Oh, Arkansas

Just returned from a 3,000 + tour (vacation) of north mid-west and I venture to say this country is in one hell of a mess not just in old Arky but everywhere. If we don't get the bush idiot out of the oval office sooner rather than later this will be the Cadillac of vehicular transportation by the end of this year.
Like global warming the Bush Administration has put America's than tenuous situation of can we overcome.

If this scene was in Polk County, the guy would've figgered out a way to rig a gun rack on the tractor/mower, and if it were in Hope the driver and passenger would both be related to our immediate past governor and first -- er -- first lady.
None of the tobacco store drive-in windows in my town are low enough to the ground to allow service to the driver/rider, otherwise it would have been tried here, too.
By the way, wonder if the couple has arrived at any rules about him spitting tobacco juice whilst moving along at a good clip.
Cato, what would some furrin philosopher say about it?

Is the driver (if you will) working out his money or punching up numbers on his cell phone?

hugh mann,
If you will look closely, I believe you'll see that he is fiddling with an abacus which is duct-taped to the steering wheel.

It's nice of her to let him drive.....or I could type....you can bet he gets lots of driving advice from the backseat driver. This old couple should be applauded for not succumbing to the attractions of gay marriage. At the rate we're going I'll be pulling wifey down the street in something less than a car in the very near future. BushWorld ya know.
The plight of the elderly isn't very funny. Far too many are eating dog food or skipping the food to pay for the medicine. And what a shame that cigarettes will shorten this ancient couple's lives if they just live long enough. If the friendly picture-taker had kept following he might have found out the next stop was the XXX store.

Maybe this great pic will be the inspiration for Mark and Blanche's energy legislation.
All the smokers in town are less polluting than the old guys pickup. So raise the tax on cigs and he can not afford to drive it. But the riding lawn mower is ten times more polluting than the pickup so I guess Mark and Blanche the only energy legislation needed is to raise the cig tax 10 more times. Logic 101.

That's right, Phaedrus. Aren't these the same folks who classified SUVs as farm equipment to allow a hefty tax break?
Nothing like climbing up on the ol' Escalade at dawn to break up the sod on a new bean field.

This photograph reminds me of a Disney movie, called The Straight Story, starring Sissy Spacek and the late Richard Farnsworth.
The movie details the three hundred mile journey of an old man who travels to see his estranged brother on his John Deere tractor. I dare anyone to watch, without shedding a tear.
One might be reminded everyone that doesnt drive a Mercedes Benz is still a worthwhile person.
A link to a NY Times review is provided.

Don't worry EWC, we all suffer from sticky keyboards or, in my case, fingers that can't keep up with the thoughts and a deficiency in proof-reading.
When we have all moved back to grass-fed, horse drawn transportation and the Amish own the country from early preparation ,watch Blanche and Mark propose Arkansas horse licensing, equestrian rider/driver licensing and a hitching post surcharge on raising hay and oats for winter feed, but they'll probably set-up the barn mortgage payments for an income tax deduction.
Hugh, he's using his Blackberry to sign Halter's lottery petition.

Ms Blanche will set up the barn for free gubbermint financing. She won't screw around with tax deductions. She wants the whole 'form' paid for by taxpayers then she wants no taxes on any of it
when she dies and passes it along.
Think that's how "subsidies" work.

Methinks you are correct, Louie. Some years ago, A few miles from here at Cove, AR, a man rode his lawnmower into the small berg, pulled out a gun and shot the mayor and killed him. Got back on his mower and went back home to finish the mowing.
Around here a few years ago here locally, a man who could not pass the needed requirements to get a drivers license, hooked a trailer to the back of his tractor, put in the necessary lights, and used the tractor as a mode of transportation since no driver's license in required.

Since we're speaking of riding lawnmowers as modes of transportation, check out this short video (3:18) of a feller being pulled over for...driving a mower on the highway (for starters). The phrase "if worse comes to worse" comes to mind.

Stories are published in the news, on a fairly regular basis, describing some DUI offender who was subsequently picked up for driving his mower to the bar / package store after his drivers license was revoked.

Straight Story was based on a true saga --one of the best movies ever. Put it on your DVD or download list if you missed it. Unless Philip Martin didnt like it.

I know a person that lives in a rural area that has to use a wheelchair that uses a lawn mower to get around outside. Works great!
Perhaps those that can't get driver's licenses, and can't afford an electric cart, would resort to lawn mowers to get around. Ya do what you gotta do!

With gas hovering near $5 dollars and the state police budget being cut, Governor Beebe and Ginger had to park the Tahoe and borrow AHTD transportation. AHTD employees have been asked to ride each other.
