I'm waiting for somebody to bring up Sister Sarah's "foreign policy experience", that is floating around the internet: She's the governor of a state that borders Canada, a foreign country (no shit) and the closest state to Russia (no shit).
By that rationale, I guess the gov's of these states are also qualified: Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Also, do ya'll know how close Florida is to Cuba!?
I didn't realize it until this thing came up, but I guess I've got foreign policy experience also. My next door neighbors are Mexicans. I talk to 'em all the time. Why, just the other day I yelled out "Hey, Jose! When you get finished edging that sidewalk why don't you come over here and do mine?" Sure did. Jose refused. When they talk of McCain's Vietnam experiences, why do they skip over the Forrestal fire? I don't think he did anything that caused that disaster, or acted in a way that would bring shame. But, it would seem to be a significant event in his life that could even be used to boost the "hero" image. It is never mentioned!

I have explained numerous times why I am not voting. Republicans have abandoned those principles that they used to stand for. Some of you said it, they have run up a deficit that makes them no different than demos. The vote for earmarks and 'bridges to nowhere'. McCain is no conservative. The words Oil and Drill and Tax Cuts...now that will make a Republican stand right up and cheer. It's always about money, when people are tortured and killed, it's aways about money. My 16 year and I were just talking about Palin's speech. We both agreed her delivery was great, she is a talented teleprompter reader...right up there with Reagan. Her speech was good...let me rephrase that.....her speech was exciting to her base. Those without southern ears would say 100%. She looks good, her family looks good, even the daughter obviously dressed in a fat suit tonight. Her husband is obviously a good looking player....someone start looking for his love children.

But...back to my point. Suspending all modesty, both my daughter and myself are quite able to write a speech that would put Palin's to shame, but only if, like her, we're also allowed to suspend with the truth and make it all up. It's very hard to write a great speech if it all has to be true. That's what trips up honorable people. Forced to speak the truth, Miss Wasilla's speech would have only lasted 1 minute tops. As it is, she did a wonderful job of giving a very finely crafted speech containing very little truth.

My daughter understood perfectly and I'm glad we could have this little chat. You can use bad people as a teaching tool, in fact pointing out the bad they do is the best way to teach your children how to be good Americans.

As hard headed as McCain is he will probably keep Palin even when the smoking gun turns up in the next couple of weeks. That is good for Obama and Obama is good for the world.....so...uh.....good!

(ST. PAUL, MINN.) - John McCain's campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband's business partner.

"The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie," said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.

"The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."

Political speeches are written by speech writers - a talented politician delivers these speeches in a manner that is inspirational and favorably reflects the speaker's persona. She did this in a way that Obama and Biden (and even McCain) can only dream about. (And without Hillary!'s screech).

Between Obama's absolute and total lack of governing experience for the #1 spot and Palin's few years of governing experience for the #2 slot . . . Forget Mr. HorseHockey, I'll go with Ms. HockeyMom!

Her speech was effective at two levels - it shored up the the conservative GOP base, and it had strong appeal to independents. If she can hold her own in the debate with Biden, it's going to be a competitive race.

Does anyone besides me look at their natural gas bill in August ? People are actually paying the credit they got on this bill. Arkansas Natural Gas was sold and is distributing $9.8 MILLION. But who is it going to? I got a $25 credit in month when I used very little gas. In a normal month my credit would have been $1100-$1300. I am very disturbed by this but am finding it difficult to find anyone else who is even paying attention to the bills they pay each month. Do we really trust the corporations that much. Oh, but the real culprit is the Public Service Commission who regulated this fiasco and told the natural gas company to distribute the money based on the AUGUST usage of natural gas.

