De-Huckabeeization

This week's Arkansas Times is now on the web. The new material includes an Insider item about the stripping of Janet Huckabee's name from the Grand Hall at the Governor's Mansion. (Photo is from a state event there. Good thing the Hucks didn't allow booze, what with all those swords swinging around.)

Officials tell us the Mansion Commission voted recently not to have any names on rooms at the mansion and that the sign that existed wasn't aesthetically pleasing. Officials also said they can find no record that the Mansion Commission officially voted to rename the hall after the former first lady, who helped raise money to build it.

Well. I know the Commission held a news conference to announce the naming because I was there. And a commission member was quoted then as saying that it was done by formal motion. There may be further chapters in this story.

Not to worry about the Huckabees being forgotten, of course. A plaque installed by the Huckabee administration outside the hall still remains in place to honor Janet Huckabee. The Beebes have graciously installed a plaque honoring the donors who made the construction possible. The Huckabees had promised such a thing, but the only plaque they got around to installing was the one about Janet.

For old times sake: A look back at a fine Arkansas Leader editorial that rounded up all the things the Huckabees had named for themselves -- and a few of the tributes they accepted, or wanted to accept, along the way.

There'll always be the lakes, nature centers, etc.

There should have been a nameplate in the ASP airplane that said HuckMobile '08

Has there ever been a plaque that couldn't be removed? Any paintings, plaques of Orval
remain?

I am suprised that Mike or Ginger have ever been sober enought to read it. During the 2006 campaign the campaign staff kept a case of vodka in the tahoe. Mike would burn through a bottle on a good day.

There is an easy way to determine whether the Commission took formal action, Max: FOIA the minutes. Have you done this? Has Leslie?

There is an easy way to determine whether the Commission took formal action: check the minutes. Have you FOIA'd them yet? If not, why not?

Formal motion or not, the Grand Hall at the Governor's Mansion should never have carried Janet Huckabee's name. Naming the room for Huckabee was almost as silly as the idea some years ago to rename Little Rock National Airport the Hillary Rodham Clinton Airport. Thank God there was sufficient protest to put a halt to the Hillary Rodham Clinton Airport nonsense. And too bad that changing the name from East Markham to President Clinton Ave. couldn't have been prevented. Will we ever cease treating public "servants" (what a laugh, that term) and their spouses as royalty?

Max, are Velveeta and Ro-Tel listed as corporate contributors?

Durangokid - Taking the Huckabee's name off everything they touched while staying at the Mansion is good (especially large interstate roadsigns in Fort Smith - please let that be next). Keeping LIT Little Rock National Airport, not HRC Airport, was a good thing. I argued here once naming a arena after a university president/chancellor who wasn't dead (and still in charge) was a bad idea (to which others came running to his defense, but I still think I'm right on that one, but he's dead and that's the end of that).

On Pres Clinton Ave. -- a good swath of streets in LR are named after presidents, starting at Washington and stopping at Coolidge (skipping it seems via looking at Google Maps Lincoln and Wilson (there was a Johnson Street near Park, and Roosevelt Road for anyone who goes to look and sees those missing), you can guess why if you think that these streets probably were installed when race tensions were high, and Lincoln didn't have a good record with the establishment crowd during that time). I don't see the problem in naming a few blocks of a street going to a presidential library after said president, even if it was to be one I didn't like. It's put some money in the economy here, that's for sure, and brought a bit of culture to town, something we always can use, and it's a president - a few blocks never hurt.

I love it.

Arkansas's version of Marie Antoinnette and Louis XVI.

How about a big sign at the Boy Scout enclave at Camp Pioneer in Polk County to honor their son and the dog who gave up his life for the good of pleasure?

