Houston of the Ozarks

Hmmmm. From the Memphis paper.

When Little Rock native Houston Nutt became Arkansas' coach in 1998, he could already see the future.

"I thought I was going to be there until I was retirement age, and then I was going to step into (the athletic director) shoes of Coach (Frank Broyles)," said Nutt, who resigned after 10 seasons at Arkansas last November to become head coach at Ole Miss.

"He told me that. He told me, 'Let's make that our goal.' He helped me a lot of different ways. He trained me administratively to prepare me in some ways for that.

"But I would never ever think about bringing it up or rushing him out. We had too close a relationship."

Broyles resigned effective last Dec. 31, but the school had already named Pittsburgh AD Jeff Long as his replacement back in September.

A little violin music please.

The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft algae.

This is the same guy that thought he was going to be drafted by the NFL and NBA despite riding the pine for most of his careers at UA and Okie State. What's most tragic for Houston is that he could have been the AD if he had just kept his ego in check for 4 years starting in 2006.

Houston Nutt as AD would have been a total disaster. The days of the old ball coach being put out to pasture as AD ended 25 years ago.

Well, those golden handcuffs will just have to suffice for old Houston I suppose.

What kind of a deal is John White getting to ride off into the sunset? By the way, I hear that he is taking a paid sabbatical for a year...still going to get to live in the new mansion for I while, I guess. Sure wish I could get me a deal like that somewhere.

A close friend here in town is an Ole Miss alum and a big-time Rebel fan. Knowing that I'm an HDN hugger, he invited me to go with him the other night to hear Nutt speak to members of the Little Rock chapter of the Rebel Club. Until then, I had no idea there are so many Ole Miss faithful in LR: Almost every seat in the Crowne Plaza ballroom was taken. And man, do they ever love their new coach, some of 'em seeing him as Johnny Vaught arisen from the grave.

As Nutt entered the room effusively greeting the cheering crowd, it appeared to me that the affection is mutual. And as I listened to him sharing his challenges and speaking so enthusiastically of the future, it occurred to me that he's genuinely thrilled to be in Oxford and that he and his staff are well into the task of rebuilding what has been a faltering program since the exit of Eli Manning and David Cutcliffe. Time will tell whether or not Nutt and his Johnny Rebs can make a go of it. One thing's for sure, though: They'll have my best wishes as they try.

HDN was a cancer to this program and a miserable football coach.

I hope he never wins another football game in his life.

Houston Nutt and Nolan Richardson are not the corporate model. That's why I like them so much. Bobby Petrino might bring something to the UA program but it will not be HEART AND SOUL. He'll fit right in at Tyson/Wal-Mart University. I sure am glad I can't afford tickets any more.

Thank GOD that fraudulent ass clown aka Houston Nutt is no longer our head coach!!!!

While he fucked over his own players and Ft. Smith news anchors (ALLEGEDLY!!),

Houston played the Good Christian Soldier for all the clueless dim witted Repubs --who believe all the garbage in the Dem Gazette-- and played flag football with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes... "SO WE ALL KNOW HE IS A GOOD MAN"

Houston Nutt is a complete and total fraud who was praying for a dirt nap to send Frank into an early retirement. I loved Frank for everything he has done for Arkansas YET grew upset that he held on for far too long while other programs embraced the 21st century....BUT I will always be grateful that JFB held on long enough to prevent Huston Nutt from being our Athletic Director....So Thank you Frank.

Again thank the Lord Houston is gone

And soon so will his cousin George W. Bush

Oh can you imagine a world without Houston as our head coach and W. our President?????

GLORY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN I TELL YOU!!!!

Durango Kid, aka Danny Nutt, there is an old proverb that President Bush likes to MANGLE ...er I mean quote when he is in Tennessee:

FOOL ME ONCE SHAME ON YOU; FOOL ME TWICE SHAME ON ME!!!

The whole state should have listened to that one Offensive Lineman from Boise State who said 10 years ago, "That Houston Nutt was nothing more than a Used Car Salesman"

To be fooled a second time by Houston Nutt's load of bullshit is the first sign of psychosis: trying the same thing yet expecting different results.

ENJOY YOUR NEW CAOCH OLE MISS, I am sure you will have a nice season next year wile Houston plays the Texas transfer Jevin Snead and the rest of Ogeron's fairly loaded recruiting classes...

BUT come talk to me in 10 years and tell me it was not a mistake to let that fraud on your campus.

THANK GOD HDN IS GONE!!!!!

ROD BRYANT, what the hell are you talking about???

Do you have the same problem with Sports that you do with Politics...I.E. you DON'T PAY NEARLY CLOSE ENOUGH ATTENTION.

Because that is the only way I can understand you clumping Republicans and Democrats as one in the same (the Brotherhood exlcuded) when it comes to Politics.

AND when it comes to Sports clumping Nolan Richardson and Houston Nutt together???