I actually watched Palin speak for at least ten minutes...without channel surfing. Aside from being fuckable (which is a whole other issue), she speaks well...especially compared to President Shit for Brains/McSame. But that's just better widow dressing for the same ol Republican crap. I did learn, however, that there's a mythical group running around governing my country in the name of Republicans (and a few Dems). All this time I've been blaming Congress/the Senate and the prez for how our money's spent, what laws are created/broken, for sending our people into an unnecessary based-on-lies war, for torturing others in our name, for Guantanamo, for warrantless wiretapping, for fighting a war so China could have Iraq's oil...when it's those DC Insiders who've been crapping on us. Well just wait till Ms Sarah gets there...she's gonna do something about those DC Insiders, big government, deficit spending, blah blah. I've been too busy with family to post on the blog much, but I've kept up with the news and read some of your posts and I fear we are underestimating the ability of the voting public to be totally fooled and enamored of a total idiot.

This morning I read a post from Nate on FiveThirtyEight which reads in part - "I think some of you are underestimating the percentage of voters for whom Sarah Palin lacks the standing to make this critique of Barack Obama. To many voters, she is either entirely unknown, or is known as an US Weekly caricature of a woman who eats mooseburgers and has a pregnant daughter. To change someone's opinion, you have to do one of two things. Either, you have to be a trusted voice of authority, or you have to persuade them. Palin is not a trusted voice of authority -- she's much too new. But neither was this a persuasive speech. It was staccato, insistent, a little corny. It preached to the proverbial choir. It was also, as one of my commentors astutely noted, a speech written by a man and for a man, but delivered by a woman, which produces a certain amount of cognitive dissonance."

I disagree with Nate completely - I think Nate is the one who is estimating improperly and he's falling into the trap of making fun of a woman on the national stage. Granted this woman is a cartoon and she's laughable, but the Republican Party won't likely step back and allow her to be ridiculed by the media or Democrats in the way the media and Democrats got away with ridiculing Hillary. It was okay for her, but it will get the same backlash from middle America that Hillary supporters got when they pointed out that a black man might lose the election for Dems, and they were called racist. Nate is basing his tealeaf reading on the thinking of committed Democrats plus the left wing of the party that was involved in the pilloring of Hillary, and they didn't 'get it' then and they aren't 'getting it' now. I don't think the average Joe thinks Palin has no standing to criticise Obama - the average Joe thinks they BOTH have no standing so they cancel each other out completely and we are back to McCain - respected if not beloved by the Repubs, and Obama with tepid support from middle America and beloved by the far left of Democrats.

John McCain insulted thinking women with this cynical choice, but I think the con will work just well enough to scare the hell out of Dems, if not steal the election entirely. To the extent that the VP choice reveals anything about the two candidates, what I hear from middle America is that "Obama NEEDED Biden and McCain EXCITED his party".

I wanted Biden as VP because I didn't want any of our other rising stars to go down if Obama loses, but I'm not convinced so far, that Obama has yet shown that he understands the challenge ahead for him and is prepared to do what it takes to win this election. I still think he has too much ego even though I concede that it takes a lot of ego to run for Pres, but his hands are tied at using the very unqualified and silly nomination of Palin as campaign fodder, and if the media piles on her, the rwingers will come out in full force as they did for GWB. They would like nothing better than being responsible for another four years of the same only worse.

Whatever thinking Republicans (I'm not sure how many there are who still think) think of Palin, they will protect her and defend her and middle America may well appreciate that in light of the beating Hillary took with no defense from her own party, and be drawn to Republicans once again.

Giuliani added the following comments to his speech - they are not in the version released to the media yesterday:

"I'm sorry - I'm sorry that Barack Obama feels that her hometown isn't cosmopolitan enough.

I'm sorry, Barack, that it's not flashy enough. Maybe they cling to religion there."

I hope Giuliani doesn't get away with such blantant diversions, or the implication that Palin and her kind have a monopoly on religion, or embrace the one true religion, or that Democrats are all pagans. But since this isn't in the released text, the media seems to be overlooking this inappropriate slight.

hickintheheights, if you'll spend the time to fact check everything Pretty Sarah said last night I believe you'll then be an Independent voter who supports Barack Obama.
