Cops and robbers
Don't know about you, but I'm getting far too many neighborhood group e-mails about smash-and-dash burglaries (even in homes with security systems) and worse.
This morning, for example, I got a note about a recent break-in in Briarwood in which a burglar nearly clubbed a dog to death with a shovel. And then I got an LRPD report of a home intrusion in the 5800 block of Lee about 2 a.m. today. The occupant awoke to find a man standing by his bed with a semi-automatic handgun. He wanted money. Told there was none, he searched the house fruitlessly then left, but not before pulling out a window unit air conditioner.
UPDATE: On the Briarwood burglary. It was at the home of Graham Rich, relatively new CEO of Central Arkansas Water, and occurred while he and his wife were away last Monday night. He says that the injury report on his 14-year-old rescue dog, Jessie, was exaggerated. He believes she was clubbed with a shovel found in the yard because she emerged limping from beneath a storage shed, a place she normally never goes, when the Riches returned home. "She's going to be OK," Rich said of the chow mix, which will bark at unfamiliar arrivals, but doesn't bite. The burglar smashed the front door and stole a laptop, but otherwise left the house undisturbed.
Rich said he'd become too complacent about his good neighborhood, where neighbors tend to look out for each other and life has been peaceful since he arrived. He'd left the front storm door unlocked and left no lights on when he left. "People just need to be a little smarter than what we were," he said. He's buying a timer to turn lights on and off and will be securing locks in the future.

Haven't you heard, Max? Per the Mayor's office, crime is down in Little Rock. Not to worry!

Let me pull a phrase from 1992:
"It is the economy, stupid!"
Why don't everyone send their insurance premiums to GWB since he caused all this mess!

Is it the number of e-mails or the number of home invasions that is bothering you?
ARK. BLOG: Thank you. Care with words needed. It is, of course, the number of invasions -- as represented by the number of e-mails -- that bothers me. I appreciate ALL the e-mails I get.

Can we build a cage around Little Rock to protect the rest of the state?

My son and his wife live in Hillcrest and also own a number of rental properties in that area of town. Since he's not a blogger, I sent him your "Cops and robbers" post. His reply follows:
"Yes, last week there was a break-in across the street from us. In broad daylight, and on a busy street. these guys are bold. Also, I just had all of my copper plumbing stolen from a rent house in Stift Station. It's going to cost $1,600 to replumb the house. They also dismantled and ripped apart the air unit for about $20 worth of copper. They ruined the whole unit. will cost about $2,500 to replace. Insurance doesn't cover any of it. This is the 6th time in the last year I have had this happen to one of my properties. The crime around here is really disgusting."

It isn't just the economy. The career criminals KNOW that short of killing someone, they won't spend more than a few hours in jail IF they are caught. These are crimes of opportunity. Lock your doors, secure your possessions and leave the lights on. It's a downright shame that our society has come to this, and I only expect it to get worse.

This email came out to the Leawood Crime Watch list over the weekend; as you can see lights and security systems are not deterring some of the low lifes now.
Neighbors:
After months of very, very few problems, one of our neighbors on Linda Lane was the victim of a burglary at approx. 12:30 am this morning. While this is always troubling, this burglary was particularly scary because the family was at home asleep and the thieves disabled the security light and attempted to turn off power to the home. Fortunately, the family's alarm did go off, but the thieves were so bold that they still managed to grab some personal property before fleeing from the home. The family is safe but scared. I'm sure the alarm protected their physical safety.
I don't want us living in fear, but we all need to be very aware and cautious. This family was doing several things "the right way" and they were still victimized. These thieves are bold. Please be careful and report any problems to 911 or 311 and then to me. Please do not hesitate to call me at any time of the day or night. I'm in the book.

Dogs in the house folks, keep your dogs in the house....
Is crime like this worse then in other cities of the same size?
And is no one getting robbed in NLR or Conway or Bryant?

Where is Tommy Robinson when you need him! Maybe there should be a law that if a car has 22" wheels and is painted like a skittle then it is pulled over and searched.

Before long some resident or homeowner is going to blow away a couple of these midnight raiders, like the old geezer neighbor in Texas did last year. That ought to slow it down for a while. Latest score: Old Geezer in Texas 2, Neighborhood Burglars 0.

I have a loud ass dog that I hope will give me enough warning to reach my big ass pistol.
No one should be in my house but me, my wife and the loud ass dog. Anyone else gets capped.
The right to keep and bear arms is one of my favorite constitutional rights. The right to dial 911 and get hung up on is not high on my list.

Unfortunately, in my 'midtowne' neighborhood, in the vicinity of the others mentioned here, dogs haven't protected at least 2 homes from being burgularized! I'm talking BIG A** dogs- in one home were a German Shepherd and Rottweiler-neither are actually mean, but sure sound like it and certainly would keep *some* folks out...The other home had a Newfoundland-again, not mean but big...Anyway, in the same Saturday night, before 10PM, in nice weather with folks out and about and windows open in many homes, the jerks shoo'd the dogs out of the house, and took quick to grab/easy to pawn things. This incident was a HUGE eye-opener to me since I always thought a dog was helpful with safety. As said before, the criminals in LR know full-well, IF they are caught, the turnaround time is approx. 20 minutes till they can be at their next "job". Did I mention, everyone in our house are hunters but me, however, I can shoot as well as the rest of them. It takes getting scared mad (starts with scared to death), to know if you could/would defend your self, family, and home. Been there (scared, that is) and HELL YEAH I'd happily shoot you to protect me, my kidz, and my home.

Young people are smart these days: join the military and learn a trade; the prisons are full of those w/ mandatory drug sentences; steal from the middle class like everyone else does. What did you think was going to happen?
