More on LRSD talks

A more detailed list of talking points has been assembled by the Little Rock School District's attorney, Chris Heller, to send to the state attorney general's office for discussions about bringing an end to the desegregation lawsuit. These "key settlement issues" include a representation that a cap of state desegregation spending at $70 million per year would save the state more than $100 million over the seven-year phaseout of desegregation aid. This presumes that costs would otherwise rise by about 5 percent a year as they have historically.

The list also indicates a softening of a statement Tuesday night calling for a moratorium on charter schools in Pulaski County. The issues list now says:

The state Board of Education will agree that approving any additional open enrollment charter schools in Pulaski County or increasing the enrollment of existing charter schools in Pulaski County will have a negative impact on the ability of the District to achieve and maintain a unitary school district absent a finding to the contrary by the district's board of directors.

Comments

All of this nonsense where children's education is being decided by the courts and John Walker is the reason why parents who have the means have rejected the LRSD and have chosen private schools. A few weeks back you had a report that showed that the LRSD has experienced another year of declining enrollment. No parent should be surprised at that. Charter schools are much sought after. No parent should be surprised at that. Unfortunately, no matter how clear it is relative to the problem you have some enablers who typically put their head in the sand and start their predictable enabling of a failed system. Consequently, the system continues to fail. Until you can agree on the problem you will never save the patient. When the parents realize that the school system is not about educating children but simply existing as an employment agency for people to have high paying jobs that they normally wouldn't qualify for then you have failure.