Nolan and Houston are POLAR OPPOSITES in philosophy, style, sincerity, passion and everything else!!!

I agree with everything you said about Nolan, he was a maverick and a groundbreaking coach who was a God send to this university. No matter how many times he may have talked out of turn. He was the best thing that ever happened to University of Arkansas sports. I can only imagine where we would be had we not run him off and the likes of Igouladala and Okafor had been on our campus at the beginning of this century. I can promise we would have had a few more National Championship banners to hang in Fayetteville.

BUT the racist SOB Frank Broyles ran him off 5 years after winning a National Championship. I still would like to personally apologize to Nolan on behalf of everyone in the state and the University of Arkansas. If he is reading, "Nolan I am so sorry, please forgive us."

Meanwhile, Houston is the ultimate "Corporate" Coach who managed to lie cheat and steal his way into Frank's good graces. And Frank stood by him to the very end despite an overwhelming out poring of protest from the fans. Hell it took JFB's retirement to send Houston on his way with his pockets stuffed with Razorback money.

Let me help you out Rod. It's not perfect but its a pretty rule of thumb:

Democrats v. Repubs
Nolan v. Nutt
Good v. Evil

Not to mention for a guy who fancies himself outside the sphere of corporate media influence

You sure buy into all the bullshit put out by ESPN, the NFL, and the Atlanta Falcons that Bobby Petrino is somehow a bad guy ...I guess because its Petrino's fault that his starting QB in Atlanta went to the Federal Pen for 3 years

Bobby Petrino is a great guy, who will be a great coach, and will be at Arkansas for a very long time

Mark it down & stop voting for Nader

I'm glad you've got it all figured out Orval. I cursed Houston Nutt with the best of them, but he kept it exciting. I agree that he made many bone headed calls as a coach-- but I'm not one of these "win at any cost" kind of guys. I like the entertainment of sports-- I like 7 Overtimes. I also like my chickens and tomatoes to be less uniform-- kind of country looking-- not like those orange cue balls you get at sprawl-mart or those boneless bags of antibiotics that Tyson sets forth. I like the idea of home grown talent more than hiring somebody we hope will go 11-0 every year. I hope Bobby Petrino is great and I wish him well but what will it take for him to satisfy the insatiable tastes of college football fans? Even if you win a national title these days you're out on your ass if you have a losing season three years later...
It's also easier to curse homeboys when they make stupid mistakes-- If it's a hired hand like Petrino, you can just dismiss it as he doesn't know any better 'cos he's not from around here...

Orval Eugene,

I'll bet you a 5 dollar bill that durangokid is not Danny Nutt.

Old Blue Eyes,

God knows I'm very much not a fan of White Chancellor John, but if he's going back to a faculty position, he deserves that year's sabbatical to catch up to his field.

DURANGO,

If you truly believe Houston is happy where he is, I'll have some of what you are having.

As far as Ole Miss being happy with him, well, they are idiots. They fired David Cutcliffe, and claim he didn't do a job worthy of their school. Well, you know what? He had a better winning percentage during his time at Ole Miss than Houston Nutt did at Arkansas.

And, guess what? Ole Miss doesn't even have CLOSE to the facilities Arkansas has. Their fans aren't half as rabid. They split a similar recruiting base with THREE legit D-1 schools, whereas Arkansas is the only show in town.

They fired a guy that did better than Houston with less, yet they think Houston is their savior? My god, people really are dumb.

And get this -- I'm not a "hater." I didn't necessarily love Houston, but he was from my hometown and I always rooted for him to do well. Anyone that thinks he is going to bring Ole Miss from the ashes, though, is out of their mind.

"DURANGO, If you truly believe Houston is happy where he is, I'll have some of what you are having." --- jimmy

Take a look at the vitriol above, jimmy. Now, add the $3 million golden parachute to the equation, and yeah --- I truly believe Nutt is happy where he is. Deliriously so. Wouldn't you be? Say what you wish, but I'd offer this bit of unsolicited advice to Petrino & Company: When it comes to Arkansas vs. Ole Miss (on the field or in the recruitment of Arkansas players in the years to come): Watch Out!

Speaking of Petrino, I heard the guy speak at the Little Rock Razorback Club a couple months back. Didn't know what to expect. Had often read that he's an inward man of few words and not terribly engaging or colorful as a speaker. WRONG! He did a great job, both in his talk (laced with humor) and the ensuing Q&A. The crowd loved him. There was much excitement that night about the forthcoming season and Petrino said, "We won't win 'em all, but we'll do fine."

Let's hope so. As with Nutt, I wish Petrino nothing but good things. God knows, college football coaches everywhere need all the support they can get these days. What a helluva way to make a living.

LOL, hugh! Let me go in with you on that bet and let's up the stakes to $500. We would definitely collect. We could split the proceeds, celebrate with a drink, and then take our wives to dinner at Ferneau's!
