The killer's trail UPDATED

BREAKING NEWS

Channel 11 has interviewed one of Timothy Dale Johnson's classmates at ASU-Beebe, where the man who killed Democratic Party chair Bill Gwatney had been taking computer courses.

He was odd, says fellow student Reggie Tucker. But you knew that.

It also would appear that Johnson, whose last vote was cast in the Republican presidential primary, didn't like Democrats, though the records show he participated in Democratic primaries a few times. Does that necessarily tell us anything about Gwatney's shooting? No. But ...

... Tucker says he and other classmates do recall Johnson being vocal about his views.

"I would always remember going to class and I would see that he had a Bill Clinton anti-campaign sticker [on his car] that says I don't miss Bill. [No such bumper sticker was on the pickup he crashed in a police chase, however.]  "He would surf the internet and he would see that a Democrat had died and he would laugh about it."

Possible clues, Tucker says, about why Johnson targeted Bill Gwatney, Arkansas Democratic party chairman

"I would like to have a motive. That is why I contacted you in the e-mail because no one has shown that he went to school at ASU Beebe, and he spends a lot of time there. Maybe he talked to somebody, or maybe somebody could get in his mind that might come forward and talk about it," Tucker explains.

ALSO ON TV: KARK reports that Johnson's family gave the Grant County sheriff a brief statement of regret and sympathy for the Gwatney family. The Johnson family plans no public service. I didn't see a mention of last night's prayer vigil for Gwatney in the morning paper, but here's KATV coverage. And this includes a reference to a vo-tech classmate of Johnson's years ago who remembers him as shy, but smart and not prone to violence.

Here's yet another odd step uncovered in the path that brought shooter Johnson to his victim:  less than an hour before coming to Little Rock and shooting Gwatney around midday Wednesday, Johnson was at a Cabot hair salon, inquiring after a woman who often cut his hair. This would have been not long after he walked off his job after a meeting with managers over angry graffiti Johnson had written on walls at a Conway Target, where he worked overnight as a stocker.

Employees of the Villa Hair Salon in Cabot confirmed that Johnson was the regular client of a female stylist at the salon. The stylist is currently on maternity leave. According to an employee there, Johnson came in Wednesday morning between 10:30 and 11: 15 a.m. and asked if his regular stylist had given birth to her baby. After being told that she hadn't, he left without getting his hair cut. Gwatney was shot in Democratic Party headquarters on Capitol Avenue about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Asked why Johnson would choose to regularly get a trim in Cabot when he lived in Searcy and worked in Conway, the woman who answered the phone at Villa Salon said that Johnson was very quiet, and that he never said why he frequented the business.

Comments

This Johnson guy is sounding more and more like he worked for the CIA instead of Target. Even if he was crazy, it sounds like he had a plan of some kind. Keep digging!

It's weird. The guy looks familiar to me, but I can't place him. I'm rarely in Searcy, Conway, or Cabot.

Hugh,

Yes. I posted the same thing last night. And I can not get it off my mind. It feels like one of those "tip of your tongue" experiences.

I think the guy looks very familiar, too, and I don't know why. I think that every time I see his picture. I wish I could figure out why.

It's creeping me out a little bit.

Same here, Hugh and Ones: When I saw that guy's photo, I was certain I had seen him around before. But where? I've been in the Conway Target once. Doubt I saw or noticed any product stockers.

Weird stuff.

High School. He is that guy from High School.

Weird stuff indeed! I thought it was just me. I'm all the way in another state and I thought the same thing - he looks familiar but I can't place where I've seen him.

I think it's just that there's a guy who looks exactly like that who works in the post office in every town in America.

Sounds like we are safer due to good police work the other day!

How does someone drive around that much on four dollar gas and Target paycheck? What's the story on the other car, is it one belong to two of his Gwatney keychains?

He does look familiar... did he protest at womens/family planning clinics? I used to stop and photograph the anti choice protesters in the late 90's.. boy did that make them uncomfortable. ANyway all those photos are on film, not digital. Maybe I will see if they were not thrown away a few years ago.

Those who say Tim Johnson looks familiar can add me to their ranks. When first I saw his photo, I was taken aback; almost gasped. I would have sworn (and still would) that I've seen the guy somewhere, and it wasn't at the post office. I'm terrible with faces and rarely remember them, but THIS guy I've seen. Was somewhat relieved when OnesAndZeros first mentioned having had the same feeling. It's unsettling, and is as good an excuse as any to have another pre-dinner cocktail.

"I think I know who it is. I am praying for him!" --- posted by thenaturalstate

This was the very first post after this story broke. Question for thenaturalstate: were you right?

