it is rumoured that in tonight's acceptance speech, John McCain will mention the fact that he was a P.O.W. for five years, as he recounts his life experiences in trying to make the argument that he is more qualified to be POTUS.
i wonder if anyone in the press will ever ask him this question:
"would you trade your 5 years being tortured in captivity, for a quarter-century of adulthood trying to make your way in the United States as a black man?"

This is long, but for those who appreciate the River Market District it sounds a warning about proposed tall building that would damage the atmosphere of the area. I am not able to copy the pictures and drawing that accompanied the E-mail I received from Kathryn Heller at the Central Arkansas Library. It had the subject: Central Arkansas Library Needs Your Help:
A development is being proposed for the River Market District that will have an adverse impact on the Main Library campus and the new Arkansas Studies Institute. Please take a few minutes to read this document and examine the attachments. I hope you'll help us defeat this proposal. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and please pass this along to your friends.
On August 29, the Business Section of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette published a story about a proposed aloft hotel to be built adjacent to the Main Library Campus. If approved by the city, the structure will be sandwiched between the Arkansas Studies Institute and the Cox Creative Center (see attached map). The library is opposed to this project and I want to share my concern with you.
Our specific concern is that this proposal violates the height requirement of the Design Overlay District (DOD) which was created in 1996. The DOD exists to make certain that the River Market District's historic character as a small scale commercial district is not destroyed by improper development. One crucial protection is the requirement that no new building be over four stories or forty-eight feet in height. The proposed hotel, which is seven stories and at its highest point will be 90 feet tall, clearly exceeds that limitation. For your review, I have attached elevations that show the proposed building. That structure dwarfs its neighbors and threatens the architectural unity of the River Market District.
Some people have alleged that we are opposed to the project because of either its use or design. Neither statement is true. For your information I have attached an image of a six story aloft hotel in Rogers. These are contemporary buildings, but we have no objection to such style providing it follows the material, massing, roof design, and window requirements in Sec. 36-356 of the DOD. Similarly, we are not opposed to the proposed uses of the building, which are about 10% retail and 90% hotel. Our only concern is the adverse impact that any waiver of the height restrictions will have on both the district and the Main Library Campus.
While the DOD does not address the style of new buildings, it does require that, when remodeling existing buildings, the historic look of the structure be considered. Since the creation of the DOD, the library has been involved in the rehabilitation of three historic buildings - Cox, Geyer & Adams, and Budget Office. In every case we have tried our best to conform to the DOD. We are completing one new building which is a contemporary design but falls within the four story requirement of the DOD. Certainly, another story would have been useful to us, but we chose to stay within the requirements. In every case we have done our best to play by the design rules. We are only asking that these developers follow the same rules.
The River Market has been successful because the DOD has kept the small scale commercial nature of the area largely intact. That gives the district its pedestrian-friendly feel and is in keeping with the intent of the DOD. Furthermore, it is institutions like the library, with almost 400,000 visitors annually; the Clinton Library with an equal number of visitors; the Museum of Discovery; the Historic Arkansas Museum; the Old State House Museum and other cultural attractions that provide the foot traffic for the retail stores and restaurants in the district. This combination of small scale commercial architecture and the foot traffic generated from nearby public institutions works for all of us, and we should not tamper with a successful formula.
As you know, the public library began the first major development in the River Market District. Since then taxpayers have spent almost $38,000,000 developing the library campus and, in the next two years, will spend another $3,000,000 to complete the top floor of the Main Library. We have tried to be good stewards of the public's money, and we have an obligation to protect their investment in downtown Little Rock. The scale of this proposal has a negative impact on our historic buildings and significantly weakens the small scale commercial character of the district.
If you agree that this is a crucial issue, then I hope you will help us in our effort to have developers follow the rules.
You can do that by contacting the River Market District Design Review Committee and asking them not to recommend that the height variance be waived for this project, and attend their meeting on September 9, 2008, to voice your concern about the proposal. The second group that needs to hear from those who support us is the Board of Adjustment, which makes the final decision on granting the variance. Please contact them and plan on attending their meeting on September 29, 2008. (For your convenience I have attached information on both committees).
Please act now. We need your help to stop this development. Call me at 918-3037 if you have any questions.
Thank you.

