Blues on 12th Street

David Koon
The old Safeway store at the corner of 12th and Cedar Streets doesn't look like much these days - a peeling blue hulk of a building, marooned between the Willie Hinton Community Resource Center and the church on the next corner.

For any old photo buffs out there (or history buffs, Cato)...I ran across this cool website. Shorpy is a community photo blog that specializes in found, archival, and historical photographs. Great care was put into transferring the images to high resolution digital images. There are even some daguerreotypes amongst the offerings.
Check it out. There are over 400 pages of photos, so you won't get through them all anytime soon.

19 years ago I spent all day in hospital looking at crown of G'son's head trying to come out
of his mama....had to end in a c-section.
I drove you home in back seat of my car, days later, not going over 20 mph. You were, and
are, more precious to us than the Hope Diamond, all 6 foot 2 of you.
You changed our lives and plans and that is why I work so hard to get Dems elected in the
Fall,,,,for YOUR future and all 19 year olds like you.
We love you thiiiiiiiiis much, Christopher, even if you wrecked the best van in the world.

i don't have a video on them but dylan and the band together were the absolute best. we saw them in 74' in memphis when my wife was pregnant with our son. finest concert i have ever seen. the only time we saw them together but it was an unforgettable night. since then we have seen dylan at least 15 times and he has ranged from good to wonderful but that night when the band was backing him up and doing a couple of sets of their own music was very special.
my son took me to see clapton in memphis also a few years ago on mud island for my birthday. beautiful night and the impressions were doing the backup singing replacing billy preston. it was another memorable night, although he put on just as good a show here at altell. i love live music and when we have a chance to see someone who is among the best there is we try to go. it is not as fun as going to a bar and hearing our son play in kansas city.
just remembering here but another very fun night was clintons second election night when they had the concert at the riverfront. kathy mattea, stephen stills and headlined by tony bennett. we had never seen him before and again it was a night not to be missed. my mother taught me if you have a chance to see someone who is the best at what they do don't pass it up and tony bennett is probably the best male vocalist working today. i have seen palmer and nicklaus in golf, secretariat race, davis cup tennis, great music of all kinds, rock, pop, jazz, classical, ect. i watched ben hogan hit practice balls when i was a kid, heard an environmental lecture by bobby kennedy and seen nathan lane on broadway. i have seen paintings and sculptures you usually only see in books. i have been lucky and i hope to keep adding to my personal life list of seeing or hearing the best. teach your kids to do the same.

So I'm reading the paper a day late and what do I turn up? John McCain will work to protect religious freedom, fight human trafficking and eliminate chid porn. OK, fine aims, I suppose, as far as they go, but these are his overriding thoughts while seeking the presidency?
I gripe about the lack of substance I see in the Democratic race. I worry that Obama is all flash and incapable of leading this country. I've even questioned -- for a very short time -- whether or not John McCain might make a better president than Obama. McCain! The man has to be more out of touch now than Ronald Reagan was at the end of his presidency.
We are in so much trouble.

"John McCain will work to protect religious freedom..."

He means he will bomb Iran for Hagee and Liebermans religious freedom (and MIC profiteers). I really have to wonder if McCain, like lil Bush, wants to outperform his Admiral father, which would mean he fels the needs to blow a lot of **it up.
Btw, Lieberman checked McCain's bearings today.. and claimed they were alright.. Somebody tell Chasv these GOPers are so damn Gay, their just hypocrites too.
Anyone read about GOPers voting against Mothers Day today?
GOPers hate everyone.. children, religious diversity, Mothers, healthy people, any foreigner who is not a target or torture victim. They even hate sex unless there is a lot of self loathing involved.

Just, FYI. Harry Reid will be on FDL taking questions and discussing his book tomorrow. I suspect we will see some very good questions pop up. Will be interesting to see if and how he responds. Wes Clark handled it pretty well, until the questions hit about 5.5 on the difficulty scale.

