1. He's desperate.McCain's pick shows he is not pretending. They roll the dice only when they know that the risks of conventionality are greater than the risks of boldness.
2. He's willing to gamble - bigtime.
3. He's worried about the political implications of his age.
4. He's not worried about the actuarial implications of his age.
5. He's worried about his conservative base.
6. At the end of the day, McCain is still McCain.
NO. 7. He's still got testosterone. He's ready for some strange.

Sarah Palin is nothing more than a Trophy Veep Pick to shore up a desperate and imploding gop. Like McSame, Sarah What's-her-name shoots political blanks.
She's more conservative and pro oil than Dick Cheney.
She's more anti-abortion than Mike Huckabee
She's more ultra-religious than most televangelist's
She's a firm believer in Creationism, hates those who teach evolution.
She's about to be indicted for firing a State Commissioner who refused to fire her ex-brother in-law Mike Wooten.
She's pro drilling off shore
She called the Exxon Valdez accident a minor mistake, with no long term effects
She thinks global warming does not exist.
She was a mayor of town for 8000 for one term, then governor of ALASKA for little more than a year.
But, more importantly... she's a runner up beauty queen!

No one is buying that nonsense argument that McCain is an extension of Bush. That is pure DNC talking points that only resonate on this blog. McCain was often at odds with Bush and the darling of the press when he was. Get real!

"The McCain campaign has made a calculation that most voters don't really care about the national experience or credentials of a vice president, and that Palin's ebullient personality and reputation as a refomer who took on cesspool politics in Alaska matters more."
voters don't really care, VOTERS DON'T REALLY CARE.
Now there is a mouthful! This explains my friends at the bar last night. This explains me prior to the Starr Witch Hunt. I was a Republican up to then because I didn't know a damn thing about Republicans or the party. I was a Republican because my parents were Republicans. They were Republicans because their parents were Republicans. PERIOD.
MoveOn.org caught my attention the day it went public. I started reading their propaganda and while some of it was horse hockey, some of it stuck. At that time, after voting Republican since 1976, 3 months after I turned 21, for the first time in my life I started asking myself....why are you a Republican. After careful self-examination I found I was Republican because my parents were and I was Republican because I'd been told it was the Party of the rich and I just knew I'd be rich someday.
I discovered that's not good enough reasons to call yourself a member of any political party. But I think most voters are doing the same thing. When you don't know which side to be on....just pick one and defend your factless position until you're blue in the face.
Like the last Super Bowl between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.........2 teams I don't know nothing about or give a damn about. But.....what to do over beers at the bar? I was born in upstate New York (shhhhhh) so I thought...that's who I'll pick. But that Republican Jesus freak Peyton Manning's brother was the quarterback, so that squirreled that deal. So that made me a big supporters of the New England Patriots...a team I didn't know jack shit about. And of course New England lost.
And that is how 40 something percent current supports McCain/Palin, they don't know jack shit about them, but in America everyone has to pick a side. So let's see......POW.....that's nabs about 20% right there....doesn't matter what else there is to know about John McCain...POW is good enough!
Maverick! John McCain is a maverick, the MSM says McCain is a maverick. I'll pick a maverick over a damn Muslim any day! Add this 10% to the McCain side of the ledger.
Man I'd FK that! Miss Wasilla 1984 brings in the rest of the McCain/Palin supporters. Nice to know all it takes is nice hair and a vagina to win over these factless voters! Scratch In God We Trust....Add I'd Hit That!
So there you have it. All the facts 45% of American voters need to vote for John McCain & Sweet Buns. For these reasons they are Republicans! Don't cloud their beautiful minds with facts about war, torture, 4150 dead US troops, oil prices, loss of jobs, or anything else.
Be pro-war, be pro-gun, be anti-abortion until you knock someone up, display a willingness to bomb the shit out of anything non-white-non-Christian, love a bunch of Jesus and throw in some nice tits and you can hit the Karl Rove magic 51% and be President for the next 8 years! Know Nothing! Be a Republican!

In the practice of law, most of us (no shit) still adhere to the quaint concept of "professional courtesy." Regardless of how much a doofus your opponent may be, you do not direct the judge's attention to the tobacco stains on his teeth, and if her slip is hanging below her skirt, you catch her in the hallway before she walks through the swinging doors and confronts the jury.
Victory is meaningless if the contest is not fair.
In the practice of politics, the professionals used to believe that courtesy required silence while the other party was dancing the orgy of the national nominating convention. McSamethuselah's (pay attention Max, most good ideas are derivative) Rovian desperate handlers have elected to breach political courtesy, seize the national narrative, and dominate the airwaves with the naming of the Trollop-in-Waiting.
Sweet Sarah believes that the sixty septillion (think 60 followed by 18 zeros) known stars in the universe were created by a fierce old white guy (looks like her most remote Grandad) just so H. sapiens could play out the divine game of 20 questions in the King James; never mind that there are 613 commandments in the Pentateuch. There is a name that fits all Young-Earth Creationists; that name is "Stupid."
OK, for sure, let's give the nuclear football to someone stupid.
For those of you who believe in God and symbolism, there may be no better symbol than the Grand Old Party of Stupidity gathering while God reminds all the rest of us of Sweet Sarah's party's demonstration of competence and caring in Katrina.

