Journalists' search for truth
Remember the item the other day about how Ron Fournier, once a reporter in Little Rock, was reshaping the way The Associated Press covers news in the important job of Washington bureau chief?
John Brummett comments today. He approves of Fournier's focus on, not just facts, but "truth." There will be problems drawing lines in deciding where truth-telling about, say, a politician's pronouncements could become a subjective game. He seems to think the problem will be bigger among "local yokel" reporters as opposed to the national big feet. Here, I don't wholly subscribe. There have been some enormous journalistic malpractices by the big shots, including AP writers, over the years. Sometimes, I think, the journalism bigshots --- yearning for the TV gigs, speaking fees and all the rest that come with journalism celebrity -- are more easily persuaded about warped versions of truth from the high-dollar people who pack Washington to spin such yarns.

Let's not anoint Mr. Fournier a saint just because he's a homeboy. His reporting of the Bush administration lacks any real questioning of their ethics and his frequent analysis reporting often gets into opinion.
In fact, Fournier's "breezy" and buttboy relationship [http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003827432] with Karl Rove is enough to make one sick at the stomach.
If Fournier wants to get the scoop on something other than the Clintons and the Bush-Cheney spin, he should start asking his friend Heir Rove to come clean about the criminal activity in the White House, and start reporting on the "who-what-when-where and why" these treasonous crooks should be headed for the gallows.
Fournier, at best, is simply another Washington, D.C., elitist who needs to get off the social circuit and get his nose out of his sources' a$$.

I agree. We don't need more spin about the spin. The way to refute BS is with facts. It is called research, knowing your subject, and knowing your audience well enough to know how to present the facts and how to back them up.
Political journalism has become a style show. They BS us and the media gives them a score on how well they did. It is all just inside baseball because no one will do the work.

Hasn't Founier's idea been in widespread practice? It's called FOX News Network. Then it becomes a matter of being a Chinese philosopher dreaming he is a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming he is a Chinese philosopher.
"Facts are difficult things."

Why do so many "gate keepers" aka journalists keep going to the serial liars in search of facts? Then the press turns around a repeats the liars words, ad nauseam, as if a serial liar has any concept of truth or facts..
Fournier and far to many other so called journalists.. are part of the problem. Brummett goes the route of Broder today, making nice with those who knowingly and willingly sold their soul to the devil. This ain't rocket science.. it's trying to put lipstick on decidedly Goebbelian pig.

It's not as simple as this and that's why young reporters right out of the box usually get it wrong. It's the combination of facts, research on all the facts surrounding a story, a personal lack of an agenda while writing the story, sterling ethics, and enough sense to see the big picture. I know, I know...that's just too damn complicated for most in the 2008 media world. But that's the way the old guys used to do it back when you could trust newspapers. I'm not real sure one could ever trust the TV cause they're required to look pretty first and foremost and move too fast to get the big picture.
Wifey and I figured out a long time ago if you want the truth, you better be willing to invest the time in checking out numerous sources before you can be sure you're getting the truth. When something big pops these days, I don't go check the hard left news, and I absolutely never check in on the hard right. I go look for media without a dog in the hunt. Lots of times if you want the truth about America, you'll find it on the BBC. When no one in America reported that Bush's limo was pelted with eggs during the first inaugural parade....there it was on the BBC, video clips and all.
I like it when the news fits my own personal views. Every family values Republican caught porking someone he shouldn't is like a little gift to me. I enjoy the pain of hypocrites. But more than that I enjoy the truth, cause you got nothing if your believing in a lie and you look like a fool when you go around spreading it. Let me make this plain.....if you're telling people that the Clinton's killed Vince Foster, you look stupid. Above all things I hate to look stupid by repeating some bullshit someone smarter than me has planted in my pea brain.
If everyone researched the issues that are important to them, Fox News would go out of business. You can find the truth, but like all things, it takes work. Be willing to work and you'll never be suckered again....unless they're blonde and have big boobs...but that's for another thread.
