Forecast: political storm today UPDATE
Gen. Wesley Clark said it on CBS yesterday.
I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president.
The prediction is that the right will go nutz over this today.
UPDATE: Obama condemns Clark statement.
Mainstream media is wildy distorting what Clark said. Kind of reminiscent of how they covered some Clinton campaign statements. Except, this time, the lefty blogs are howling rather than dittoing. At least Obama got some help from a Clinton today:
Statement by Matt McKenna, Director of Communications, Office of President Clinton, on President Clinton's Discussion with Senator Barack Obama:
President Clinton had a very good conversation with Senator Obama today. He renewed his offer to do whatever he can to ensure Senator Obama is our next President.
President Clinton continues to be impressed by Senator Obama and the campaign he has run, and looks forward to campaigning for and with him in the months to come. The President believes that Senator Obama has been a great inspiration for millions of people around the country, and he knows that he will bring the change America needs as our next President.

Comments
I saw the local news version of Clark's comments and I SWEAR he said getting shot down, etc. wasn't the ONLY qualification ...
I'm looking for a transcript.

I meant to add, And of course getting into a fighter jet and getting shot down ISN'T a qualification, but that won't stop the pouncing.

Obama has no military experience and the Democrats get sucked in to seeeming to question McCain's long, documented, and borderline comic book hero military experience.
Who let that happen?

It's a difficult argument to make and not sound like you are belittling McCain's years as a POW, but it is true that while he suffered for his service to this country and was apparently brave - THAT isn't a prerequisite for being a good president. Just like being black or female doesn't all alone, make one qualified to be president.
McCain, IMO shouldn't mention his POW days at all because that does make it sound like he thinks he "deserves" to be POTUS because of what he endured. Let 3rd parties bring that up if they will, but he shouldn't mention it - just like BO should ignore being black.

It's really irrelevant if Clark is right or wrong. I'm going to have to agree with citizen home - he's off the reservation if he thinks this is a good talking point.
Trying a little too hard to be come relevant again Wesley, now that Clinton is old news?

Good for Clark in saying what needed to be said. If being a war hero is a qualification for becoming president perhaps Audie Murphy should have run.

Audie Murphy dled in '71. It's possible he might have run for president after his acting career was over but we would have elected Ronald Reagan instead.

While it may be tactless to disparage time spent as a POW, Mccain certainly didn't learn anything there . And more to the point he missed a period of great change and tumult in history. Who knows what perspective he might have gained had he not been imprisoned.

Looky here. Getting in a fighter plane and being shot down ISN'T a qualification for being POTUS.
Clark didn't disparage McCain by saying that. He recognized McCain's service and sacrifice as a POW.
Obama has never flown or been shot down in a fighter plane, but he's not going around touting such as a qualification. McCain is.

What I read here what you all are saying about McCain proves for a fact Obama damn sure is not qualified to anything but maybe a dog catcher...at least.
Obama has not done one damn thing that is worthy for him to even run for anything but the border.
Why don't you stiff necks say what the you are thinking. You sound like lukewarm and fraid of taking a stand on your beliefs.
I know you vote your pocket books, etc.like the economy and for someone who'll do your work for you.
Obama is nothing compared to McCain!

McCain's service record prior to crashing and the ensuing capture in Viet Nam demonstrates his family connection propelled him forward when no one else without family connections would have been. he graduated at the bottom of his class, he wrecked several planes yet still received promotions, to name two major points.
And the addition benefit we Americans now have with McCains longer tenure in the Senate is proof of how dreadful he is... his experience is awful, across the board.
And on top of that, there is nothing McCain hasn't lied about, nothing. He stands for nothing except for himself and the rich.
He even hides his children because he's embarrassed he adopted a mixed race child. (I worry about that child)

After what the Swiftboaters did to one armed, no leg, Max Cleland and to John Kerry's Purple Heart, who the FK cares what Clark said about McCain. Remember....we've taken the gloves off for this election cycle. Never again will Democrats be beaten while trying to play the game by the rules of polite society.
Oh god......don't beat the Republicans by becoming like the Republicans, you say. We won't, I say. Why isn't it the same, you say? Because it's not a lie to say getting shot down over North Vietnam isn't a qualification for becoming President. It's not. Look it up. It's not a qualification.
In fact the only American President who was ever a POW was our 7th President, Andrew Jackson who was captured at 13 years of age, during the Revolutionary War. That makes the score POW Presidents 1, non-POW Presidents 42. Case closed!

