Election cleanup

In the clear light of dawn, anything new to observe among you?

It's on to fall.

John Edwards' impressive margin in the House District 38 race is encouraging for Democrats. Former Huckabee administration secrecy enabler Kelly Eichler relied on her hard-working PTA and neighborhood cohorts to blanket the Heights and win an easy victory over an invisible Republican opponent in her primary.

The fall will be a different matter and a presidential election in the bargain, but it's worth noting that well more than double the number of voters participated in the Democratic primary in this race compared with the GOP primary -- 2,959 to 1,299. There was no more to be gained by choosing the Democratic ballot here than a runaway  primary victory for the sitting county judge, so it's a fairly decent measure of the relative political composition of the district.

In the hours after I quit last night, it became clear that Sen. Jim Luker of Wynne had easily won re-election. He's one of the brightest lights in the Senate. Jim McLean's triumph over Sen. Jack Critcher's wife in Batesville was a biggie. The defeat of a Boozman for a House seat in Bentonville and of a Hutchinson clan member for a judgeship in NWA might be another signal of an end of a dynastic era in Arkansas Republicanism.

Sen. Dave Bisbee led the ticket for Benton County judge but will be in a runoff with Bill Adams, who undoubtedly will continue to be supported by a non-aligned, secretly funded 527 organization. Whatever happens, the Bisbee clan can't claim Benton Boss Hogdom. Wife Linda Bisbee lost her race for state House to Duncan Baird. Tim Summers, derided as a RINO for once having served as the last elected Democratic official in the county before switching parties, nonethless beat true-red GOPer Vickey Boozman, wife of the late fomrer state senator and Health Department director.

Aggravation: The Pulaski precinct results are available, though at this hour only in the 2008 archives in a cumbersome precinct-by-precint format. Here's the home page.

SHOCKER: Gunner DeLay, currently a prosecutor in Fort Smith, a former senator and general GOP big wig, was clobbered 55-45 in a race for district judge against City Prosecutor Claire Borengasser. DeLay had the support of virtually every big-name attorney in Fort Smith, from Brad Jesson on the left to Joey McCutcheon on the right.

Any other nuggets worthy of notice?

With the Henry Clan beating the Hutchinson Clan in the West and the Campbell Clan beating the Womack Clan in the East - the third CD starts to look like it may be ripe for an upset.

In his second attempt to get his job back, Andy Lee finished a distant third for sheriff in the Benton County primary. He only got 21%. Two years ago in a two person race, he lost 70-30. Now, maybe he'll go away.

If he's as great as his hype suggests, why can't he get out of the Republican primary in two different election? He's gotten worked both times.

Ann Clemmer won Dist 29 without a run-off. Good news for all!

"Ann Clemmer won Dist 29 without a run-off. Good news for all!"

I assume you are not referring to "all" of the people of Arkansas.

>>it's worth noting that well more than double the number of voters participated in the Democratic primary in this race -- 2,959 to 1,299.<<

If I'm not mistaken that's been the trend across the entire nation, save for the Alpha Neputne Landing Base some call Texas? Wait ! Tom Delay's former Congressional seat is held by a DEMOCRAT. Is there hope that reason and sanity can shine its light into the darkened caves of Neptune Base Texas?

Benton County and NWA results confirm that Hutchinson Brand is no longer a consumer favorite.
First went Tim, then Asa! down the tubes, now the 'brudder-in-law lost in a landslide defeat.
Let Freedom Ring.

I'm looking forward to the cleansing tide that could sweep Chickenopolis come November. Fayetteville has solid liberal running against a few Chamber of Commerce types for head of the city.

This will be the year for upsets and reversals. It's in the stars and planets.

I have such a visceral hatred for the name "Delay" that I'm tempted to spend my own money to run some headlines in every large city that Gunnar lost big. I would love to believe we've reached an end to thug power in politics. Maybe we would if the MSM didn't feel it necessary to drag their endless parade of token neanderthals before the public in an effort to call themselves "balanced". Allowing someone to press an issue that is clearly false is not balanced. I paraphrase the remark of a wise man recently who said something like, "experts disagree on whether the earth is round or flat".

