Confused old man sez ...
The headline on this NY Times story about John McCain's latest campaign strategy is a knee-slapper, given McCain's serial flip-flops, perpetual confusion and general lack of orientation to the real world.
"McCain tries to define Obama as out of touch."

Comments
Not many people who define themselves as The Symbol (Peace Be Upon Him) or "the change we have all been waiting for" (PBUH), and serially flip-flops on basic tenets like, public financing and gay marriage, and is perpetually confused on whether the surge has worked, usually has a general lack of orientation as well.

McCain, who I would have voted for in '00, has become a 2008 caricature of Lurch - stiff, old, robotic, bitter and his new negative attacks will turn around and bite his ass off. O'Bama will CRUSH him in Nov.; mark it down. He is approaching "Bush-like" status with my wife, who screams TURN THAT OFF when he's on-screen. OOPS John, hoisted on your own petard, and sadly, it couldn't happen to a more deserving, creepy old crank.

But his most egregious dichotomy is his BULLSHIT "supporting the troops" while consistently (for YEARS!) voting against veterans' rights/care - as a veteran I've been paying CLOSE attention to that big lie!
He is the ultimate hypocrite: accusing O'Bama of "doing anything to get elected" while being the King of that!

Obama won't debate McCain without a TelePrompTer, is against furthering oil exploration-even though none of these magical alternatives have amounted to nothing as of today, he is for the increase in fuel-but wishes it had increased more slowly, he is against the Born Alive Infant Act, he is against individual gun rights (well some times he is for some times he is against, depends on the day I suppose) he is against free speech that does not fall into line with political correctness.
Obama had better do a better job of finding out what the vast majorities stand for. He has lived in his multi-million dollar home, jetting around the world in private jets for far too long. He is clueless about the average American man. We can't handle a Bush third term, but I am telling you right now...the issues I mention above, DO matter to most Americans and Obama seems to fall on the wrong side as far as they are concerned. Most men are not going to trade their guns and religions to 15 million illegal immigrants can get health insurance.....that's the way THEY see it anyway.

Like you, Larry, there was a time I bought McSame's stuff; I would have voted for him. But given his penchant for meekly bending over when Monkeyboy decides a backstabbing or screwing is required, the last seven years and the crap that's now flowing from his mouth...no way in hell. And though I'm hardly an Obama fan...ancient, old-school, country-club McSame calling Obama out of touch is LOL funny...and ironic as hell.
I'm very tired of having to choose between the lesser evils. And I hope Obama doesn't assume he can do whatever the hell he wants because no one in their right mind would vote for more of Monkeyboy presidency. I wonder if I'll ever see a Kucinich-like presidential candidate...

Well, DHO, I happened to hear Obama's thoughts on offshore oil-drilling; and they made perfect sense and taught me a thing or two about today's oil realities. Obviously there's the reality of all those thousands of leased, but un-drilled land...then there's the reality that we could spoil our last un-slimed land by allowing drilling and having it go to China or any other country...then there's the reality that giving the oil companies a blank check is what we've been doing forever and see what that's gotten us (just more of the same ole same ole...).
You'd think after the last seven years that most Americans would be leery of buying empty DC one liners as fixes to complex/long-term problems...evidently not...as witness by 'the majority of Americans wanting more drilling...don't really give a damn about the specifics or the relevancy...just drill drill drill. And throw some tax cuts in there, too.
Perhaps we did deserve President Shit for Brains...nah.

Chasv,
It's scary that Obama has a very good chance of winning in November. Obama believes that the American people should be punished for mistreatment of blacks. In fact, he addressed that recently when he said that blacks are entitled to reparations (i.e. the speech about talk isn't enough on reparations, action is needed.) I'm so glad that the US congress is spending its time apologizing for slavery rather than solving real problems.
Obama's energy policy is "no new energy". He is against clean nuclear power. One would think that he would follow the lead of the French and develop a relatively clean source of power. As long as nuclear power plants are off the table, we will be stuck with dirty coal burning plants. If Obama had his wish, we wouldn't be allowed to build any new power plants. I hope all of his supporters are happy with the idea of raising their thermostats to 85 degrees during the summers to save energy.
Obama's ideas sound innocent enough - sort of like compact fluorescent light bulbs and the residual mercury pollution (yes comrade whackos, you need to be using LED lights instead of compact fluorescents). Then there's the mandated use of ethanol from corn, that has the unintended effect of raising food prices to the point where kids are starving in third world countries.
After 2 years of Obama, it will be time for a conservative take over of congress. Unfortunately people have short memories and forget about the failures of liberalism to offer real solutions to problems. I think W. is actually hoping for an Obama win. After 2 years of Obama, W. will be thought of as a great President in comparison.

