Testing Obama

John McCain seems almost a second thought as the fall campaign begins in earnest. Here, a blogger provides links to articles 1) assailing Obama from the Religious Right (James Dobson) and 2) noting Muslims' unhappiness with Obama. (Why, really, is it a "smear" to be called a Muslim?) A Washington Post columnist who pounded Clinton in Obama's behalf during the primary campaign now finds McCain's character preferable in light of Obama's change of direction on campaign financing.

But here is the difference between McCain and Obama -- and Obama had better pay attention. McCain is a known commodity. It's not just that he's been around a long time and staked out positions antithetical to those of his Republican base. It's also -- and more important -- that we know his bottom line. As his North Vietnamese captors found out, there is only so far he will go, and then his pride or his sense of honor takes over. This -- not just his candor and nonstop verbosity on the Straight Talk Express -- is what commends him to so many journalists.

Obama might have a similar bottom line, core principles for which, in some sense, he is willing to die. If so, we don't know what they are.

Hillary's with him, at least. I still think the ultimate shape of how the media line up on this election will be interesting if not the determining factor. McCain has flip-flopped, most recently, on oil drilling. His man Charlie Black blundered terribly yesterday on terrorism. But my general impression is that McCain errors have a shorter half-life than do Obama's in the columnist/blog/cable echo chamber (MSNBC a notable exception). Ask Al Gore about how assigned story lines refuse to die -- still.

Comments

First and foremost the media must make a race out of this. They will be on McCain's side until his numbers come up. It is all about their celebrity and making their own opinion more important.Even Max has to keep readership up on the blog to make the advertisers happy. It is what passes for journalism these days.

But, Max---

Gore *invented* the internet! Why would someone use a blog to attack him?

Sorry...couldn't resist.

I agree with Fletch, BUT, so far there isn't much of a race and interest is excruciatingly low. Somebody better get busy.

I think it's interesting...we're watching McCain't get spanked day in and day out. What's not fun about that?

McCain might be getting spanked day in and day out, but he will still win. Folks will not vote for Barack Hussain Obama. Go to the coffee shops in Jonesboro, ElDorado, Prescott, Texarkana, Fort Smith, Searcy, Fayetteville, Mt. Home, Hot Springs, Murfreesboro, Fouke, Dierks, Mena, Harrisburg, Dumas, etc. etc. any week day morning and asked the retirees what party they are a member of, and they will all say with a smile, Democrat. Then ask them who they will all vote for and they start laughing and say McCain.

Yeah, and if those were the people who decided American elections we would have nuked Iran already. It will be close. It will be interesting to see if Obama can handle the pressure for 6 months. The Dems always seem to pick the loser, or pick a winner and run a bad campaign.

Tough election? yeah....

Close? i doubt it...

Expect to hear the phrase "President-Elect Obama" before you go to be on Election Night.

that's supposed to be "go to bed" on election night

McCain's honor? What honor?

He threw that away when he gave up on torture. He locked hips with Bush and Cheney and turned American into a nation that actively legally conducts torture on a global scale. If their is one place McCain had honor, it was on that issue..and he sold out there too. There is no honor, in McCain

Also... how about scoring ZERO on half the population of the USA, all women? There is no honor in McCain

Abandoning a wife in serious health trouble for a super rich much younger wife? There is no honor in McCain.

Unapologetically calling your wife a c*nt in public. There is no honor in McCain.

Wishing America would attack another nation of 75 million people for no valid reason. There is no honor in John McCain.

Wanting to provide more tax cuts for the rich and provde less health care for working Americans. There is no honor in John McCain.

Breaking his own campaign finance reform law. There is no honor in John McCain.

Not firing a person on your campaign who wishes for more terror attacks in order to win an election? There is NO HONOR in McCain.

Voting 88.3% ith the Fascist GOP in the Senate? There is n honor in McCain.

When is the last time... the so called family values party candidate spent a day at the park or zoo or anywhere with a photograph of him with his entire family? He's hiding his mixed race children!

There is NO HONOR in John McCain!

Precisely, ES. McCain't abandoned everything independents loved about him and embraced neoconservatism. Take it from a man that supported John McCain in 2000....he won't win because John McCain 2008 disenfranchised too many people that admired him...he turned into the man he ran against 8 years ago.

(However, ES...the mixed race kid card was below the belt)

The mixed race point is valid.. because he's hiding that point.. It's should be an honor to adopt and raise mixed race or any race of child. As an American voter, I like to see the candidates with their family on occasion.. and it's very telling when the so called 'family values" party never appears with his family.

There is no honor in John McCain, the father.

I disagree with your below the belt assessment.... especially when we are talking about a needless war mongering, torturing, wish for more attacks on us all, human being, like "no honor" McCain. How many children have died because of no honor McCain?

Go to the coffee shops in Jonesboro, ElDorado, Prescott, Texarkana, Fort Smith, Searcy, Fayetteville, Mt. Home, Hot Springs, Murfreesboro, Fouke, Dierks, Mena, Harrisburg, Dumas, etc. etc. any week day morning and asked the retirees what party they are a member of, and they will all say with a smile, Democrat. Then ask them who they will all vote for and they start laughing and say McCain.<<<
Billry

Yea, that's a real show stopper billary. Now go to New York City and visit a few thousand coffee shops and a few thousand restaurants and ask them who they will be voting for. Can you guess? And while you're guessing guess how many State of Arkansas could be put into NYC? Then take a ride to Los Angeles where another 12 million people reside. Both solid Demo votes.

Good post ES.....I would have voted for him in 2000.

Elwood,

Hey Buddy, just sit back and watch it happen. Obama doesn't have a chance whether in NYC or Lonoke, AR. It's funny you discount the Arkansas voter. If old Al Gore had just won Arkansas in 2000, or for that matter Tennesse he would have been our Pres.

I don't know what happened to McCain when he was swiftboated so viciously in 2000, but the man killed himself. Oh, he's still walking around an his lips move, but the McCain I sort of liked in 2000 slowly disappeared. He won't win in Nov and truth be told, he couldn't win in Nov no matter what.

Obama doesn't have a chance whether in NYC or Lonoke, AR. It's funny you discount the Arkansas voter.<<

Well, one should never discount an Arkansas Go-gitter*. They sure do swing elections, for JP that is.

*Ark go-gitter is a fellow who resides just outside of town, has a truck that must be worked on once or twice a week, under the shed, raises 5-6 cows a year, enough profit to feed his 6 coon dogs, works on his truck in the morning shade, then when its running goes to the coffee shop to meet with other election experts. His wife has a full time job at the courthouse. At 5:00 he will Go-gitt'er.
.

Billary is so sure that the good old boys sitting around the coffee tables in Bumfuck Arkansas will decide this election. IMO, they won't.
No Democrat will vote for McCain. DINO's will, racists will, but no Democrat will vote McCain.
Billary, does your church know that McCain's career in politics was financed by his wife's beer company?
To the Blog: I keep tabs on who donates to which candidates, and I do not do business with Republicans, period. I encourage you to do the same, and let them know why you can't give them your business.
Thanks, Max, for a good blog.