The question should be modified to ask if McCain would rather spend 5 years as a POW, with a rich admiral daddy waiting on his release, than be born black.
People tend to forget, with all talk of experience, just how hard it is for a black man to get to where he is. Not McCain nor Palin nor Bush nor Cheney nor any of that crew would be in positions of power had they been born black. I doubt any of them would've even managed to graduate from college.

I am still not planning to vote for McCain because I do not agree with him on certain key issues. However, when joe boca grande biden starts talking about sending Bush to jail for what he did as president then maybe I am having second thoughts. I had some occasion to observe biden when I was in Washington and he is a joke. Not only was it obvious to me but he was an open joke to his colleagues in the Senate. If someone as hardcore as I am about not voting in November is having second thoughts then get ready for more payback. Politics is cyclical. You are on top today but sure enough you will see that pendulum shift back. If we make politics no more than a payback system that sends people to jail because you didn't agree with their politics then you will end this republic.

From our "It Needs To Be Said" file:
Two hillbillys were driving down a country road one day and one of them says to the other..."You see that big oak tree out in the middle of that pasture!?"...."I made love for my first time under that tree....but the problem arose when HER PARENTS walked up and caught us in the act!"
The other hillbilly said to his friend...."Oh no!what did they say to you!?"
And the hillbilly replied back to his friend...."Well, they just said MOOOOOOO!"

I hate to interrupt this important debate talk -- but this is extremely important.
My waffles are gone. For the past few months, I've been buying these frozen waffles and pancakes from Satan's Emporium. In fact, it was the only reason I ever bought groceries from there -- just for those waffles.
For those who don't have kids a short primer: frozen waffles are quick and easy to fix the kids kids breakfast, but they essentially refined flour and sugar. Might as well be sending the kids to school on crack.
But these waffles -- they were made from whole grains, plus they had 5g of protein, and 4g of fiber. And they were so yummy.
And then I happened to be reading the side of the box, and get this -- the waffles are made right here in Little Rock! (Well, really North Little Rock). Yes, our own little healthy bakery right here in the Capital City!
Well, Wal-Mart has stopped buying the line I guess, because I can't find them in any of the Wal-Marts. Which is possibly a good thing because I won't have any reason to set foot in there, but people -- I need those waffles!
They are called something like De Wafflebakers. And they really do rock. (They even have sweet potato pancakes that are great for dinner with a bit of roast pork and a creamy maple sauce.
Has anyone heard of this company? Seen their products anywhere but Wally World?
Thanks!

What's funny? NOBODY really wants to go! They assume they already know McCain's speech by heart since they've heard it so often. And they're not sure Carly's going to put in an appearance in her own skybox. They're not even sure if she's still here!
The only topic of genuine conversational interest over dinner (which was again comped for me, by the way) was Cindy's $300K Oscar de la Renta getup on Monday night and whether she would "tone it down tonight." You know, "for the sake of the people."
I may or may not see you later. If Carly's had the laptops removed from the skybox, we can forget it.

Strange, your point is well taken about the Vichy Democrats and the fascist Republicans (my words, not yours). They both forsook the American people and that goes a long way in explaining the 24 % approval rating of our commander in chief and the 18 % approval rating of Congress.
But please keep in mind the neo-con Republicans were in control of the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch of government when 9/11 occurred and when the invasion of Iraq took place.
Both the Executive and Legislative branches have war powers as provided by the Constitution. Madison fully expected Congress to use their powers to rein in the commander in chief. Expressing his views on these powers, Madison wrote, "The constitution supposes, what the History of all Governments demonstrates, that the Executive in the branch of power most interested in war, and most prone to it. It has accordingly with studied care, vested the question of war in the Legislature."
The "decider" told "60 Minutes" that knows Congress can vote against his plan to send in 20,000 additional troops, "but I've made my decision and we're going forward.."
Of course, the oft quoted comments by Herman Goering at Nuremberg prison about a leader taking a nation to war is easy is well known. Congress can use its power to of the purse to end a war. But cutting of financing is a drastic step and one that members of Congress are relunctant to take, because it can look like a refusal to support the troops that the commander in chief has ordered into combat zones. Congress has the power to pass laws that set terms of military engagement. Whether it would be wise to Congress to do this is debatable. But Congress should never leave all the war power with the person "most interested in war, and most prone to it."
My answer would be to replace the members of Congress quickly, in both parties and certainly sanitize the Oval Office. This republic deserves nothing less than this.

"Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.
According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go.
Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support for her, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job."

Tonight was very anti-climatic. McCain could have just came on for a few minutes after the well produced intro video and then called it a night.
The polls that show an even race will probably take a few days before they begin to reflect that Obama is again ahead of McCain by quite a large margin.
The commentators are still gushing about Palin and almost appologetically slipping McCain into their discussion...as if they are sorry they left the old man out of the discussion.

"Limo to Nowhere!"
God, what a night!
There IS a God and she works in mysterious ways. As my Republican hostesses and I piled into our limo outside Minneapolis' Grand Hotel for the 35 minute drive to St. Paul for McCain's speech, we turned on TV and realized, too late, he was about to address the convention. We would miss most of it. Feigning deep regret, we decided to pour a round of drinks for the eight of us and watch McCain's speech.
"Carly's going to think we're so rude," someone said, referring to our skybox hostess.
"She's not even here. Don't worry about it," our already well-oiled doyenne reassured, sipping the first of four more scotches in one hour.
Not wanting to miss a thing, I pulled out my tiny digital recorder (which I carry everywhere since I'm involved in a lawsuit with my ex-).
It was dish from here to eternity. Or St. Paul and back, anyway.
I haven't had so much fun in the back seat of a limo since my high school prom.
Seven inebriated well-heeled Republican women and one undercover Arkansas Democrat socialite.
The LCD TV is built into the bar panel behind the limo driver's seat.
"Oh, my god - what's that?" It's a quick shot of a protester in the balcony with a "McCain Voted Against Vets" sign, about to be busted by security.
Now, suddenly, the giant LCD screen behind McCain onstage displays a giant field of green corn waving in the breeze - dwarfing the already height-challenged nominee while he quotes from the Declaration of Independence. I get the "amber waves of grain" reference, but I'm thinking green isn't amber and this looks like an outtake from "Oklahoma" in Todd-AO in 1955 which I did NOT see in original release.
"Oh, my god - what's THAT!" It's another quick shot of the protester being led out to be shot.
"That's the liberal media for you. They shouldn't even show that."
Now McCain is saying, "I've fought the big spenders," and grinning and giggling at his own remark. I'm thinking: "Big spenders? 'Sweet Charity?' Show tune references? Oh, no!"
But I'm right. Now John McCain is saying, "Change is coming!" I KNOW it's the campaign slogan but it's also straight out of "Hair" and every other "inspirational" Broadway musical ever since! Can this BE?
Yes, because his next reference is to "Les Mis!" "What you fight for is the real test."
Who knew McCain speechwriter Mark Salter was a show queen!
Just as I'm wondering if the limo has entered a parallel reality where McCain has entered himself into a trivia contest in a gay bar, it's over.
"I fight for Bill and Sue Neeby," he says. "I fight for Jake and Toni Wimmer." I don't know these unfortunately-surnamed Americans nor do I care about their sentimentalized stories. Something's said about Toni's five children and I'm thinking McCain ought to be introduced to the Duggars.
But now we're at the Xcel Center in St. Paul. We vote to stay in the limo to watch the rest of McCain's speech and continue drinking, rather than miss one electrifying word by going through security and getting to Carly's skybox.
By now, the applause for McCain's tired catch-phrases is more and more robotic and less and less enthusiastic. Fewer than half the floor reflexively jumps up every time McCain hammers home one of Salter's punch-lines, preferring to remain in their seats and wave signs and look at their watches.
Oh. My. God. The close-up of little Piper Indy Palin is utterly terrifying! She is everything Dr. Winona Tharpe described (see link on my name) only now more like a female Damien from "The Omen."
The tireder McCain gets (did anybody think to schedule nap time?) the more he slurs the word "President". "When I'm Present . . ." - which I'm thinking is a metaphor for something disturbing.
Even Sarah Palin's applause is now perfunctory in her reaction shots, and she glances around to see if anybody notices her or cares anymore.
We've been sitting here in the limo fifteen minutes when it's mutually decided we turn around and head back for the hotel in Minneapolis and have another round of drinks rather than miss one moment of McCain's finest hour.
Perfect timing, because here comes the fear mongering. Al Qaeda . Iran. Russia. "International lawlessness that threatens the world and the peace and security of America." Just as I'm glad I'm wearing Depends, McCain calms me in a voice suitable for a child with nightmares, "But I'm not afraid of them: I'm prepared for them."
THAT'S a relief.
"I will reach out my hand [gestures by actually reaching out hand: that's the level of rehearsal prep] to anyone to get this country moving again."
Now comes the POW story. At length. Concluding with a reference to "God" - and a big grin for no discernable reason since it's not a pretty story.
Finally, McCain's rousing Nuremberg rally homage (from show tunes to THIS?).
"Fight with me! Fight! Fight! Fight! Stand up! Stand up and fight!"
As thousands of fat Republicans strain to stand up, the Xcel Center is filled with the consummate hickdom of country star John Rich's "Raisin' McCain," whose aggressively defensive hillbilly lyrics reaffirm the Republicans' simplistic we're-right-and-you're-not positions with lyrics like, "you can git on the train or git outta the way," and "He stayed strong, stayed extra long til they let all the other boys out. Now we've got a real man with an American plan."
Which for some reason struck me as yet ANOTHER unfortunate metaphor for the Republican Party: their preoccupation with phallic size, boys and gays.
It's been a fascinating few days mingling in the realm of The Other, but I can't wait to get back to Little Rock and reality.
Really.
"Oh, Auntie Em, there's no place like home!"

