It's a woman
CNN says McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. Is he looking for Hillary votes?
Whoever wins the presidency in November, however, the result will be historic.
UPDATE: We're thinking. McCain is 71. He's picked as the person who would succeed him someone whose bona fides are two years in the governor's office in Alaska, period. Can he argue she'd be an able president if he were to croak?
By the way, Palin is solidly anti-abortion, as seen in this story about the birth of her son Trig, who has Down Syndrome. Should go a long way toward buying McCain some much needed credibility with the far right. (But it won't do much about the shriveling number of supposedly disaffected female Clinton voters. That group is solidly pro-choice.)
Bonus: Palin named her son Trig Paxson Van Palin -- "Paxson" after a popular snowmobiling area in Alaska, and "Van" (and we are in no way making this up) because it makes his name sound like "Van Halen," one of her favorite bands from the 1980s.
UPDATE II: Palin's got skeletons. Back in July, the Alaska state senate approved the hiring of a special prosecutor to look into allegations that Palin tried to use her influence to get her former brother-in-law fired from his job as an State Trooper.
UPDATE III: Daily Kos. while not the most unbiased source in the world, makes some solid points while calling Palin a worse VP pick than Dan Quayle. Namely that -- given her state's low population density and lack of much in the way of agriculture -- she doesn't even bring the two things governors traditionally lend to a presidential ticket: agri experience and urban affairs know how.

It is nice to see McCain select someone old enough to be his daughter and not young enough to be his grandchild.

Yes, today is McCain's 72nd birthday. He will be having shrimp.
And Palin, his VP pick, is currently under investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.
Sounds about right. Anti-choice, anti-gay, pro-gun lobby and already politically corrupt.

This is the most inexplicable Veep choice I could have ever imagined. For some one who's campaign is practically contingent on berating Obama for his lack of experience, I don't know what else to do except drop my jaw and laugh at the hypocrisy. Palin's "experience" amounts to less than two years as governor and prior to that, sitting council member and mayor of some small, random town in AK. His pick is so duplicitous, it literally amazes me. McCain is going to be forced to eat his words. This is nothing more than a thinly veiled effort to pander to Hillary's voters and it freakin' REEKS of desperation.
Maybe some one can finally teach Cheney how to properly use a rifle after she and Straight Talk Express demonstrate their right to bear arms by moose hunting in the wilderness of Alaska. This is seriously laughable.

THis takes the whole argument that Obama is too inexperienced to be President, has no military experience, all that crap and essentially throws it out of the window. This lady is one heartbeat away from being President. He just can't argue any more with a straight face that experience and military service mean anything. Just handed Obama a gift, one I'm personally mighty grateful for.
This is baffling. Unless of course, you are cynical and think he did it only to appeal to women voters. NAH, not good ole Maverick McCain. Not the guy that wouldn't bow to pressure as a POW, not the guy who would bow to special interests.. nope, not him. See he was against inexperience and such, before he was for it. That's it.

Over half the US population is female and one gets picked to run for VP and that is a sign we are cursed?
Nearly 60 elections times 2 vp candidates equals over a hundred (early on vp was second vote getter) vp candidates and Geraldean Ferraro and now Palin are running and the country is cursed?

She named her kid Trig Van Palin because she's a Van Halen fan? I know Van Halen appeals to a lot of people, but not grown up people. Naming your kid is like getting a tattoo. You shouldn't end up embarrassed about it a couple of years later.
I do remember their song Hot for Teacher, which is about what a few teachers have done for some lucky lads right here in Arkansas, and then got sent to the pokey for doing it, and I mean doing it. You know, the nasty. I bet a bunch of sourdoughs, young and old, are Hot for Governor.

Sarah Palin, 44, Governor of Alaska, has some controversies attached. There is a controversy over her ex brother-in-law, Mike Wooten. Mike Wooten and Sarah Palin's sister divorced. Mike Wooten worked as a state trooper.
The legislative panel have a $100,000 budget to investigate if Sarah Palin fired Alaska's Public Safety Commissioner because he refused to fire Mike Wooten. Sarah Palin has denied her involvement. Palin denied having her hand in her husband, Todd Palin, dialing Wooten's bosses. Palin's administrative staff also made many calls to Wooten's superiors. When questioned,
The Palins alleged that Mike Wooton drank beer in his patrol car, and fired a Taser at his step son, age 11. Mike Wooton was accused of threatening the safety of Sarah Palin's father.

