Right-wing echo chamber

Even Dick Cheney has backed off the erroneous myth that China is drilling for oil for Cuba offshore near Florida. Not the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. More on the myth here. The D-G floated the story again today in an editorial in support of more offshore drilling.

John McCain has just added his voice to letting oil exploration proceed off our coasts, just as Brazil is doing in the South Atlantic or, for that matter, the Chinese are doing for their Cuban proxies just off Florida.

McPander and his new henchman Monkeyboy say "Let's just DRILL our way out of this energy deal." BRILLIANT!!!

While China has not started drilling yet, they have signed the leases. It's just a matter of time. China is very secretive and patient.

It's stupid to tie our hands and not use our energy resources to become more self sufficient. If we want a vibrant economy, we need an increasing supply of energy. As the energy supply dries us, so do the good jobs.

"...we need an increasing supply of energy. As the energy supply dries us, so do the good jobs. - Severus"

No, we need to diversfy our manners of energy. That will do more to create jobs than a simplex avenue of energy - oil. As long as oil is our only venture, we will fail to truely achieve oil independance at any time in the future.

An energy program that is multi directional will succeed.

In a Tuesday speech McCain claimed drilling is so "safe" that "not even Hurricane Katrina and Rita could cause significant spillage from battered rigs off the coasts of New Orleans and Houston."

Picking up on the Rove "talkers" a growing chorus of EEC conservatives repeated the claim as justification for expanded drilling:

George Will: "Hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed or damaged hundreds of drilling rigs without causing a large spill."

Wall Street Journal editorial: "Hurricanes Katrina and Rita flattened terminals across the Gulf of Mexico but didn't cause a single oil spill."

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne: "When Katrina and Rita hit the Gulf Coast where we have about 4,000 oil and gas platforms, 3,000 were in the direct line of the storms - the most significant storms we've seen ever - and 3,000 of those had to be shut down. We had no significant oil spill. The system worked."

Fox News' Dick Morris: "And by the way, the safety concerns, Hurricane Katrina didn't cause any leakage or any spill in the Gulf of Mexico oil wells."

However, the would-be Liar-in-Chief's replacement is wrong, as the Repubs and Cons have been repeatedly for the last 7 1/2 years. i.e.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9365607/
"44 oil spills found in southeast Louisiana
Largest is nearly 4 million gallons, most big ones are on Mississippi River . . . 7:14 a.m. CT, Mon., Sept. 19, 2005 . . .More than 500 specialists are working to clean up 44 oil spills ranging from several hundred gallons to nearly 4 million gallons, the U.S. Coast Guard said . . ."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2005/sep/16/usnews.hurricanekatrina
". . . The oil pollution in the wake of Hurricane Katrina could be among the worst recorded in North America, officials trying to coordinate the clean-up say. The US coastguard, which is responsible for the marine environment, said yesterday more than 6.5 million gallons of crude oil had been spilt in at least seven major incidents . . ."

But it's O.K. McBush, Rove, and the die-hard Busheviks figure the U.S. Voters are so desperate because of the fix the Bush administration has put the country in on gasoline and fuel that once again they'll be oblivious (click handle) to the history of Katrina. They'll just remember the image of benevolent Bush flying at 30,000 feet above the Katrina damage gazing compassionately out the window as he returned from celebrating McBush's 69th birthday while New Orleans drowned.
