Billionaire opposes lottery

How about this? Jillionaire Jim Walton has sent $75,000 in loose change to the campaign against a state lottery.

Well at least you and the Home of Low Wages can find common ground on something.

Wonder if it boils down to Wal-Marts not being able to get lottery operations in their stores?
Or is it that money spent on lotteries is less money spent at Wal Mart?

ARK. BLOG: I think the answer is (B)

.

I guess Mr. Walton can't find a sports complex/temple to fund to get his name splattered all over it .

I think you're on to something, eLwood. I'm guessing that Walton's mentality is not unlike that of prosperous Mississippi County planters in Blytheville and Osceola back a hundred years ago when cotton was king. They fought fang and claw the notion that what now is Arkansas State University should be located in their county. The school was to emphasize agriculture, you see, and if people were educated, who would hoe and pick the cotton? The school went to Jonesboro. Been to Jonesboro lately? Been to Blytheville or Osceola? The difference (economically, culturally, and otherwise) is astounding --- proof that education doesn't cost; it pays. Nevertheless, God forbid that we have a lottery to help finance higher education.

Of course the Walton's would oppose Lotteries--and being all paternalistic about it to boot. Too bad the nearest Target in this area is in Little Rock...

Jim Bob W is just furthering a bottom line Wal-Mart belief and tradition...thou shalt not have competition. Not only do they expect every dollar to be spent at Wal-Mart, they also don't want others to become millionaires, who next might be billionaires and cause parking problems at the Country Club. They want to remain the big fish, they want us to remain the small pond.

Been to Jonesboro lately? Been to Blytheville or Osceola? <<

Surely you jest.

L.R. and Hot Springs are only Ark destinations of interest.

Why should I go over there and hear over and over that I
live in the "Golden Triangle?" ..that's what they call the
3 major towns in NWA, and hear there boring blues
shows and eat another piece of fried catfish. It's autumn
in Ozarks early this year. Appletown is about to boom,
and our freezer has Ozark blueberries.

I'm off to hear Lioneld Jordon discuss the virture of labor
at a Democrat luncheon. It's Labor month. Lioneld is the
first union man to be running for Mayor of Fayetteville in
a long time. He could be the first. He works for UA physical
plant and is the only native son running for Mayor.

DON"T FORGET TODAY IS AN ELECTION DAY!!