Pulaski County figures -
Not voting for unopposed candidates:

Democrat - 34%
Republican - 22%

Does Pryor have any worries?

It is worth noting that Barbara Nix sent incumbent Lamont Cornwell packing for his next big road trip. It was a 58-42 whomping.

ARK. BLOG: Yes, even though Cornwell sent out repeat mailers with him in the warm embrace of Gov. Mike Beebe, whose magic apparently didn't translate down ticket here. Cornwell had a self-inflicted gutshot from his taxpayer-funded travels, however.

Somebody clue in KATV that Irma Hunter Brown was BEATEN by Joyce Elliott. Beth Hunt had Brown winning with the votes switched from what the D-G reported. Now, of course, I'm assuming from Joyce Elliott's victory party, and the picture of her smiling face late last night in the D-G, that she indeed did win by the reported amount.

Gunner is an idiot. We shouldn't be surprised the people turned him down, even if the Hardin-Jesson law firm was on board.

Did I mention that Gunner is an idiot?

Dont know how many of you will find Johnson County news interesting, but anyway.........Jimmy Stephens is a former state trooper whose momma, a Coal Hill native, was married to one of the Stephens bond daddies. He donated the money to get the Jones Learning Center at the U of the Ozarks started -- the first of its type in the USA. It's for kids who are college material but have dyslexia, etc. (My son said it's also known as the five-year babysitting plan for rich folks from Texas who are looking for something for junior, but he's a lawyer now, so he's a cynic.).

Jimmy Stephens's current stepfather is Don Shula. That has nothing to do with anything at all here except I thought it's interesting. They have built a big house in Coal Hill for their retirement. He seems like a genuinely nice guy(Jimmy) and has law enforcement experience. however, there was tremendous support for the incumbent. results below.

Remember when the Adult XXX Center started its bidness in clarksville last year and set off such a chain of hissy fits? My other son told me, FWIW, that, when they "erected" (I just had to say that one) their giant sign down there by Wendy's and McDonald's and all, it was the tallest sign in Clarksville (and I guess it is), but when they put that up, Jimmy Stephens handcuffed himself to the sign as a protest -- He lives up on a big hill overlooking the river and I dont blame him for not wanting to see that as the focal part of my view, either.

However, all that XXX stuff seems to have quietened down. I wish we didnt have the sign there; I grew up here, and I don't like to hear people say, Oh yeah, Clarksville, that's where they've got that giant sex-toy store right by the KFC.........but I don't bother them and they don't bother me.

Anyway Jimmy Stephens ran for sheriff of Johnson County, results below:

Johnson County Sheriff

James B. "Jimmy" Stephens, 1434

Norman R. Wood, 403

Sheriff Jimmy Dorney, 2016

Terry Pelts, 336

I regret that I have not had enough coffee yet to tell you if there will be a runoff or not. Just thought someone on the western wall, especially, like DBI, might find this interesting.

Down in Miller County, former ASP Ron Stovall outclassed a five-man (four man, one-woman) field for county sheriff and won without need for a runoff.

RE: Bravo John Edwards!
John, his wife Cynthia and their supporters have tremendous grassroots campaign abilities and understand that "get out the vote" means more than signs with balloons and people waving on the corner. The Edwards campaign for the general will be like th eprimary --- excellent organization, door to door contacts, and a strong get out the vote for him on Election Day. That will be the winning difference over Kelly Eichler, who could not have used Mike Huckabee's name more in her direct mail for the primary. It will be interesting to see if Huck has any influence in the fall, my guess is "not so much".
Agree that Jim Luker of Wynne is an excellent legislator, thoughtful and honest.
Look for former st rep Larry Teague of Nashville who's most likely taking the seat of term limited Sen. Jim Hill, to be influential, particularly on taxes and economic development. Teague won't need on the job training.

ARK. BLOG: For what it's worth, Jimmie Lou Fisher beat Mike Huckabee like a drum in this district in 2002 and his favorability rating didn't get any higher in the neighborhood over the succeeding four years. I don't think he'll be making an appearance on general election mailings, except, maybe, to carefully targeted voters.