Even if the "CCCers" (Clinton Conspiracy Clones) are right, McThuselah wins and either croaks or bows out for '12, the Repukes will ALREADY have a woman at the top. What that means is that even tho' there is no rational explanation for a M/P victory in '08 they got it anyway and the Dem party is TOAST. What a wonderful blunder. Her inexperience [2 years as Governor of big but very little Alaska] takes the attack against Obama's inexperience right off the table.
Her political problems [state police, milk board, etc.] make her a Dick Chaney in drag corruption target.
Her on air interviews have been vaporous - she thinks like the basketball player she was. Biden will make polar bear meat out of her.
Her right wing ideology may help secure the Republican base but it will be anathama to Independents.
At base, it reflects the shallowness of the McCain campaign. Keep it up fellows; we need lots of help and you are providing it. In the words of Bill Clinton the other night - "Thanks, but no thanks!"

Let's be honest here, no one really cared about experience in the first place. It was just a talking point. If the Dems really cared about experience they wouldn't have ended up with the three least experienced candidates on top (Obama, Clinton, Edwards). If the Republicans really cared about experience they wouldn't have nominated Bush over McCain eight years ago and they wouldn't pick a VP with less experience than the dude they're trying to nail on lack of experience.

This Tina Fey look-alike's political record is about as long as mine, so there's not much to talk about. Between Obama and Biden and McCain, she's the only one of em I wouldn't mind sleeping with. Is that powerful enough to carry the Republicans to victory? I think I agree with the folks wanting to force McCain to take a test for early stage Alzheimer's.
A more cynical mind would say this choice is a slap in the face of women voters. It could show that McCain thinks women are like cattle, let the lead cow start for the barn and all the rest will line up behind her. The women I know and love are too smart to play follow the leader. McCain went for a cheap gimmick...nothing more. Biden will fillet her like an Alaskan salmon.
Obama promised last night to make America a better country. That and the word Katrina are all one really needs to know to never vote Republican again. Good luck Ms Palin...watch his grubby old hands!

I think it's a bold choice by McCain. Certainly Palin has skeletons in her closet, just like anyone who has passed major reforms. You certainly do make enemies by cutting spending and fighting pork barrel projects.
I think McCain's selection of Palin is a sign that he's serious about fiscal responsibility, and we can look forward to a government that is run in a responsible way. There will be big changes to come if John McCain is elected President, particularly since John McCain really doesn't like George Bush.

If this is McSame's attempt to grab some of Hillary's supporters, he's clueless as well as sexist. In general, feminists support issues first, gender second. She's not a step forward for women.
I'm thrilled he selected her...makes him easier to beat.
Like others, I'm confused by this choice because it nullifies all that inexperience crap that McSame has been throwing Obama's way. (Though I think experience as defined by the DC gang was made moot by Monkeyboy's ultra-experienced crew...who fucked up everything they touched.)
"I think it's a bold choice by McCain. Certainly Palin has skeletons in her closet, just like anyone who has passed major reforms..."--severus
I disagree...skeletons come from shady dealings, not from being an honest reformer. But then Republicans do seem to have their own special way of looking at things. Dr. Strangelove really hates to take advantage of your dilemma but it appears that McCain's strategy is working to a 'T'. Your reaction to Palin reminds me of a girls sleepover when they discover that the room is full of mice running loose on the floor. I have said many times before on this blog that I am NOT voting for McCain and this does not change that. However, I think that this campaign is going to be really fun to follow.
In boxing we call this the old one/two punch. First punch: McCain was very concillatory when he congratulated obamayomama. Second punch: Naming of Palin. The obama camp was not ready for this. They have reacted much as you did---chaos. By the way, I forgot what obama said last night.
Those of you who keep such close scrutiny of what is said on this blog will remember that Dr. Strangelove predicted several days ago that McCain would either go with the safe pick of Romney or the daring pick of Palin. Pay attention when Dr. Strangelove speaks of the repubs.

