Water world
I checked in today on applicants for the vacancy on the Central Arkansas Water Commission. The process is open until Aug. 4. So far, one applicant, former Little Rock City Director Larry Lichty.

L.R. really seems to be a revolving door, and esp true when this story is coupled with previous story on
Spkr of House. Hence, it doesn't require much to shake up the town.

I am a very long time resident of Little Rock----born, raised and educated there. It defies any form of reason or logic for a town to jeopardize it water supply. Even the 'movers and shakers' have to drink that water. If someone had told me fifty years ago that the town would voluntarily put it's water supply subservient to money I would have said that is the one exception for obvious reasons. Even today we put something that we all must have to sustain life at the feet of making a buck. The Little Rock of the 50s wouldn't have done that. However, with the baby boomers running things I guess nothing is sacrosanct.

We have probably reached the point that many cities find themselves in. Well-qualified and well-intentioned residents no longer bother to apply for seats on the plethora of boards and commissions that are self-perpetuating (i.e., the boards select those who will serve on them). Reason: the conveyor belt keeps going round and dumping off the same gaggle of the usual suspects like Lichty. Didn't Lichty just end a long term on the Airport Commission?
A revolving door, as outlined above by eLwood, doesn't quite capture the sinister aspect of these boards and commissions, some of which exercise REAL power, such as CAW does over the very water we drink. Maybe Whack-a-Mole captures more of its essence.
Even so, I guess I'd rather let the board members select their buddies as new members than let guys like Kumpuris keep naming those with power over us.

Given Lichty's performance on the mayor's subcommittee to review the CVB (or his past position on the City Board), I shudder to think of how he'll do on the CAW Board. I do not trust him to resist the influence of local developers and their money and I don't expect that he'll discover ethics or a backbone in a position on CAW.

Oh he got backbone...to stand up to the public good and do his best for the real estate community from whence he came. The voters FINALLY tired of this guy but he still finds the need to offer himself up for our benefit. Larry--take the hint, stay home with the grandkids.

I'm not tired of Larry Lichty. He was not reappointed to the Airport Commission so the Mayor could stuff it with his pals (can you say Schueck, who is also on the Pollution control commission to protect Lake Maumelle notwithstanding some conflict of interests with land he jointly owns). Lichty is a conscientious, public minded person who is not afraid to take on special interests. Just what we need more of. Go get'em Larry.