Well, severus, I didn't know that Obama supported that reparations crap...grrr. If we're going to go back and pay people for past abuses...start with women. Heck, black men could vote long before women could. It's a bad idea that will only further divide liberals/country. Good god, Obama, please stop it.
"...After 2 years of Obama, W. will be thought of as a great President in comparison."--severus
Now that's LOL funny. It'll take a lot more than a 'crappy' Democratic president to change Dubya's warmongering, Constitution-stomping crap into something palatable...much less great.

Zelda, you brought up a point that had escaped me.
Any agreement to let RECORD PROFITS EXXON or others drill offshore must contain a proviso that all the oil they get must be sold in the United States for United States consumption.
I think Obama could cause the Repugnicans to wet their pants by saying he's for offshore drilling by American companies for American consumption. That would force the hand of idiots like McShame by showing exactly how long it will take for American oil companies to find the oil, get it to the surface without violating environmental standards, building refineries to make gasoline out of that oil, then getting it into American gas tanks.
I'm coming around to allowing the blowhard Repugs to drill for the oil because the sooner we use it all up the sooner we'll be forced to buy alternate-fuel cars.

"...After 2 years of Obama, W. will be thought of as a great President in comparison."
Well, when Obama is occupying two more countries, has driven gasoline to $8 a gallon and doubled oil company profits, has alienated the remaining handful of countries who liked Bush, has a demonstrated track record of using the Justice department for political gain, has 3 or 4 close friends convicted, indicted or just plain guilty, and has destroyed two more rights on the Bill of Rights, then get back to us. Because at that point he will be tied with Bush, and then it's a horserace.
I think you just jumped the shark, going beyond troll and becoming a caricature of yourself.

not trying to be argumentative, but "I wonder if I'll ever see a Kucinich-like presidential candidate...". Of course you remember that Kucinich actually was a presidential candidate this year.
If your plaint is 'will we ever see a viable Kucinich-like', then I'd have to answer - no. There are too many entrenched interests for a progressive to ever be taken seriously.

Yes, 70%, I meant 'viable'...just didn't say it that way. (I've gotten very sloppy on blogs...sorry) And I do understand that Kucinich is not so-called mainstream. But I'd argue that he is every bit as mainstream as Dubya and his gang. He's just more honest about his leanings, while Dubya's actual governing philosophies are light-years removed from his campaign rhetoric...i.e., 'no-nation building.'

Comrades,
I'm debating whether to send my $5 donation in to the Hillary Clinton campaign for a chance to have a dinner date with Senator Clinton.
***********************
Hillary Clinton left the primary race roughly $20 million in the hole. She's been looking to Barack Obama, t-shirt sales, and office furniture sales (among other measures) to retire her debt. Today, she announced a new scheme: a dinner contest. Supporters who donate at least $5 have the chance to dine with the Senator. Here is Clinton's email, blasted out Tuesday morning:
Summer is a time for simple pleasures: family vacations, baseball games, and dinner out under the stars. At least it is if you aren't running for president!
It sure is nice having a little more time on my hands, and I'd love to spend some of it with you. Would you like to join me for dinner?
During the campaign, I had the chance a few times to grab meals with supporters, but they were always rushed thanks to the frenetic pace of the campaign. This is my first chance to sit down and spend some real one-on-one time with you. If you enter today, we could be having dinner together soon!
Join me for dinner. Make a $5 contribution today.
My staff has been calling this my "retirement dinner" -- not because I'm retiring, of course, but because we're working on retiring the debt we owe to small vendors all over the country. Everyone who acts today will have the chance to join me -- along with a guest -- for a dinner to talk about whatever you'd like.
Let's go to dinner! Every little bit helps, and even $5 can make a real difference. Contribute $5 now, and you and I could be enjoying a summer dinner together soon!