Okay, JenJens, we'll agree to disagree on this one. I see that it's similar to how the age issue was negated when Obama picked old-man Biden as his VP. I guess that makes us even.
Well, almost. In the spirit of mixed messages, we should also discuss how Obama's mantra of change lost some of it's luster when his running mate has been a career politician - 35 years! And Obama's disdain for lobbyists might be offensive to Biden's son, who is in that profession.
Ah, politics.

Oh, yes, I wouldn't use the lack of experience argument very much. If you express much concern about Palin's lack of experience what are you going to say when the other guy says to you: If Palin's lacks experience to serve as VP, how can obamayomama lack of experience qualify him as president?

Also noteworthy.... This years Alaska GOP caucus results... Gov. Sara Palin managed to help John McCain come in dead last among Republican presidential nominees.

I sure hope the MSM insists these pro lifers drag all their mutant children out for photo ops. How on earth an someone be a good parent to a child with downs syndrome and be Gov much more VP at the same time? I guess it doesn't matter to the self proclaimed family values party as long as you can pay someone else to actually be the parent and hide your children from the public eye.

The one bright spot in this nomination is that in 2 years we'll see Ms Palin in the pages of Hustler magazine....the first Governor spread in porn history. I can't help it, I'm old, but now and then I still get out the old Playboy with Reagan's daughter Patti in it. That one picture of her with those big black hands reaching for her boobs.......oh, excuse me...I keep forgetting what my wife says about me not having to talk about everything that runs thru my mind. Anyway.......Patti......call me!
I'll sure be glad when I wake up and find out that Bizzaro World was just a dream. These last 8 years.....whew....not even Paddy Chayefsky could dream up such a crazy time as we've lived thru the last decade. It's worse than black is now white or right is left......it's black is rhubarb, right is Constantinople! Please let me wake up! Now we have the oldest man on earth running with a Barbi doll no one has ever heard of....what next....they're alien love child? Will Michael Jackson be our next Attorney General.....hell, he'd be a improvement!
I need my Ma to help make sense of it all! But then politics was never Ma's strong suit. We're gonna miss her vote for Obama come November, but we gots Tina Fey to kick around now and you know this is going to be fun! Google women and Alaska and then click on images......lordy what that cold Arctic air does to their chestual regions! Superb! But the Republicans may be onto something....suddenly all I can think of is DRILL DRILL DRILL!

Now I cannot vote at all. There is absolutely no one out there in the running that has a clue to what it takes to run this country. Obama thinks this country needs a change, yeah maybe it does, but is it a black change? I have blacks up and down my street, if their actions are the change Obama wants, then I really don't think so. MCCain thinks...., well maybe he doesn't think, I don't know. Whomsoever it is that takes the oval office seat is in for a wild ride with the way the aggression is in the world today then cased together with the ecological items that really need addressing more than the governments bullshiite tirades. Planet Earth, welcome to the meltdown!

Geesh!
Who's on first?
This circular argument is exhausting.
I know it has gone on way too long, but somehow I feel obligated to explain to people who seem to be too....let's say "hard-headed" to understand that the POINT that got all this started is that McCain has been bitching that Obama didn't have sufficient experience to be president. Then, he goes and picks a VP (who could become P once the old codger finally croaks) who has no experience, thereby effectively negating his argument about experience.
Dimwits say, "Well, Obama doesn't have any experience." And then you try to explain it to them, again, and on it goes.
THIRD BASE!!!
I think I gotta get out of this one and go fix a Bloody Mary.

Comparing Palin's inexperience to Obama's experience is absurd on every level.
Sara said just a short while back when asked about the Vice Presidency.. "Someone would have to tell me what they do before I could answer that."
Sara has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho in 1987.
And - She hasn't been indicted yet.. considering the level of GOP corruption and number of indictments passed around this year from a GOP DOJ... that is nothing short of a miracle.

Poor McCain Palin campaign, with two days remaining they are still trying to decide whether or not they should conduct their convention while a hurricane hits the gulf coast.. and they are scrambling to send busses far and wide to old folks homes and churches (with promises of a free bus ride and all the pudding cups you can eat with your teeth out) in order to be able to fill a convention hall with a miniscule capacity of ten thousand seats.
Meanwhile, Ron Paul has a sold out show in the same town in a venue with a much larger capaity.

