Zoo closed

The Little Rock Zoo is closed today because of a power outage, the city's PR guy Scott Carter has notified us. Not a good day to go anyway! Check the jump for the release.

LR Zoo Closed Today Due to Power Outage

(Little Rock, AR – April 4, 2008) As a result of the storms in Little Rock on April 3 and 4, the Little Rock Zoo does not have any electricity.

Therefore, the Zoo will be closed today, Friday, April 4.

According to Zoo Director Mike Blakely, “Because the Zoo is a largely an outdoor experience, people might not think about electricity affecting our operations.  But the ‘behind-the-scenes’ elements of the Zoo are very dependent on electric power.  I am proud of the Zoo staff for their efforts to ensure the continued well-being of the animals.  I am also thankful to the Little Rock voters who approved the 2004 Capital Bond program.  As a result of that effort, we have additional generators which are assisting us as we care for the animals until the power is restored.”

Once power is restored, the Little Rock Zoo will reopen.  An update will be issued later today or early Saturday regarding the status of Zoo operations on Saturday, April 5.