Reparations are TOTAL bullshit, and we've been "repairing" the Native Americans since we killed off most of them - ONE of the many "inconvenient truths" that most of the conservative persuasion like to skip over. We wouldn't HAVE a country if we hadn't been genocidal murderers, and now we're in the sick business of "exporting" that. Genocide wasn't bad enough, we then had to finish the job by destroying their culture. THE biggest problem with most Americans (reference "...that's the way THEY see it anyway." post by DHO, which is sadly accurate) is they operate on low-information/intelligence/critical thinking and are focused on X-Boxes, SUV's (how's THAT working out?) and Britney. AND they let the pols get away with precisely what zelda pointed out about Bush Lite - promise A, deliver B!!
I'm holding out hope one last time that THIS TIME they won't be hoodwinked by Republican bait-and-switch tactics (or Swift-boating) and realize that McThuselah is TOO OLD - talk about out of touch - did you see the clip/ad with him in a super market?? AND just for the record I am not now, nor have NEVER been a Democrat. Our system is FKed, in that EVERYTHING is reduced to a binary "Sophie's Choice." The world does not operate on binary options, but our outmoded 2-party system and "winner take all" governance just does not work in a complex world. "It's the SYSTEM, stupid!"
There are established, PROVEN protocols for problem resolution, but our government (at any level save local [sometimes]) doesn't use any of them. The FIRST step is always the same: define, then agree on the problem. We can't even do that, because ideology and $$$ are the filter thru which everything is sent. IF we cannot agree on the definition of a problem, solving it is not binary, it's random and arbitrary - not to mention unlikely/impossible to produce an EFFECTIVE result. THEN we have the law of unintended consequences - see Ethanol, invading Iraq, deregulating financial markets, etc. ad infinitum, although SOME folks see the consequences in advance, they are always drummed out by ideology/$$$.
THAT is the "change" we need, and we'll never get it so long as corporations have more power to legislate than the consideration of "the common good." McCain is passe; there is a SLIVER of hope w/O'Bama, and he's not mean, cranky and TOO OLD!!

I'll take the bait, Sev, what is this "clean nuclear power" of which you speak? Are you willing to store spent fuel rods in your basement?
If this country invested in nuke power like it invests in our home away from home in Baghdad, we wouldn't see a watt of power for over a decade. When it becomes more tangibly apparent that global petroleum supplies are on the downward slope of the bell curve, I fully expect that the nuclear power option will be utilized ASAP. Worldwide, nukes have been responsible for a tiny fraction of the environmental damage fossil fuels have brought us, but the questions remain: (1) Where do you roll the dice on nuke locations-- seismic zones, anyone? (2) in a world with desperate nutball religious zealots hell bent on destroying us all, how do we ensure that these targets are never, ever compromised? (3) and the biggie: the waste is deadly poison. I'm betting that your basement is off limits. Mine too. Amassing radioactive waste is just one more way we can pass the cost of our extravagant lifestyles on to our kids.
Thee are many ways to foul our collective nest, nuclear power included. It's very unlikely we'll go another decade without seeing much more serious fallout from our century-long petroleum orgy. We still laugh at Jimmy Carter when he told us to wear a sweater- he was a laughing stock for being realistic. Neither Obama nor McCain want to tell us things we don't want to hear- they have too much to lose, most of all the election. Thermostat at 85 in July? Sounds rough, but we take far too much for granted. I'm guilty too. I'm just very, very concerned that we ain't seen nuthin' yet, and I've yet to hear a decent solution from a politician of any stripe.

Why do you hate America, Larry? According to Sean, Rush, blah blah...every time a liberal denigrates 'Amurica' by pointing out historical Truths...by pointing out our warts as well as our gloriousness, it's proof we hate our country. Well, further proof...I first learned we hated 'America' when they said that not blindly following Chief Idiot into a based-on-lies, immoral war meant such nonsense...and that I was a traitor, too.

Reparations have already been paid with interest. 600,000 Americans paid with their lives to settle the issue of slavery. I don't think we owe blacks one cent.

July 31, 2008 07:22 PM
Now, strangelove, here's one where you and I can absolutely agree:
"Liberals who support obmam yo mama make fun of McCain's disabilities that were a result of his imprisonment and torture by gooks. I have a problem with that. "
Well, except for your put-down "obamam you mama"; I certainly don't endorse that kind of snide remark.
But there is no excuse for anyone's making fun of anyone's disabilities--any more than there is an excuse for anyone making fun of anyone's name!
So let's agree that it is unforgiveable to make fun of McCain's disabilities and that they are a result of his torture.
But now let's discuss whether those same disabilities, taking an increasing toll upon his physical and mental--and emotional--health as he ages, are, or could be, hindrances to his effective service as president of the United States.
If he is in a state of mental confusion, is he stable enough to be entrusted with presidential responsibilities?
If he is in a state of emotional instability, is he stable enough to be entrusted with presidential responsibilities?
If he is in a state of physical deterioration, is he strong enough, does he have stamina enough, to be entrusted with presidential responsibilities?
These certainly are not laughing matters. And they certainly are not occasions for ridicule. But they are legitimate questions to raise concerning the fitness of a person to serve as chief executive of the United States of America.