Jus sayin' I consider both Mccains adopted child and Palin's choice to have a child with down's... both children have genetic mutations.. bless their hearts.
Both parents seem to be comfortable with farming out care of those children rather than raising them themselves. Both parents seem to be hiding them from the public eye.. except when they talk about them to make themselves look better.
If a parent makes a choice to adopt or have a child with genetic mutations.. you should be a parent first and foremost.. far more so than parents of a "normal" child. And when the party of denial, the party of neanderthals refuses to discuss it.. I intend to point out their hypocrisy at every turn.

What a thread!
Fletch is right. This will be Eagleton II. She won't make it to November. They're going to find out that she really doesn't handle the ball that well, her jump shot is gone, and that she's lost a step. They're also going to find out that she's simply not corrupt enough for the ticket. Seriously, I think the party leadership is going to poll this and focus group it and have a cow.
Was it Severus who said she has been a crusader against pork barrel spending? That's an interesting description of a politician from the land of the bridge to nowhere and the indicted Sen. Ted Stevens!
She is without a doubt the best looking candidate in history. I think her addition to Mt. Rushmore will be nice. However Tina Fey would have been a better choice. She's much prettier and has more appropriate experience. She probably didn't want to give up her comedy gig.
McThuselah is screwed. (Insert comment here. Double pun intended.)

Eureka - First off, there's a pretty big distinction between 'mutant children' from your first post and 'children with genetic mutations' that you used later when I questioned your comments. Second, I don't see how this shows any hypocrisy on anyone's part. Why should they discuss it? I don't understand this. If they did, people would say they were using their kids for sympathy. If they don't, you say they are hiding their kids. I don't have any children, much less any special-needs kids, but if I was in the public eye I think I'd probably leave ALL of my kids out of the discussion. It sounds like you're questioning their parenting skills BUT I don't know how you can make that call unless you know them. And I don't think you do.
Bottom line, I don't think this has anything to do with the candidates whatsoever.

Of course it does. You cannot be a good parent to a child with downs and be a Governor or VP at the same time. The demands of good parenting for a child with Downs are enormous. Being pro choice..and making the choice to have that child, as the Palins did.. should require they actually raise their children, not hide them, ignore them..in order to pursue a career.
Millions of other folks set aside their careers because it's best for their children/family. The Palins and quite possibly the Mccain's should have done so.
Sorry you have trouble with the accuracy of the words mutant/mutation. I stand by their accuracy, but I'll try to use "special needs" from here on out. It's their special needs of which I am trying to support.. lord knows it doesn't look like their parents are.

Down syndrome - Genetics Home Reference
The extra genetic material disrupts the normal course of development, causing the characteristic features of Down syndrome.

None of this has been a serious discussion about the candidates or their VP picks. Palin and Biden will only get to debate once before a national audience. At best, one could describe most responses here as knee-jerk or worse. Definitely not good analysis or fair opinion.
The talking heads and pundits aren't doing much better, mind you. They are talking more about how the campaigns will deal with these choices rather than about the chosen people, their performance, their plans and proposals, and their positions. It's about as vapid as a Hollywood gossip report.
In the end, it looks like the Dems will make it a Bush vs Obama campaign and the Repubs will make it look like Obama vs Experience campaign. Words like trust, judgment will be intoned with God-like rumblings. Idiots of all stripes and persuasions will try to use fear, smear, and the price of beer to convince you of your inherent stupidity for not agreeing with their twisted version of the facts.
Somewhere between a hatred of lies and a hunger for the truth lies the cheap salvation of defining this American farce with highlights, hope, and humor.
And what does all the political advertisement suggest to an outsider looking in? That Americans are a culture of rubes and dupes, easily swayed and manipulated, and led by the power of an advertisement and relying too much on the advertisement of their power.