People, think this Huckabee sign thing through. Scientists working for a consortium made up of the "Flat Earth Society", "Global Cooling Commission" and "Surround Lake Maumelle with High Rises Civil Society" have determined that if all the signs with Mike and Miss Janet's names on them were to be removed from the entire state, Arkansas would up and float away from the rest of the earth. That is a well known fact. I can send you the single paragraph scientific explanation officially approved by the White House Office of Science and Technology if you don't believe me.

So, much as I agree the Hucks were maybe just a might self-centered, it would only be at great risk to ourselves and our children to 'deHuck' the entire state without taking offsetting measures.

The Consortium did come up with an alternate plan to import counterweights, aka shale drilling rigs, to compensate for the lost weight of all those Huckabee self-promotion signs. So there is that.

Well, the naming of public places certainly did not originate with the Huckabees or during the Huckabee years by any means. There isn't a puddle of water larger than a bathtub in this not named in honor of some former AGFC commissioner or someone who managed, usually legislatively, to funnel money in their direction. Hell, in Dardanelle, there is the Mike Cornwell AGFC Boat Ramp on the Arkansas River for goodness sake. Stanley Russ and Tom Courtway share naming rights to another similar area on the north side of Lake Conway. Lloyd George and the late Frank Wilhems have their names adorning wings of the Lodge at Mt. Magazine, and on and on and on.

Folks do things and folks who benefit oft times want to do something to honor them. Big deal. Yes, the Huckabee names do adorn a couple nature centers and a lake and until recently, the Grand Hall. This was done by friends of theirs out of appreciation for things they helped accomplish. No different at all from the literally hundreds of other locations in this state named for "still live and still" individuals.

For all the things wrong in this world, the name plate over a doorway or on the sign at the entrance to a facility just doesn't rate too awfully high...

I hope they saved them letters. Sometimes with a little Super Glue or Gorilla Glue you can recycle those

I'm happy to see that Miss Jethrine had herself a ball gown made out of some of Miss Ellen's portieres......You can keep them curtains, honey. If we find anything left over that ugly, I'm sure the current staff will know to put it in a HAZMAT bag or whatever and have it picked up.

Did we really need a military honor guard or whatever that is for this little shindig? since they didn't serve or allow booze, as someone else has pointed out, surely guards could have been posted at all the doors of the mansion to prevent people from leaving the mansion after stopping by to say howdy for just a few minutes (and have a heapin' helpin' of their hospitality, too). No sir you and the Mrs. cannot leave until you've been here at least four hours and acted happy about it too. MIzrez Duggar prolly either conceived or birthed a child at this event, so the general public could surely stay around longer and try not to die of boredom. I dont think we really needed swords to keep the huckster's guests from escaping.........

It's more than a little galling when people we pay take something we own and name it after one of them. Well...2 can play that game! From now on jazzy's va-jayjay will be known as the DeathbyInches Memorial Hot Springs Basin Va-jayjay. Use it well jazzy, yer bzzzzt is now a public attraction.

I have not visited the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Wildlife Center and though I doubt they've missed me, I have no plans to visit any jointed named after a Fox News commentator's wife. To be fair I also will not be visiting the Lynn & Ilana Blitzer New York Thousand Finger Lakes Boat Dock & Marina....so screw the CNN commentators too. If I'm going to start that shit I'd be starting with the Betsy Maxwell Cronkite St. Joseph Missouri Memorial Human Society Animal Crematorium & Landfill. See what a goddamn ugly thread that is to ever pull?

It would make more sense to start naming Arkansas buildings, lakes, tunnels and what have you after other Arkansas hucksters like John Romulus Brinkley who made a fortune early in the 20th century by injecting grounded up goat glands into old men not willing to wait 70 years for the inventing of Viagra. Like Huckabee John Romulus Brinkley got rich playing off the ignorance of the people of Arkansas, Kansas and Texas. Why not change the name of the anus of NWA, the Bobby Hopper Tunnel to the John Romulus Brinkley Tunnel. I doubt he stole more money from Arkansans than Fox News commentator Mike Huckabee and his wife Janet.