"OK, for sure, let's give the nuclear football to someone stupid."
Obama is still looking around his fallout shelter in the nuclear rubble for his little red riding hood button. Anyone that could not see what was coming is not presidential material.
Sometime back I said: "Bomb, bomb, bomb - bomb, bomb, Obama".

You liberals are predictably falling for the trap.
Democratic strategist Kristen Powers recently wrote - "At this point, Palin is so unknown, there's no way to make a clear judgment about her. But listening to Obama supporters take to the airwaves to shriek with indignation about her lack of experience is just a little too rich. Where were they when Obama, two years into the Senate, announced his candidacy for president?
One Obama supporter and political operative blogged, "In picking an unknown, untested half-a-term governor from Alaska . . . John McCain is following in a long line of reckless men who have rolled the dice for a beauty queen." .
I can't help wondering if this is a trap. The McCain camp watched and learned as Obama supporters offended Hillary supporters by their treatment of her. The McCainiacs had to know that this group is incapable of behaving, that Palin would bring out their worst instincts.Do we really have to do this again? No sooner was Hillary Rodham Clinton out of the race, and a new woman is in the cross hairs. On CNN, during a discussion about whether it was appropriate for Palin to accept this job when she has a baby, Dana Bash pointed out it's unlikely anyone would ask this of a male candidate. I can't help wondering if this is a trap. The McCain camp watched and learned as Obama supporters offended Hillary supporters by their treatment of her. The McCainiacs had to know that this group is incapable of behaving, that Palin would bring out their worst instincts. One top Republican said to me: "Just wait until she is debating Joe Biden and he starts attacking or condescending to her. Hillary voters are going to say, 'Oh yeah, I remember this.' "
The bigger trap, though, was the knee-jerk attack on Palin's experience. Calling her a "small-town mayor" only underscored Obama's own woeful lack of experience and recalled his snub to working class Americans when he called them "bitter" and said that they were, "clinging to guns and religion".
Two years as Governor trumps a year as Senator before running for the presidency, and having been an executive in Wasila trumps having been a "community organizer" in Chicago's South Side. Also remember that historically America has elected governors to the presidency not senators. Incidentally how much foreign relations experience did Bill Clinton Have? Hillary?
Further, Palin has a record of attacking her own party's machine to effect real reform in Alaska, where Obama never lifted a finger to support reform of the corrupt Chicago political machine while in Illinois, and had one of its fixers, Tony Rezko, raising money for him most of his career.
Geraldine Ferraro didn't dismiss Palin's experience. She called Palin a risky choice, but the risk is in her lack of national-politics exposure, not from supposedly being unqualified, which Ferraro rejects.
Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson says that Palin will resonate with disaffected women in the Demoratic Party, especially the more moderate voters, who see Obama and his clique as chauvinist - and will more now, after their "beauty queen" reaction.

Well, if the presidency and VP job are all about putting the smartest person in the job, why don't we dispense with the election and just administer an IQ test? That would save a lot of money. However, I might caution you for future reference that hillary flunked her first attempt at the bar exam.

Yes, it's great to see The Citizen's Journal trot out his no to low facts right here on the AT blog. It is opinion, foolish opinion to opine that running a town of 8 thousand amounts to a hill of beans. My dog has more ticks than the town of Wasilla has employees.
"Two years as Governor trumps a year as Senator" Could we see some facts and figures to back up this ridiculous claim? Is the possibility that Palin is still lactating screwing up your reasoning?
"having been an executive in Wasila trumps having been a "community organizer" in Chicago's South Side" CJ....have you ever been out of Arkansas? Have you ever been to Chicago? No town of 8 thousand people has an executive. Gee....I have an executive in my pants?
"remember that historically America has elected governors to the presidency not senators"
I got a house, a yard full of cars, a wife and 2 kids I'll bet that our next President will be a former Senator.
"Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson" Wolfson whored out to Fox News, whatever he says doesn't matter any more. Whores like Wolfson and Huckabee should be shunned since they've proved they'll say anything for money.
Sarah Palin is experienced enough to find the Big Oil & Gas tit to suckle, that's all I need to know about her. There was no reform in Alaska. It's the young Republican wolves clearing out the old sick Republican wildebeests to get their share of the Big Oil Pie. Return to your talking in tongues lessons please.