Miss Wasilla 1984, I assume Wasilla is the name of a city and not an intestinal disease, or Sarah Barracuda, as she's known as in Alaska, may be OK if she can clear herself of this government ethics investigation. We know she can win a beauty pageant in Alaska, a state not known for tons of pretty girls, and lordy, I know she can win a beauty pageant in DC, known for dog ugly people of all 3 sexes.
When McShrimp introduced her to America at the Ervin J. Nutter Center, and isn't that the perfect name, she said she was just a hockey mom....is that horse hockey she speaks of? She's a Janet, she loves to hunt and kill things. And that's about all we know about her. And probably that's about all there is to her. If very well could be she is the only good person in the Republican Party, so no wonder it took months and months of searching like the Lawd did before he found Noah and told him to build the Ark.
Hurray! Maybe, just maybe, McShrimpy found the only decent Republican....we'll know in few days. I hope someone finds Sarah Barracuda's private sex tape and puts it on YouTube! I got a 3 day weekend ahead of me and not a damn thing to do.
Since Ms Palin has such a short bio, it will be up to our wingnuts to consult their imaginary friend and make up a bunch of nice stuff to say. Won't take much digging to find the dirt on her 3 year political career. Click on my name to learn more about Miss Wasilla and see that she was indeed a knockout in 1984...and may I say that I was rather nice looking then too!

I don't know I heard some heavy handed eugenics here by some of the ARKBLOG regulars. It certainly sounds to me in the same spirit of Dr. Mengele. I think that if he were here he would have his arms around you guys thanking you for keeping the nazi spirit high and continuing. You guys could probably keep him a few tricks. Hitler only got around to killing 6 million human beings. You guys have done in at least 50 million. Yea, the mengele spirt award is definitely yours.

She actually supports gay rights. Her first veto as Governor was to veto a bill that would deny benefits to same-sex couples in Alaska. She doesn't support gay marriage but supports civil unions, as well as opposes these right-wing adoption measures.
She also is a dues-paying member of a union as is her husband. Frankly, I think she is an imaginative choice and she must be doing something right because Alaskans love her. Her popularity is in the 90% range.
She's also probably not in league with the Mike Huckabee people for another reason. The first order of business when she became Governor....she sold the state plane the Governor used!

This pick officially takes Obama's lack of experience off the table-Posted by: rosso
********
At least, as Governor, she has a few years as chairman of the committee, the top dog.
While, as a Senator, he has a few years as just a member of the committee, an uindistinguished critter in the pack with pretty fur and a nice bark.
And she won't be in charge - she will at least be apprenticing until needed - while he will have to have OJT from Day One.
So I guess that doesn't take experience off the table - just kinda moves it from the centerpiece to the dessert tray.

So, eating bacon is murder, eating eggs is abortion and murder; calling little lumps of cells a baby and ignoring the out of control population growth worldwide is considered morally correct; labeling one action murder but defending the killing of men, women and children as necessary evils is another morally correct attribute.
Lies and lunacy but little laughter.
But, if you want a laugh - just see how far the Repubs will distance themselves from Bush next week.

You said it, Arch: "The idea that this pick is some sort of a sop to Hillary voters or feminists in general is a slap in the face to any woman with two brain cells to rub together."
McThuselah (thank you, Larry) to his staff: "Those Hillaryite cunts will vote for me now."
Off the top of my head, I can think of three Republican women who would make better VP candidates when you consider the heartbeat issue -- Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Olympia Snow and Jodi Rell. No doubt there are a dozen more with better credentials than Sarah Palin. But any one of them would at least verbally knock the old goat's head off if he so much as whispered his favorite word for women in their presence.

There are several ways to respond to such challenges. The best is to realize that it is a last resort and that it comes from a losing position, why else resort to specious name-calling and sexual taunts as if that makes one something better than the other person.
I can't see stooping to respond in kind, especially coming from one old man to another old man. It is sad that one has to resort to communicating like a Neanderthal and grabbing at your crotch. Anger makes you do ridiculous things.
For someone who claims to be a man's man, a Christian's Christian, and a thinker's thinker then this last outburst has shown how false all these claims are.
"Vagina boy" and "panty-waist crap" and "house boy" and "girlyboy" just resonate with such persuasion that I grow faint. Jeezus on a pogo stick, but I must control my raging hormones. How can I deal with such an odious assault on my manhood and my so-called dignity?
Easy. Just remember the source.

strange - or rather Lt. Col., thought I would pass on a conversation that I overheard the other day.
As you will remember, you had one of the best Color Guard units in the state. Won alot of awards and got to travel to quite a few competitions over the years. But those four boys who became best friends in the ninth grade were still best friends the day they graduated from Central in 2007 and still remain so today.
The call came the other day from Iraq, it was the first kill call. Had to mow down an entire Iraqi family that was in the middle of the road and wouldn't move. 50 cals can be quite powerfull.
Interesting call, "please don't tell Mom or Dad, or my wife for that matter". "You and I can talk about this". Now at $1.84 a minute to Iraq, I don't know how many conversations my son will get to have.
Care to take a guess out of your top four who this was?

