Who let the dogs out?

The entire blogosphere is learning about Helena-West Helena Mayor James Valley (pictured). Today's report on Wonkette:

Arkansas, our greatest state, has produced our nation’s favorite fat politicians (Mike Huckabee and Bill Clinton) while not really being part of Western Civilization. Proof? Mayor James Valley, “of Helena-West Helena,” just shut down his town’s animal shelter and set all the dogs loose in St. Francis National Forest.

There were complaints about the impoverished town’s shitty dog shelter, which was apparently just some fencing around a slab of asphalt in the garbage truck’s parking lot. Instead of constructing a functional animal facility or contracting out to a local dog kennel or, you know, something sane, Mayor Valley bravely decided “the dogs would be better off fending for themselves in the St. Francis National Forest.”

I see they've used your approving cover story to illustrate the piece.

More bad publicity for Arkansas.

Wonkette's commenters are brutal.

I give this one four hooker diamonds:

"Of course, Huckabee's son has shot and eaten half of them by now."

This thread deserves a theme song..

At my name
Bob Dylan - If Dogs Run Free

He thinks the way he's being treated is "un-American"?? Last time I looked, Americans had freedom of speech and a large number of us are against the inhumane treatment of animals (no matter what Farm Bureau says). American elected officials are accountable to their consitutents. So if now his constituents are holding him accountable for his actions and letting their feelings be known, I'd say they are acting exactly how our Founding Fathers intended.

The comment about Huckabee's son was worth the price of admission. Made my day.

Seems like the least we could do is send those dogs to Korea or something.. Perhaps trade them for some shrimp.

Helena-West Helena is a stupid name. Pick one dammit.

As a long time King Biscuit Bluesfest lover (I refuse to call it Arkansas Blues and Heritage festival, another stupid name) Helena has a special place in my heart.

In honor of the 51 people killed by a bomber in peaceful-the-surge-is-working Baghdad today, I think we might as well clean out all the dog pounds in America and start dropping unwanted dogs and cats on Iraq. You're choice, drop them from 30,000 feet and let them splat or give them all tiny parachutes so they land softly. If we're going to spent 1000 bucks a second on this phony war for oil, we might as well use the place to dump our unwanted animals.

Hey, why not clear out death rows across the nation and send those people on a one way trip to Iraq? And forget Yucca Mountain......dump our nuclear waste on Iraq too. Roadside litter! Unclaimed bodies! Used Katrina trailers! All that junk under the bridges in New Orleans! Used needles! Used condoms!

The US has ruined that country, we've shown no respect for human life there. So why not complete the "make them our bitch" process and just use the place as our global landfill? Could we have more shame? No...we reject all shame connected with the invasion and destruction of Iraq.....our hands are clean....Fox News tells us so. Just mark it US DUMP and bring our troops home.

DBI YOU ARE ONE SICK FUDGE BUCKET , YOU AND MOJO SHOULD MAKE THE FIRST DROP.. GO FIRST, SHOW THEM WHERE YOU WANT THE DOGS DROPPED IN IRAQ.. BTW. NAHHH YOU SO FLUFFY YOU DONT NEED A DATGUM PARACHUTE. JUST FLY AWAY. YOU ALL ARE PITIFUL EXCUSES FOR SAMPLES OF MANKIND. LORD HELP US ALL. THOSE DOGS ARE WORTH MORE THAN YOUR SORRY HIDE.

First calling NLR dogtown and now this. I hear a new slogan in the makings. "In Arkansas, dog dumping not just a practice, its an institution. Or maybe, "Arkansas, They Dump Dogs Don't They?"

I'm honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as DBI. He's one of my favorite posters.

Now fudgebucket on the other hand, I'm not so sure......

Forget Iraq, Osama Bin-Forgotten ain't there.

I hear he is in Waziristan on the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Let's leaflet that place, give the civilians a chance to turn his ass in for 30 million cash.

Give them a week and then start dumping all that freakin' nerve gas we got stored at the arsenal so I don't have to see those CSEP evacuation commercials anymore.

And NO, I do not have my "disaster kit" ready yet.

If you believe in intercessory prayer, now would be the time to ask St. Francis to protect the poor animals dumped in the wilderness that carries his name. And pray that Mr. Valley and others who would be so cruel will find the abiding love of St. Francis for nature and all of its creatures.

I'm praying to Pat Robertson that a meteor might hit Helena.

/except Cherry Street, the campgrounds or the concert stage or Oliver's, or the Doughboy.

//prayed to St. Joseph about my headache, went to the medicine chest and....well, you know the rest..

kthxbi

So we ruined Iraq, huh? Funny, I thought Saddam Hussein, along with Uday, Qusay and the Baath Party, with their rape rooms, torture chambers and poison gas, got there first. Silly me.

Dude.
Awww, never mind.
I don't wanna interrupt Fox News.
