Paying for the Bush library

From the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Do you want Vice President Dick Cheney’s undivided attention for an hour? Stephen P. Payne, a Texas-based lobbyist, has some advice about how to grease the wheels for such a meeting: Make a six-figure donation to the George W. Bush Presidential Center, a library and museum complex that is scheduled to be built at Southern Methodist University.

When Mr. Payne made that suggestion in a London restaurant last week, he thought he was talking to an agent of the exiled president of Kyrgyzstan. He was actually speaking with undercover representatives of The Times of London, which has posted a video of the encounter.

“I think that the [exiled president’s] family, children, whatever, should probably look at making a contribution to the Bush library,” Mr. Payne says in the video. “How big, I don’t know. It would be like maybe a couple of hundred thousand dollars, something like that. Not a huge amount, but enough to show that they’re serious.”

Mr. Payne, a member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Secure Borders and Open Doors Advisory Committee, runs a Houston lobbying firm called Worldwide Strategic Partners. He has no affiliation with the George W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation or with Southern Methodist. In a statement released on Sunday, Mr. Payne argues that he was entrapped by the Times agents’ “bizarre leading questions and strange hypothetical comments.”

Methodists everywhere should be gnashing their teeth over the trustees of their frat-boy university allowing this rat-punk to put his Museum of Revisionary History on their campus.

Well, Claude, as a Methodist, I'm not thrilled about the whole thing, but it's a far cry from gnashing teeth. Every President is entitled to a library, including our worst one ever. In fact, I think Worst Ever should get a library in every state...as a sobering reminder of what happens when you give one man too much power and trust. As for him being a Methodist, I have often cited how his politics don't quite match with Methodist teachings and have even used that argument to counter the claim that he was even truly Christian in the first place. Regardless, let him build his library, and let it be built in Texas. When I'm President, we're giving Texas back to Mexico anyway. And then we'll construct the fence....and shoot anyone attempting to climb over it. Seems like a fair border policy to me...they get Texas, we get rid of a state full of inbred rednecks. That's win-win.

Actually I think it is still up to a vote at the 2008 South Central Jurisdictional Conference is scheduled for July 16-19 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, based upon Bush's avocacy of torture as a legitimate method of questioning.

If the conference endorses the library, they will be rebuking the conscience of the petitioners and the 2008 Quadrennial General Conference that voted 844 to 20 against leasing land, selling land, or otherwise participating in or supporting the Bush Library.

The results will be an interesting illumination of the attitudes of the Church leadership.

Methodism is in a bit of a decline. This should only hasen it slightly. Not near as much as W has done for America.

But, you can't blame America on W any more than you can blame W on America. We are fat and happy and likely to remain that way. We just don't care. Except maybe for the poor kids being sent to Iraq and they don't figure it out until its too late.

I'm starting feel more and more like Michelle Obama. I can't remember the last time I was proud of America. What passes for reality today has a certain smell.

Selling "access" in return for library donations is more acceptable than selling pardons and diplomatic passports.

Yep, yep, brothers and sisters, I've seen the light today....start tearing down all those
church buildings, don't need them....Jesus lives in jails, yes, jails and prisons in all 50 states,
and libriaries. Hubby just told me that a young man we know, in jail for DUI, had found Jesus
(I said, *they all find Jesus in jail*) but, what helped him the most was reading about GWB
and his turn from alcohol to God.
SOMEONE SAY AMEN
So, sunday morning, in our fine designer suits, Italian shoes and bags, head out for the
pokey for service for that is where Jesus truly lives.
AMEN AND AMEN

Here's another Methodist who's not happy about the Bush library that'll be built on the SMU campus if the SCJC vote later this week is one of approval. Lots of alumni and many faculty members are not enthralled with the idea, and that's an understatement to put it mildly. Mostly, they are concerned about the possible backlash of something as partisan as a presidential library being on the campus. I can understand their concern. The only thing worse than a Bush library on the SMU campus would be if a branch of it ever landed on the Hendrix campus. THAT ain't gonna happen, though; and that's the one thing in this life about which I'm certain.

Another cog in the broken system. The public should fund a modest liberry. period. We don't need to leave this loophole wide open for two main reasons.. It's a place to auction of the countries soul for exiting presidents in a how big is your liberry, contest.
ANd the damn things are nothing but a glorified storage unit for documents that should be available for public scrutiny. We paid for them! We shouldn't have them hidden in secret.

Until that time, I do think all contributions and the sources should be public. And no fund raising should happen until the president is out of office.