My younger brother was with the Marines at the US embassy in Saigon during the last days. He had to fire his M60 into a crowd of civilians. It still remains with him and affects him.
He's not out of it like some people get from their wartime experiences nor does he suffer major PTSD problems. He just knows that on a few occasions, duty and survival forced him to do some very horrible and wicked things. He's gone thru 3 divorces and is dealing with bankruptcy right now. He'll land on his feet and start anew.
But, those are not going to leave a scar like the tragic taking of innocent lives does to a 18 year old Marine. It's like a knife that has been left buried in your gut for years. You grow accustomed to its presence and accept it as a just punishment for your actions.
He will always remember Saigon.

I did on the other thread:
The neglect of the veterans isn't new. I remember criticism of the treatment of veterans all the way back to the Korean War. Most of you are too young. It isn't new. It is also wrong. We ought to be treating them like kings. However, most of you jerks only get concerned about veterans when it serves your political agendas. I never hear you complaining about veterans treatment. How many of you have been to a VA hospital in your entire lives? Nil. If you are really concerned about vets support Presidents who support the military. I don't care about any party I only believe your money. Put your bucks where your mouth is. When I was a young Lt. and just out of Graduate School Igot called a 'baby killer' by a left wing college kid. The punk didn't know me. He just generalized. Most of you on this blog would have done the same. When you say that you support the troops but don't support our mission you are full of crap and we know it. In the world that I used to live in we didn't put up with any BS. You guys just are full of BS. Don't say that you support us and then turn around and say that what we are doing is a 'sucker's play'. That ain't support. Ok, jerkoff, I answered your question.

Is it normal for parents of "special needs" children to have parents who work with demands of Governors or Vice Presidents? Is that child cared for properly by its actual parents? Or is it raise d by a nanny and paraded about for photo ops, or not, only when it's convenient? I've only had a little time to check around, but it pretty easy to find information suggesting at least 5 to 6 hours a day of one on one parenting is required with children who have Downs Syndrome.
She made her choice... she needs to live up to it. She needs to do much more than that since she is a woman who thinks abortion should be illegal even in cases of rape or incest. Holding her responsible for her own standards..and expecting her children receive proper care from their parents.. well if she can't do that she sure and the heck shouldn't be a candidate for VP and may very well need a visit from AK child services (or whatever they call it up there).

Drew, Drew my darling: I KNOW what I'm about to say is politically incorrect stereotyping.
But then again, you wouldn't be a politically incorrect stereotype yourself if you weren't an out and proud drag queen and about as representative of the average gay male as Richard Simmons. A joke, in other words, unlike actually serious gay male politicians who're making strides and winning elections around the country.
So, may I query your drag fashionista's opinion of Gov. Palin's hair? I understand how this look plays well in Alaska and Texas. But didn't the shitzu look go out with Charo?
The overly-long bangs, the pulled-back lightly teased and ratted "natural" hair, topped with that actual dead shitzu pelt clip-on that doesn't remotely match Palin's streaked tint?
I mean, doesn't she fucking KNOW, my darling? Is she being styled by a big fat dyke at Family Cuts in Juneau?
Did nobody vet her HAIR?
I'm being serious here. Wouldn't she be eliminated in the preliminary round of the Miss Gay USA Pageant?
And trust me, Drew, precious. Palin is NOT in any way pro-gay. Perhaps the carcinogenic chemicals in your Clairol have seeped into your brain.
So what is she doing HERE? As VP of America? With that dead dog's fur perched on top of her head?
My God! I just want to throw her a frisbee and toss her some kibble when she fetches it back in her teeth and wags her tail.
Anyhoo, Drew, I know you can get to the bottom of this for me.
No pun intended, sweetness.
