Crossword/sudoku alert UPDATE
Ah, a rainy day. Good day to re-run a notice I'd posted earlier in the week.
The Clinton School of Public Service will have its second puzzle day today (Saturday), with a guest celebrity crossword writer, Merl Reagle, and what's modestly billed as the state crossword and sudoku championship competition.
Things start cranking up at 1 p.m.
UPDATE: A good crowd and a good time. Wes Lacewell, a finalist last year, won the crossword competition. Beth Levi repeated as sudoku champion. (I tried sudoku. Ouch.)
CLINTON LIBRARY NEWS RELEASE
For the second straight year, the Clinton School will crown the state’s crossword and sudoku puzzle champions at Arkansas Puzzle Day, officiated by famed crossword puzzle creator Merl Reagle, judge and commentator for the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Puzzle enthusiasts of all skill level are invited to participate in the tournaments. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Judge Ellen Brantley was last year's crossword champion.
Reagle, whose puzzles appear in the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and Cleveland Plain Dealer among other newspapers, is prominently featured in the hit documentary film "Word Play." In the film, Reagle constructs a puzzle for The New York Times, which is shown being solved by famous crossword enthusiasts, including former President Bill Clinton, comedian Jon Stewart, Yankee pitcher Mike Mussina and popular musicians The Indigo Girls.

1:00 p.m. – Crossword and Sudoku tournaments officiated by Reagle
4:00 p.m. – Lecture and Discussion with Reagle
Where: Clinton School of Public Service

Comments
Despite being a reasonably intelligent person, I cannot do soduku to save my life. BTW....the headline on your piece about Judge Barnes going light on those crackers down in El Dorado makes reference to "cuddling criminals." I want to go on record as saying I oppose that shit too.

Love soduku and for a while was so addicted that I did every one I could find. Now, not so much but still love it. I even found a great website that takes some of the time out of the 'getting ready' that is so annoying.

A nice lady on a plane ride back to LR from Houston tried to show me how to do it. My brain was impervious to her attempts so I ordered a beer which seemed a more productive use of my time.

My dau-in-law tried to show me my first one, but she does it all mentally and just puts in the numbers. I have to prepare a grid and work backwards from the maybe's to the can't be's till I find the only one's. I really enjoy it but it is an exercise in patience and one mistake can cost you hours. I don't do them often for that reason.

Sudoku is a big-time sport at my house. We love it! I'll repeat an earlier request that was totally ignored: please add sudoku to the weekly editions of the Arkansas Times!

If you want all the free sudokus you can handle, then go to KrazyDad's. (Click on name.)
Click on the level you would like. When it opens up, find the words "more compact 4-per-page format" and click on them. In a moment, a PDF-file will come up that has 800 puzzles on it (100 books, 8 puzzles per book plus answers). Click File and save the PDF file in My Documents or wherever it is easy to access them.
Later, open up the file. The easiest way to print them is to click print, check Page and list the pages you want printed. I usually click through the pages fast enogh to find which ones have puzzles and which have answers. It doesn't take long to see a pattern.
Anyway, because there are 800 puzzles, you can use them over and over. Just be sure to click properties when your Print command comes up and make sure you are on Fast Draft for printing preference. It uses less ink and prints faster.

Well, I think you need to keep the Arkansas Times up on that pedestal a bit longer, Durango, me lad. I tend to hop down often and wander over to the fridge for another cold one. And, I'm just as prone to moon someone from up there as preach.
As for that other paper: More intelligence goes into their puzzles and comics page than you can ever find in the editorial section of the Dem-Gaz. (Unless they print letters from yours truly and like-minded souls!)

One amongst us would emerge the crossword champion if he'd only go to the trouble of getting to the event.
widj, are you aware?

Yes, I heard about it this morning, but honestly, there are plenty of folks around here much faster than I am at crosswords--like the ones that won last year--and my brain just shuts down when it sees the numbers on a sudoku.

Here's a site I used when I was interested. You can play online without the paper business.

You prissy folk are just too brainy for me, no good at puzzles, especially if numbers are
involved.....that part of my brain just failed to develope....I did fail algebra 1 and not
ashamed to tell it.....long as I have 10 fingers and 10 toes I'm ok.
First hubby was a CPA so I didn't need to know how to count.

Ain't no Sudoku at my house, we drive American Fords and Chevys! Whoever this guy is and whatever game he's playing at the Clinton School, it's a damn site better than having Karl Rove speaking. More games....less Republican criminals!
