Verizon builds in Tulsa

WW alerts me to a story about Verizon's building of a major operations center in Tulsa to serve Arkansas and Oklahoma. I'm sure this was in the works before the deal to purchase Alltel. And I know nothing about wireless operations. But it sounds like something that might be duplicated in Little Rock -- currently anyway.

That kind of pisses me off. Major jobs being shipped 4-5 hours down the road...

Oh.... only 20 jobs at the new network center in Tulsa. Nothing major.

Nothing major.<<

50,000 sq ft for 20 people. C'mon, switching and routing equipment doesn't need that much space.

I have nothing against call centers, but I'd rather see Verizon invest in some wireline infrastructure here, and bring some badly needed competition to the incumbent monopolies.

Gov. Beebe should ask Verizon to pick five or so underserved rural communities and build-out a FIOS fiber-optic system in those areas. That will keep some good-paying jobs here, and improve our ability to compete in the world.

Southwest Arkansas would be a good place because Verizon is operating some FIOS networks in some suburbs around Dallas.

We need wireline competition because AT&T is doing a absolutely crappy job of serving rural customers here.
