Dogtown doings

The Dogtown Wire, an on-line "newspaper" covering North Little Rock, is up and running. Leading coverage at the moment is Mayor Pat Hays' continuing effort to moor another derelict naval rust bucket on the Arkansas River.
I probably should mention that said rust bucket is also getting featured treatment on this newish blog, Anybody But Pat Hays in 2008.

I must confess that I am trey jealous of North Little Rock's Navy. I would so like to walk down to the Arkansas River here in Fort Baptist and look lovingly on their rusting hulks. You have to be pretty sharp to catch a Ranger bass boat going past the bridge these days. Now and then a big tug will come along pushing many barges. It thrills my little heart to no end.
If I lived in NLR I'd be down there with my wire brush and a big bucket of Rust-oleum making em shine while I whistled Andrews Sister's songs to myself. Fort Baptist was chosen for the site of the John Paul Hammerschmidt Transportation Museum back when I was young and good looking and so far not a shovel has been turned on the project. So......I'm jealous, yes I am, of Mayor Hays's Navy. If he ever gets tired of them boats I will officially accept them on behalf of Fort Baptist.

I must say DBI, my kids always asked on the way to Florida to stop each year at the USS Alabama. They also enjoyed the tour of the submarine "Drum" and the air museum. Very seldom do you get 10 feet away from an S71 Blackbird or a fully loaded F16.

Goof: A vas defferens between the USS Alabama and Pat's navy, but I understand the "draw". I'm one of those (white) alabama school kids who gave a dime(and raised a few more) in the mid-fifties to help fund the Alabama; an excellent way to get the populus involved without pissing off the taxpayers(and newspaper editors). Little Richard's still right on: "It ain't what you do, It's the way how you do it".

Always a thrill, when taking a sunday drive along the coast, to see that great ship
moored in Mobile Bay.

Jazzy - it took us three years to tour the entire ship! The first year was tour A, followed by B and C the next 2 years. My boys loved that boat well into their teens.

I think it would benefit mightily from a couple of coats of purple paint, DBI.
Who was the Pulaski County judge who slathered purple on everything in his domain?

No open line yet tonight, but I'll put this here anyway.

Man finds check from 1971 after Arkansas tornadoes
EVENING SHADE, Ark. - Tornadoes that tore through Arkansas last week picked up homes, cars and everything in between - including a check from 1971.
Gene Floyd of Sulphur Rock went to check on his camper Sunday at his hunting camp near Evening Shade and said everything looked normal, until he saw something lying on the ground. It was a check, fold in half, showing only a few stains to give away its age.
Floyd said he was surprised when he saw the check drawn on Sept. 1, 1971 from a bank account in Heber Springs - about 50 miles away. The check, for $1.50, was made payable to A.E. Williamson by Mrs. Bruce Murphree. The check bears the note "Gazette for August" and shows it was later cashed.

Ah, the good old days. Gone with the wind--and later found. Mrs Murphree must have been a conscientious subscriber.

The late, great, inimitable Arch Campbell.