Here's hoping the State department fires that fellow.. and the Methodists see the light and reject the Bush liberry.

As another Methodist, I'll point out that backsliding is an important part of our doctrine. Unlike the Baptists, who believe "once saved, always saved," Methodists believe that you can find God but then turn away from Him.

That being said, G.W. Bush is a backsliding Methodist and it shames the denomination to have his liebrary at SMU.

I can't be the only Murrican who laughs so hard every time I hear the oxymoron, "Bush library" that I can't type.

I imagine a lovely, well-designed ediface housing one book, "My Pet Goat," and millions of redacted documents which (because the pages are blacked out) are worthless for historians and researchists. Of course, all this administration's emails have mysteriously gone missing, so . . . .

That's the bright picture.

The dark picture is that by the time the Bush library is being built there will have been another terrorist attack and November's elections will have been suspended and martial law declared in Murrica. So . . . .

Speaking of Bush Library design, the Chronicle of Higher Education sponsored a 'back of the envelope' design contest, and some of the entries are hilarious.

My favorite entry was the 'Hole in the Ground,' and click the blue link to view the entries.

Boy, you people are pathetic. I am not a big Bush Fan, but he is OUR PRESIDENT!!!!

Can't you people show some respect for the the Office, even if you don't like the man in the Office?

I guess not, you are so eaten up with hate over him beating your beloved Al Gore and John Kerry you can't say anything mature....grow up folks!

Catfish, maybe if he had shown any respect for the office, the Constitution or this country, we might have. But that ship has sailed. A president is a man, not a king; a leader, not a ruler. He is a corrupted, failed president and as long as we still have my favorite right of the Bill of Rights (some are missing now), I will say so.

Catfish,
That sorry, torture-loving, war-monger who lies, smirks, acts like a fool, lies, ruined this country, lies, occupies an innocent country, lies, ruined the economy, lies.....Is that who you think I should respect? No way, Catfish, Bush is the sorriest excuse for a human being I can imagine, and he is the worst president we have ever had. Respect him? Hell, no.
Have I mentioned that he is a liar?

mag i am wondering who has to bear the expenses of replacing the used crayons each time george visits? will they display his pictures? maybe there will be a great big refrigirator door to put them up on. the clinton library sells refrigrator magnets i believe. maybe they can be used to hold the pictures up on the fridge door.

Selling "access" in return for library donations is more acceptable than selling pardons and diplomatic passports.<<

When it happens, and you know it will, NO ONE will know about it. It will be like a midnite secret Patriot
Act search in your neighbor's home who was mistaken for al-Queda member. If you happen to see it they will be on your like a thousand threatening ghosts you will not identify for fear of annihilation.

Catfish, you are indeed laughable. If you think what we're offerring up is bad go back 120-130 years when patriots really insulted the president. I recall the most vulgar and distasteful jokes told about LBJ.
Even in my wild, drunken early 20s I thought they were bad. Who told them? GIs.

We have no sacred cows. They were buried long ago.

" him beating your beloved Al Gore "

There you go again, catfish. Revising history. Gore was the choice of the people. Gore got 540,00 more votes than W. And you think Bush beat Gore? Hahahahahahahhahahaha.

The next thing we will hear from your lips is that Reagan and Bush are fiscal conservatives and the US Supreme Court if occupied by left wing justices.

"Can't you people show some respect for the the Office, even if you don't like the man in the Office?" - Catfish

Sorry, Cat. Your "logic" escapes me. I don't know George W. personally so I don't know if I'd "respect" him or not. I DO know his actions and what he's done.

No, I don't respect his actions or his administration at all.

Look at America's global position, our economy, our wars, our furtherance of terrorism in the Middle East over our bloody determination to control oil, oh . . . on and on . . . pre- and post- George W. Bush.

In no way am I comparing W to Hitler. Yet by your "logic," I should respect "the man in the Office" no matter how he conducts that office. "Adolph's Chancellor of Germany! Respect the office, respect HIM!"

Give me a break, Catfish.

George W. Bush has failed at everything he ever tried. From oil companies to baseball teams to his tragic occupancy of the Oval Office.

Thinking before speaking is always a plus here on the blog, Cat.

I -- and most if not ALL Americans -- respect the office of the President of the United States AND our Constitution.

Too bad G.W. Bush doesn't.

Catfish in the house! I like the office of President...it's cool....it's kinda round, it's got a great desk and groovy pictures on the walls. The telephone is out of this world, you can dial up anyone for free! Nah.....I like the office of President very very much!

