A bridge to Argenta

-- Brian Chilson photo
Or a bridge to Little Rock, depending on your point of view.
Assorted dignitaries turned out Saturday morning for the dedication of the new pedestrian link over the Arkansas River on the old Junction Bridge, once a railroad span.
Lots of folks turned out to try it on a splendid spring day. And on to the rest of the day's events. The Little Rock Film Festival drew great crowds at venues large and small.

I've done a tripleheader at the Little Rock Film Festival so far today. "The Promotion" (stars Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly, above, vying for promotions as Chicago supermarket managers) was a sellout and had plenty of laughs. "Lioness" was another moving tribute to the sacrifices of our troops in Iraq, particularly female troops, and included a guest appearance by Shannon Morgan, the soldier from Mena, who's a key character in the documentary about women in unexpected combat roles. "Beyond the Call," a documentary about three Americans who mount independent relief efforts in godforsaken places also was a winner.

Comments
The Bridge will have its usual critics, but it is one more great stride toward the central area becoming a livable city, where not every activity involves hauling around 3000 lbs of metal and plastic.

Help a Fort Smith boy out here....is this the same bridge from earlier threads that were about the Clinton foundation not putting out the money and it going to cost 10 million dollars to adapt? Or are ya talking about another bridge. It's so hard to see all the way to LR from FS ya know.

DBI, they kind of look alike but the bridge by the Clinton library is about a quarter mile downstream from the Junction Bridge.
Then there is The Big Dam Bridge a couple of miles upstream. It's pretty dang cool.
Prediction:
Obama/Webb 08
vs.
McCain/Huckabee 08

Yes, very important that no one confuses the Junction Bridge conversion with The Clinton Foundations conversion of the Rock Island bridge. The Rock Island bridge will appear to have a ramp on both sides so wheeled devices don't have to wait on an elevator

Thanks Mojo. Anyone know how much this bridge conversion cost? Here in Fort Baptist, we tear down old bridges. But then again, most of them went to Oklahoma, so having them gone is for our own protection.

DBI, 5.8 million on the Junction Bridge.
12.8 million for the Big Dam Bridge.
I've heard the Clinton Foundation had 5 million to redo the Rock Island Bridge, and needs 5 million more.

When its important to them, The Foundation is very very good at raising money.
They started construction of the Clinton Library with only $20M in the bank and raised more in time to complete the project.

Man, for the money we/they are spending, we ought to be able to get one of these:

RE: the headline and lede
To clarify, it's the bridge from Argenta to South Argenta.

What riles me up about this whole ordeal is that they closed the LR side at 6pm Saturday to start setting up for RiverFest, which today at about 6 looked like mostly installing gates and security guards, not productive work. The RiverFest bunch seems to want more and more time of public space every year to close off parks/etc down town so they can put up a few tents and say they are 'setting up' for nearly a week.
