. Is E&P free?
So Max, who wins the bet?
ARK. BLOG: I used E&P figure (and rounded it to nearest whole number as the D-G did). The problem is that E&P misfigured the math. D-G was correct. E&P, like the D-G, has some free content on the web but much is available only to paid subscribers. The magazine itself is not free.

The sainted wife and I went to Roy Dudley's recent "estate sale" of ancient Arkansas Gazette items that had been found in the Gazette Building's basement. There were some real treasures there. Seeing all those old newspapers (we couldn't resist buying a few of 'em) and other odds and ends of Gazette memorabilia made us both wanna sit down and cry.
But, as long as there's an Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, we'll have it thrown at our door. A long-time friend at Clarksville was transferred to Baton Rouge a year ago. The only thing he laments about living there is the absence of a newspaper that's circulated statewide. Thus, he knows little if anything about what's happening in Bastrop, Alexandria, Shreveport, Winnfield, Bogalusa, Lake Charles, or New Orleans.

It is not that I don't want a newspaper bill. What I don't want is the shite corporate newspaper itself, with its pompous pseudo-intellectual nonsense editorial page. I go where the real news is, and yeah, bonus, it is free to those with internet or a ride to the library.

The article in today's DemoGaz says they lost 1,816 Sunday subscribers, from 276,310 to 274,494. I may be math-challenged, but I'm having a hard time making that come out to 7 percent, or even 6.9. Maybe E&P has better cipherers up there in the big city.
UPDATE: OK, Max, thanks for doing the math after the fact. :)

Hussman could compete better if he had better writers, better content, and better editorial policies.

Any time Max mentions Hussman, Arkansas Red defines this as bitterness. Well, considering the umpteen zillion times A-Red talks about Hillary, then he must be extraordinarily bitter and ultra-spiteful about her. That's if A-Red follows his own rules & logic.

In order to lose a "Newspaper War" there must be warring newspapers. Although one could make the case that "The Democrat" was a newspaper, such an argument would ultimately rely on the same semantic sophistry that allows FAUX NEWS to employ Goebbels' techniques in their partisan shilling. The judge ruled that economic terrorism is the purview of the ruling class; thus, there was no war. Is this why no matter how much of a disservice the mainstream media does to the American electorate there will be no opportunity to view "Al Jazeera News" on the television?

I remember October 19, 1991 being one of the saddest in Arkansas history when the Gazette was sold to the Hussman Clan. I remember one union crusader named Max Brantley and his friends who worked for the Gazette beating the brush to find money to buy their besieged newspaper before it was sold to the scoundrels at the Democrat. News reporting has been on a slow decline after the merger. If Hussman really wanted to reverse the trend he should fire his editorial staff then outsource to the ARTimes.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette will inevitably fail because Hussman can't fathom the revolution that has taken place in communication. This revolution has changed the rules for advertising and even if Hussman could comprehend the magnitude of the change, he would probably not be able to accept it. The only thing keeping his crummy excuse of a newspaper afloat is the money that Dillard's foolishly lavishes him with. Those days will have to come to an end if Dillard's wants to survive, which is another matter altogether, (but definitely related).

Hey dude come to Rwing Chickenopolis. We go to our favorite Thai restaurant and watch Al-Jazeera regularly. It's indeed an entirely different point of view than what is provided by domestic corporatism.
durango-
I keep one copy of the Ark D-G inside of plastic in my desk drawer for the few times my rwing bro visits.
I proudly have it lying around. In two inch letterS the headline exclaims-