But I do hate that lying bastard that's in it. He's stupid, he's crooked, he tortures people, he kills people, he and his dad Cheney have turned the whole White House into one big cash register. Arkansas blogger is trying to trade evils. I really don't want to talk about which is worse...anally raping a child or vaginally raping a child, assuming the child in question is female and has a vag.

I hate it when anyone turns my White House into a whore house...sucking up cash for favors. But ya know, Clinton ain't in the White House, Gore neither, nor Kerry. But the twin douche bags Cheney-Bush ARE in the White House and if they could figure out a way to steal all the money and oil on earth without torturing and killing people, I might ignore their ignorant asses.

Now...I'm not Methodist, and it's kinda funny, but I don't think I've ever slept with one either. I always figured they were just a more dignified version of Baptist, we dunk...they sprinkle...like little sissies.....but damn me if I know what they did so bad to get hung with the FK'ing Bush Library? That's like winning a new Buick.....shoved up yer ass. Every group on down to stamp collectors would love to get a Presidential Library.....but gag me.....the GWB Library. I'd rather FK Linda Tripp than go to Texas and if I am ever forced to go, SMU will be the very last place I'll ever visit.

I've been to the Truman, Eisenhower and Johnson Presidential Museums....liked them a whole bunch. Next time hugh mann is out of town, I'm hoping to slip off and check out the Clinton Library and a few other sites I haven't seen in LR. But visiting a museum dedicated to a war criminal....huh uh....ain't gonna do it. They couldn't pay me.

A WWII fighter pilot told me he got to go on the big 1946 Thank You America World Tour after the war and the ship visited about every port with a light on in the harbor. He said the women crawled all over him....so much he was 45 before he got married the first time!

But I digress....oh yes....he said the strangest place he ever visited in his life was somewhere in the Netherlands, Norway or something. In his dress whites he and his group were taken with great fanfare to a ancient museum. He said it took him about 10 minutes to understand what he was even looking at. Turns out it was a museum totally dedicated to penises. Weren't nothing but penises from top to bottom, whales, foxes, tigers, elephants....you name it..if it had a hang-y thing, they had one of em in that museum.

So in conclusion.....if I ever want to go to a museum devoted to a big dick....I'll call the old man and find out exactly where the old penis museum is and I'll find my big coat and go see em. But I'm staying out of Texas and the only way I want to see George W. Bush is behind steel bars.

PS All you Methodists....depending on the upcoming vote....might be a real good time to find a new brand of religion. Them Episcopalians always seemed real nice to me...they got beer at their church parties, so they gots to be good people. And America has never had an Episcopalian President who was a war criminal, so they got a good record to boot. Pox on Bush...Pox on Cheney.

It's our office.

THANK GOD CATFISH. DIDNT THINK THERE WAS HARDLY ANYONE OF US OUT THERE THAT FELT THAT WAY. AFTER ALL WE DID HELP BUILD THAT TRIPLEWIDE AT THE EAST END OF LITTLE ROCK.
THE BLUE ROOM IS NOT GOING TO BE AT SMU. DBI AND HIS MINION BACTERIAL CLONES KIZZY AND JAZZY AND HIS MURTISHAW RANTINGS WONT EVEN ADMIT THAT ONE.
TALK ABOUT RESPECT FOR THE OFFICE, THE WHITE HOUSE, THE OVAL OFFICE, THE CONSTITUTION, AND PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY. WELL WE HAVE A GUTLOAD OF THAT FROM SLICK.
NON EXISTENT, NEVER WAS, USE EM, AND DUMP EM. VINCE, WEBB AND EVEN THAT PITIFUL LADY THAT SPENT TIME IN PRISON. DONT EVEN REMEMBER HER NAME. THEY JUST DIDNT GET IT. THE ONLY ONE WHO PROBABLY DID WAS VINCE. A CRYING SHAME. A VERY NICE GENTLEMAN. USED TILL HE COULD GIVE NO MORE.

DONT GIVE ME DISRESPECT. HAVE HAD IT UP TO HERE. AND IT WASNT FROM PRES. BUSH. AND HE IS OUR PRESIDENT. SO GET OVER IT. DBI IS THE MOST AMORAL OF THE BLOGGERS I THINK. HE IS THE ONE YOUR DEAR OLD MOMMA WARNED HER DAUGHTERS ABOUT IN THIS WORLD. HOPE HIS KIDS HAVE BETTER LUCK THAN THEIR MOTHER DID. LORDY LORDY. DBI'S MORTY. OR SHOULD I SAY MURTISHAWED TO TEARS.