Yes, I received a call within 10 minutes of the shooting with the bad news and did not have access to television. I got on here to see what the news types were saying. I was told in the call it was Gwatney, but withheld his name to prevent harm to those who should learn from authorities. I cared a lot for him and sought prayer for him then.

I've seen this guy before too, and I've never been to the Target in Conway or to Searcy. I think he's been at a political event at some point. This was clearly politically motivated, and we as a society need to deal with this and work to stop it.

From KTHV: "And what about Johnson's political stance? Well, Today's THV has learned that Johnson's voting record shows he did not favor a particular party. Three years ago he voted Democratic and then most recently he voted Republican in the presidential primary."

That's a pathetic attempt at trying to whitewash his political views. Many Republicans in Arkansas vote in the Democratic primaries. This guy did once, had anti-Clinton stickers, and laughed when Democrats died? Do we need to draw a picture?

How ridiculous! No one knows what caused this guy to do what he did. Implying that this guy was motivated because he was a republican, or a man, or a gun lover, or a listener of talk radio, etc. is beyond stupidity. Unless you are psychic, please shut up. The lefty nut cases on this blog are so predictable. I have no idea why this nut case did what he did. However, I don't know and neither does anyone else on this blog.

Memo to thenaturalstate:
I apologize. I misunderstood your original post. Thought you feared you knew the killer.

The facts say he liked to laugh about dead Democrats and killed the Democratic party chairman. You don't have to be psychic to add 2+2.

The bottom line is that, just as Hitler convinced Germany it was OK to kill Jews (and there are some great new books out on that psychology), so Rush, Rove, Cheney et all have convinced conservatives it is OK to persecute and demonize Democrats.
'
So don't wash your hands when someone starts killing liberals and Democrats, because you are simply reaping what you have sown.

Back to Tim Johnson looking like somebody we've seen. I froze his photo on the late TV news tonight and looked at it for a long while. The more I looked, the more I saw Alan Sugg as he appeared a few years ago. Similar facial structure, eye size and placement, etc. Sugg's is a face familiar to almost all Arkansans, and it could be that that's why Johnson's face looks familiar. Ya think? Forgive me, Alan.

Durango--

When I first saw your post about Sugg, I couldn't recall ever seeing a picture of Sugg, though I am sure I must have. I did find one online finally and agree that they do look alike. Since Hugh Mann and I live near the President's house, maybe this is why he looks familiar to us. Maybe I see him out walking when I am walking my dogs.

Thanks for the reassurance, CammackLife. At bluename, I've tried to affix a photo of Sugg so others can take a look and decide if maybe we're on to why Johnson may look familiar. Put some glasses on Sugg's face and what do you see?

Well, I'm pretty sure I've seen Tim Johnson somewhere, too, maybe in Fort Smith, where I live, and in Fudville, where I frequently go on business. Then it struck me: He looks a lot like Deathbyinches, and somewhat like eLwood, a little like the Durango Kid. Just coincidences, but eerie. Clones, perhaps.

May/June Issue of Brainwork, the newsletter of the Dana Foundation ends article "Antidepressant Debate May Miss the Mark: Suicide fears overshadow misue in bipolar disorder" with "I think the advisce is, pay attention to antidepressants for the real reasons, like the increased agitatilon and mania that can occur. If these druges had a label that said: 'Before using an anti-depressant, you must screen for bipolairty and include a family member in the screening process,' that would be really helpful label." he adds: "unfortuantely, we got disctreacted by this suicididality silliness." The reporter, Brenda Patoine is a science writer who has been covering neuroscience for more than 15 years. She can be reached at bpatoine@aol.com. " The he referred to is Fred Goodwin, a former firector of the National Institute of Mental Health.

Many people with bi-polar disorder are wrongly diagnosed with depression and given anti-depressants. Anti-depressants should never be given to someone with bi-polar disorder because it can make it worse.

Nice try Casimer, but everyone knows I look like Homer Simpson's neighbor, Ned Flanders. I thought I knew Johnson too, had a picture of him when he was 20 or so in my mind. Finally, after a couple of days of wondering I got out my high school year books and discovered the picture I had in my mind was of a dwarf red headed kid named Micky. So that settles that.....or does it? As much driving around as this guy did, he may have visited every town in Arkansas once a week. He sounds more spook than human.

I know for a fact that I have never seen him before. Just in case anybody is interested.

DK --- the Alan Sugg idea has true merit. I have known him for over twenty years and I am trying to remember him at a slightly younger age than today. Maybe that is the source of the deja vu feelings.
