New chamber head
CHAMBER NEWS RELEASE
SPRINGDALE – June 26, 2008) After a four month nationwide search, the Executive Committee of the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Arkansas has named Randy Zook as President and Chief Executive Officer of the organization. Zook currently serves as Deputy Director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission. He will assume his new position July 28.
Said Randy Wilbourn, Chairman of the Search Committee, “Randy Zook is exactly what this organization was looking for in a President and CEO. Paul Harvel has given us more than two great years of his talents in resource building and financial stability. We now look forward to a new era of leadership with Randy and the passion and expertise he brings to business, industry and economic development for the state of Arkansas.”
In his new position, Zook will be responsible for leading the state’s largest public policy and business and industry advocacy organization through a shared vision and collaboration among private and public sector leaders. The State Chamber advocates for policies and provides programs that seek to improve education, economic development, tax structure and a more competitive and prosperous Arkansas.
Zook said of his appointment, “It has been an important and meaningful time working with Governor Beebe and AEDC Director Maria Haley as we have helped to create almost 10,000 new jobs in our state. This opportunity to lead the State Chamber of Commerce allows me to continue this work at a different level and in a different arena but with the same partners who share a vision for successful economic outcomes. Collaboration will be the key to building a successful prosperous Arkansas. I am ready to work with the membership, the local chambers of commerce, economic developers and the Arkansas General Assembly as we forge ahead to create even greater opportunities for Arkansas and her people.”
A native of McGehee, Zook is a 1966 graduate of the University of Arkansas where he earned a bachelor of science in business administration. Prior to joining AEDC, he spent nearly 34 years with Atlantic Envelope Company of Atlanta, serving as president and chief executive officer of the $200 million company from 1989 to 2004. After his retirement, he began his second career involved in economic development efforts. In 2006, he served as chairman of the Central Ozarks Task Force for Economic Development and currently serves as a member of the Melbourne Airport Commission.
The Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce/AIA represents over 1,070 businesses and business interest organizations statewide. For over 80 years, the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce/AIA has been the leading advocate for continually enhancing the business climate of Arkansas.

"Is he a good guy, Max?"
He's heading up the state chamber of commerce. That should answer your question.

I met Zook (that's what everyone called him) back in the 70s here in Little Rock--in TGI Friday's where Cotham's now is, if I remember correctly. (When I say everyone, I mean everyone.) Ran into him some years later when he was better dressed than previously, but still friends with everybody. He seemed determined to go places, and so, I guess, he has.
Never had anything against him, and still wish him all the best. Maybe he'll do a good job for us.

Yes, he is the same one that bought and sold the c-store. I have known him for many years. He is a very good person that I think will do good things for the state.

I think he was instrumental in marketing the Boeing plant and Bad Boy Mowers or Tractor Supply or someone in Batesville bought it.
So, that's a good thing.
But the Chamber ??????????? I dunno.

I knew "Zook" at Fayetteville all those years ago. He was a great guy then, and by all accounts still is. The bad news is that Atlanta robbed us of him for three decades; the good news is that he eventually returned to the state. I predict that he'll be an excellent fit with the ASCC/AIA and that he'll work splendidly with the governor, members of the Arkansas General Assembly, and other of the state's stakeholders. Congrats to all.

Zook is a great guy. It was a good day he came back to Arkansas and a great day he took over the chamber. He is a fair minded person, someone who knows where he came from and, of all the choices the chamber could have made, the best for progressives. He can also tell a joke.

I know his family. It doesn't matter how nice a guy you are. When you get paid to push the agenda of a few big businesses, that's called a whore.
It's always amazed me that a society that has a problem with people selling their bodies has no problem with people selling so much more.

Lovin' the "Rashomon" effect. Where everybody has a different take on the same person or event.
I too have known the family for years.
Though I lived out of state most of my life, I saw Randy often when I visited here. He always struck me as highly intelligent, relaxed, focused and direct.
Then I saw him in hospital during a family health crisis a few years ago.
I was stunned. Under stress, in a life-or-death emergency, Randy Zook was the most arrogant, belligerent, egotistical, controlling individual I've ever seen.
The hospital staff couldn't stand him.
So . . . Alan Leveritt thinks Randy's a "great guy."
Meet John Doe thinks Randy's a "whore."
Me? I just think he's a prick.
Feel sorry for anybody who has to work for this jerk.
Then again, maybe he's cleaned up his attitude and morphed into Mother Teresa.
I'm taking bets.
"Rashomon."

Arkansas businesses will see the benefits of Randy Zook leading the State Chamber. He has the knowledge and will not hesitate to be an advocate for our Arkansas businesses. Look for some great things out of the State Chamber.

Here's a bigger question for you. What the hell does the state chamber do other than have a lot of meetings, spread some cash around the capitol and spend most of its time self perpetuating itself with constant membership drives? Same goes for LR Chamber. I've been a member of both for years and have yet to unravel this paradox. So, in reality it really doesn't matter who is at the helm. I would love to be enlightened on this topic.