You're mighty welcome, Never Vote Republican. I just posted the following on another thread, but what th' hell, I'll put it here, too: The NY Times is reporting tonight (11:20 p.m.) that for the first time Obama is leading Clinton in superdelegates, 266 to 264: "Democratic officials said what had been a trickle of superdelegates declaring for Mr. Obama was turning into a steady stream in the wake of Tuesday's primaries, when Mrs. Clinton lost by 14 percentage points in North Carolina and narrowly won Indiana. Mr. Obama is just 166 delegates away from the 2,025 delegates needed to secure the nomination."

I heard today on some tv show that conservatives are happier than liberals. I laughed at first and then I thought that's probably right.<<
They should be. They've taken all the creme from the puff. They have 70% of the pie and this time around they are going for another 4-5%. Gotta leave a tad for the hired help you know. They love war, well let's say they love profitable war and got them a bunch of that. They have privatized just about everything in gubbermint (save for Social Security) and out-sourced it to their own kind. The entire federal bureaucracy is packed with Fundies, down to mail clerks and cleaning crews. Those horrible wage-loving unions have been destroyed and if McBush has his way those commie, child labor laws can be done away with. There's just so many messicuns who can be kept here before Boss Womack deports so using the children of out-of-work & disabled people only makes sense. WalMart is saving door greetin jobs for the elderPoor and god knows there will be plenty of those. I applied for a job as armed floor walker. They didn't understand. I said wait about 6 months.
Hell yes they're happy. If the odds were all in my favor with poor minorities working to make me comfy and rich I would be happy as hell too. If I could totally wreck a once viable company and bail out with a $100 million bonus and low taxes I would be happy too. If I could draw a Congressional pension, complete health care off the struggling taxpayers I would be happy and my girlfriends too.
I got a fund-raising email from the Clinton camp last week asking for any amount you could give. I fwd it to several on my list with the comment "anybody want to give $25-$100 to a couple of multi-millionaires?" I was HAPPY to be of service.

Jazzy, call in and complain every time the lights go out. Every time. If you see a repair crew apparently working on your outage, stop and talk to them. Sometimes they know what's causing the problem but they are only authorized to get the power back on, not fix the root problem. That takes orders from somewhere in Louisiana I believe. If you can get this choice bit of information, put the outage number on speed dial and call again and again, every time the lights flicker. Enlist your neighbors to do the same.
Find out who heads your local office and accost them in the grocery store or on the golf course, anywhere you run into them.
In our case, it was a switch on a pole tripping every time a cloud came within a 100 miles. Literally. Benton had a storm? No lights here. Little Rock? Hot Springs? No lights here.
After about a year of resetting every appliance clock in this house a minimum of once a day, and sometimes a lot more often, Entergy finally got around to fixing the real problem.

goof i am from ft smith but i was in dallas as a teenager playing golf and a friends father said he would take us over to i think it was colonial ,the next afternoon to watch from a distance the great hogan hit balls. i was 14 or 15 and it was awesome. all pros are machines but to think that it was ben hogan made it an awe inspiring experience. in golf spectator events i would rank it up with the pga at southern hills where palmer finished second to dave stocton. he tried as hard as a man can to win that tournament but came up a little short. it was the last major he really had a chance to win on the last day. the atmosphere was electric.

Zonker - my Dad and I followed him one year at Colonial and he was just awesome. For the life of me, I could not understand how a guy that little could hit the ball so far.
Hogan's home course was Shady Oaks and there were times in High School that my buddies and I would go into the men's grill to get a coke and he would be sitting at his table with a bourbon and water and smokes watching the TCU golf team practice on the putting green and driving range.
Heady stuff for a teenager!

"For the life of me, I could not understand how a guy that little could hit the ball so far."
Goof, many years ago at the fabled and long-gone Riverdale Country Club in LR, there was a little old woman (I'd guess around 80) who was on the course almost every day. Couldn't have weighed more than 85 pounds, I kid you not. With what appeared to be a minimum effort and with the smoothest of motion, she could knock a ball 200 yards down the fairway with nary a hook or slice. Never saw anything like it, before or since.
