Free Riverfest parking

Not only is it free, but it is just steps away from a main entrance on the North Little Rock side of the river.

Yes, there's a catch. It's a lot set up for bike riders by Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas. It's a move to encourage families to bike to the 'fest.

NEWS RELEASE

Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas (BACA) will offer the 1st FREE Parking opportunity for area cyclists during the Riverfest weekend Saturday, May 24 and Sunday May 25, 2008 beginning at the scheduled event start times. I tried NLR parking one year and it took forever to get out. I had much better luck paying to park on the LR side close to the Cantrell exit. I could be back on I-30 in 5 minutes or less. Gotta get there a little early though.

Fireworks just don't do that much for me anymore and all the music is arena acts. No more BR5-49s, Ho Hums, Brave Combos, Los Lobos, North Mississippi All stars, etc.

Riverfest security is heavy handed. I resent armed men taking my children's bottled water away from them at the gate for security reasons when we all know it's just to make money selling water inside. I prefer Lousiana festivals.

Nice hook.

With gasoline made of increasing proportions of diamond dust and baby panda blood, you can bet I'll be biking to this year's festivities. Good to know that there's a designated space so that biker's don't have to worry about theft or damage.

Thanks!

Great idea. I really like what the biker community has done up in Little Rock. It's like a mini-Portland...

Bugeyed...-

I disagree about all the bands being 'arena acts.' In fact, I'd say the majority aren't. Anyway, there are some excellent regional and Arkansas-based groups playing. You should check them out.

I concur about the "Security Guards."

Any details for security on the bike parking or is it an "at your own risk" service? Claim checks? Cables or log chain with which to lock your bike to?

How many of those yellow city "free use" bikes are still around that were put into service a few years ago?

My bad.

No more do car parking lots insure against theft or damage will this lot insure against the same. However, since bicycles take up such a small space a bunch can fit in a small area and the area will be easy to watch and set up to avoid through traffic. This will allow lot volunteers to watch the bicycles at all times. So, a trusted member of BACA will always be there watching the bicycles until 30 minutes after the last event of each evening.

The city of North Little Rock will provide three bicycle racks. Visitors only need to provide their own lock if they wish to lock onto the rack. We will issue claim checks as an added security.

The yellow bicycles were put into service by LR many years ago but due to lack of control they were getting stolen so the city pulled them. They had them in the basment of city hall until late last year when the city sold them. Before that it used to be you could check one our for free using a drivers license.

It was a shame to loose that.

If its ever done again and if we are asked how to conrol it we would tell them to use a system similar to the cart rental cadies at airports. Insert a coin and unlock the cart. Return the cart, get a deposit back.

But its the caddy that controls the issue of bicycles. Use CC scanners or sell bike tokens for $50. Sell 10 of them and you can get a nice $500 bicycle. Use the token to unlock a bicycle. Return the bicycle to any caddy and get a token back. Keep the bicycle, and the city keeps the token.

Or replace the token with a scan card that tracks who checked out a bicycle and where.
