Can you spare a dime?

Various city groups will roll out at a press conference this morning the program to set up contribution boxes as an alternative to giving money to panhandlers.

The panhandlers will still be with us, of course. But you can now tell them you gave at the drop box.

I tend to think that brushing off a panhandler with "I boxed you" may generate some anger, esp if he is recovering from DTs or a meth high.

.

Just tell them to get a box.

That's a pretty cruel way of looking at it eL. you been rubbing all over your gold bars this morning? I would imagine more people will use the boxes as an excuse to do nothing except lie about the fact they really did put some money in the box. I would agree about anger, but it will probably be because they are, you know, hungry and homeless.

Why anyone would put money in a box.. for some organization to steal or otherwise grift from the take... when you could hand a person in need the cash directly is beyond me.

Nothing like introducing governmental bureaucracy into panhandling. Why not a drive-thru window for the prostitution trade? Next I'll be required to buy yearly tags for the moles in my garden. And what bum is going to trust a happy group of do-gooders with their hard begged money? We grind too small...

Shouldn't be too hard on the panhandlers because we may be joining them.

Why not create jobs for them instead like they did in Portland OR? Pass a city ordinance banning self-service fuel sales and put them to work on convenience store payrolls pumping gas and washing windshields. Enforce the provisions of the ADA making auto services accessible to disabled motorists. It would get them off the streets and into a real job. How many jobs could be created in LR by such a measure? There's a gas station in every neighborhood.

No, not rubbing my gold today Eureka. Besides it's down, the gold shares that is.
But, gold is still 625 points higher than what I paid for my paper nuggets. Think just
after the election I will melt down those plated awards I won. Surely the good stuff
can be separated. Then a couple of pairs of cuff links I haven't worn in over 20 yrs,
2 class rings nobody wants, 14k should be worth something, like another 5 gal of dried
peas and some more .45 ammo for when the homeless break out our windows to eat.

I think you will find many homeless people are drunks and druggies. That is no reason to
disregard them. A large number of homeless people are veterans. Sad commentary on
USA-Support-Our-Troops.

I must agree with you. You have to wonder how much leakage occurs when any "program"
is established for charitable reasons. Two travelers came carrying their stuff in duffel bags
looking for the Salvation Army...they were hunry...we fixed them sandwiches and canned
Mexican fruit drinks, gave the two of them apples and chocolate for the road. Decent guys
looking for work, from Texas where they said things had dried up.
.

Two travelers came by Sunday.