Because I love the discussion I will hilight the flaws in your arguments even though I think people can clearly see through them, but I will ignore the personal attack levied at me.
First, as to your first bone of contention with the assertion that Governors experience is greater than that of a senator.
Governors and Mayors are in charge of the whole apparatus of government. They are executive positions. The constitutional and statutory duties of the Governor include:
Signing or vetoing bills passed by the Legislature.
Serving as commander-in-chief of the state's military forces.
Convening special sessions of the Legislature for specific purposes.
Delivering a report on the condition of the state to the Legislature at the beginning of each regular session.
Estimating of the amounts of money required to be raised by taxation.
Accounting for all public monies received and paid out by him and recommending a budget for the next two years.
Granting reprieves and commutations of punishment and pardons upon the recommendation of the Board of Pardons and Paroles and revoking conditional pardons.
Declaring special elections to fill vacancies in certain elected offices.
Appointing qualified perons to state offices that carry out the laws and direct the policies of state government. Governors also appoints people to a wide range of advisory bodies and task forces that assist him/her with specific issues.
Senators or more accurately the senate as a whole drafts legislation, ratify treaties, serves as a check and balance and conducts impeachement procedings. The Senate has several exclusive powers not granted to the House, including consenting to treaties as a precondition to their ratification and consenting to appointments of Cabinet secretaries and federal judges.
So while speculative I think the exeutive position requires more individual expertise and commands more judgment than that of a senator.Certainly it is more than that of a "community organizer".
Secondly, Governors who were elected President outnumber Senators who were elected president.
21 Governors were elected president they were; Andrew Jackson, William Harrison, William Taft, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, John Tyler, Martin Van Buren, James Polk, Andrew Johnson, Rutherford Hayes, Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
15 presidents were senators at one time. They were: James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Benjamin Harrison, Warren G. Harding, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon.

"She flunked the D.C. bar exam and only passed the Arkansas bar," he wrote.
It's true.
In his biography of Hillary Clinton, former Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein notes that in the summer of 1973, 817 people took the Washington, D.C., bar exam; 551 of them passed. Hillary Rodham was not one of them.
"For the first time in her life she had flamed out - spectacularly, given the expectations of others for her, and even more so her own," Bernstein wrote.
Bernstein said Clinton kept the news hidden for 30 years and shocked some of her closest friends when she made the revelation with a passing reference in her 2003 autobiography, Living History. She even spins it into a positive.
"Despite the satisfaction of my work, I was lonely and missed Bill more than I could stand," she wrote. "I had taken both the Arkansas and Washington, D.C., bar exams during the summer, but my heart was pulling me toward Arkansas. When I learned that I passed in Arkansas but failed in D.C., I thought that maybe my test scores were telling me something."

"Well, so far his gamble appears to be paying off."
Not true.
The stock market dropped 100+ points following Friday's announcement.
The first two national polls released, Pew and Gallup, reported exactly the OPPOSITE of what the Republicans hoped. Namely, MORE women and independents were now turned off from voting for McCain.
And today the top two Alaska newspapers called Gov. Palin unfit for the job.
The "gamble" doesn't "appear" to be paying off at all. Saying so doesn't make it so.

Again Citizen's Journal, nice try. The Mayor of LA or Chicago or New York or maybe even Dallas might have more shit to crawl through than say a Senator from Utah, but use some common sense man...the mayor of an Alaskan town of 8000? Her job was to keep the 3 trash trucks running, make sure no one found where the sewer pipe dumped raw shit in the backwoods and make sure peace was kept in the drunk tank.
Same with being Governor of Alaska. Arkansas has 3 times the population....ARKANSAS! Putting my opinion up against yours......I believe I win and you suck the hind quarter. Your facts about Presidents and Senators are very nice, but doesn't mean a damn thing this year because a sitting US Senator will be the next President of the United States......period!
Miss Wasilla is as good a choice for VP as Harriet Miers was for the Supreme Court....and we know how well that turned out.

I have no idea how McCain will do in the South. Probably good. Racism is alive and well here as we all know.
I am encouraged by a call I received from my sister in Missouri. She has a friend who has worked for and voted Republican all her life, but today she opened an office for Obama, complete with yard signs, bumper stickers, etc.
She just can't stomach more of the same, and she told my sis that McCain picking someone she never heard of was the icing on the cake.
McCain picking someone that nobody ever heard of just makes me laugh at loud, and makes me think that he really does not want to be elected.
He is in over his head.

Well at this point the only thing I can say with certitude is that IF McThuselah & Barbie win in November it is a CLEAR sign from God that "the end is near" for the US. I'm not sure that David Copperfield, Harry Houdini AND Harry Potter could pull THIS sick rabbit out of a hat, so maybe it doesn't matter, AND I know I'd rather go down with some intelligence represented in the leadership (e.g. Clinton vs. Bush Lite) than a washed-up ramrod entering dementia and his backup bimbo. That's all I'm sayin'...
