Fear of flying

Today's aviation blood curdler: a hole the size of a small car blown in the side of a Qantas 747, which then makes a successful landing without injury to passengers. What caused it? Interesting question.

Comments

Early bet is on metal fatigue, more than likely at a seam. At 29,000 feet, you're flying a pressurized can through a very light atmosphere - cracks and stresses will cause the plane to 'explode'. See Aloha Airlines Flight 243 (linked at blue anoncow below) for a similar failure on a narrow body Boeing that had a slightly less positive outcome for some involved.