Personally, I really don't care about John McCain's war record. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ARE THOSE ILLEGITIMATE BLACK CHILDREN HE FATHERED! I KNOW IT"S TRUE CAUSE IT CAME OUT IN A REPUBLICAN PRIMARY DEBATE UP IN CAROLINAS. And it come from a man of God too! BOB BROWN UNIVERSITY BRUNG IT UP. There's no debatin that. It's time for JOHN MCCAIN to confess his deeds, come to Jesus and Jesus will forgive him for getting a black woman pregant outside his marriage. He knows you can hide thangs from us mere mortals but chasv will tell you that things can't be hid from the Lord.

70%, you gave it too much time. Clark has already been thrown under the bus and has been laying in the street with treadmarks on his back for at least a half hour.
McCain begs for the Rove treatment. His only supposed strength is his military record, and that has holes in it if anyone has the temerity to point them out. This is how Democrats usually lose, they don't make the difficult arguments when they need to.
My thinking is that the Obama campaign needed to get that meme out there, to bring to the surface an idea that many people had in the backs of their minds before, that McCain getting shot down and captured doesn't really add anything to his ability to serve as POTUS. In my mind, it was a suicide mission by Clark. They threw a piece of meat to the mainstream media to see how fast they would attack on this issue, but had Obama all cued up to knock it out of the park before the wingers got their victrolas cranked up to full speed.
Let this play a little while, then send in some other old Clinton surrogates to agree with Clark, say Paul Begala, but attack the media's response rather than Obama, and to point out the hypocrisy of the McCain surrogates when the real swift-boating of John Kerry took place.

I think this was a great thing for Obama. The more attacks McCain gets on his national security "experience" the more people will begin to see the straw house he's living in. National security is the only thing where people trust the Republicans more than the Democrats -- and it's all hot air, propelled by myths spun about little rich kids riding their daddy's money into officerdom.
I saw Wesley Clark this weeked at the finale of the I Dream A World camp at Quapaw Quarter Methodist. He's a great speaker!

Hillary will continue to be friendly to Obama until her debts are paid. She's quietly hoping for a McCain victory, so she can be Mrs. President in 4 years. It's all about the money. Obama has the money, so Hillary jumps when Obama gives the orders.

This is not about Clark so much as it is Obama's shift to the center; more rightly suck up to the right. His lack of support for opposing the FISA bill, his comments rebuking Clark and now taking moveon.org to task for their "general betrayus" comment earlier this year. All those starry eyed fools who supported him, believing his "movement for change" spiel will now have their eyes opened. With Hillary you'd have got what she said now this guy starts to weasel. The young voters will opt out when they find out it is just the same old shit. They, the Hillary supporters and stay at homers (read racisits) together will make the race a lot tighter than it should be all because Omama is not staying true to his original message. A third bush term becomes a distinct possibility and do you really want the gov of Louisiana as VP, talk about a nutjob.

Wes Clark isn't a politician and this statement shows that clearly. But he has a point..... McCain wants us to trust him with the war because he was in one..... I don't think so! But Obama isn't the most experienced candidate either..... so what's a guy to do?
And is anyone else sick of hearing these candidates "distance" themselves from others? I'm tired of hearing the words "distanced" and "condemned" in this campaign.... and I'm glad Obama dropped Clark the very next day... but it took him weeks to get rid of his crazy, racist preacher. Go figure.

I will never understand why we are so gullible that we SEE a media person set someone up and ask a direct question, and then press on that question sometimes asking it again and again - and when the politician answers the question honestly, the world rushes to comdemn him/her for "getting into that subject at all". Clark was clearly fed the question - "what about McCain's plane crash and subsequent capture - yadayadayada..." and he answered - he didn't rush out there and deliberately try to negate what McCain went thru.
I don't understand the hullabaloo at all.........

So Gen. Westmoreland says-
McCain hasn't had executive level responsibility-so what executive level responsibility has OBomber had?
Serving in the military and getting shot down and surviving torture as a POW isn't a qualification for being president. (Well, I suppose that would at least demonstrate some strength of will and love of country) - so what has OBlarney done to demonstrate his will, his courage or his willingness to put his life on the line for his country?
And speaking of experience - McCain has served as a Senator for. . . how many terms? And how many terms has Ogoober served? Duh. . .
And while we're looking at experience in dealing with political allies and adversaries -- how many bills has McCain sponsored or passed (subject isn't the issue-the question is can he get results)? And how many has Omigosh sponsored or passed? Hmmmmm.
Can Osmoothie point to ANYTHING that he has accomplished that reflects he is more than . . . just Ohotair?
How sad that Westmoreland has degenerated to whoring for whoever the Democrat nominee happens to be. Whatever it takes to get back in the spotlight - script it for him, and no matter how stupid it sounds or makes him look - he will say it.
And judgment, loyalty, integrity . . . how many cronies has Odontbother recently rejected and tried to distance himself from since they are no longer of value to him?
Obrother. Can't believe I pulled a lever for him once.