CP: "I notice that the CBS poll that gave Obama his eight-point bounce is now back dead-even. " The media all want everyone to continue to always think that the race is dead-even. That keeps their ratings up. It's just like when the sports folks want a close game to keep people watching and keep the advertising revenue up. No difference with the entertainment/news divisions. They will always report the numbers most likely to keep you watching.
National polls don't mean anything in a Presidential election. Just ask Al Gore. All that matters is the state-by-state electoral college tally. This one's updated daily:
http://www.electoral-vote.com/
The other thing to remember is that statistically, the national polls will more likely tend toward a more equal contest than the state-by-state ones. (Just ask Al Gore again...) The differences tend to be less dramatic with the larger numbers.
The URL above currently projects Obamma 298 McCain 213 with 13 votes tied (VA). It's an interesting site worth monitoring and a more accurate way to keep up with the race.

Glorious report Norma! I hope your limo didn't run over one of the 200 protesters that were busy smashing the cop's billy clubs with their faces. I hope you'll share the contents of your mini-tapey when you get back to LR.
I had to dip into the dog tranquilizers to make it thru McCain's 2 hour closing speech about kicking some evil Republican ass when he gets back to DC. Hope your iPod can see Tom Home Depot Duct Tape Ridge calling him John Bush, I mean John McCain, on the handy link I've provided at my name.
God Speed John Bush......

Well, Sarah Palin's bump (I'm speaking politically, not reproductively) from her last night's speech seems short-lived, as more and more people familiarize themselves with her.
Not only do we have DBI's link, above, which is required reading . . .
But now THIS, from Gloria Steinem in the L.A. Times.

Mr Republican sentenced, again, to four year prison term.
Notice how the NYT is showing favor. They never mention that the criminal was a long and active member of the Republican Party, an officer in the National
Young Republicans nor is the name of Ralph Reed, the ultimate criminal, ever mentioned....
on my name.

Keep running against Bush if you want to lose the election.
Heres some free advice - Bush isn't running and people aren't buying the lie that McCain is Bush the 3rd.
I mean it looks like an obvious attack for the Democrats this year, but they risk doing what Hillary did - Assuming that they have the election all wrapped up.
I mean it should be advantage Democrat this year, end of a second term republican (unpopular at that), Usually sentiment inevitably swings the other way. But McCain has never been a "tote the line" republican. To his own credit and his detriment in the senate sometimes, so people are not buying this bush 3rd term crap. Last night he wrestled "change" away from Obama by citing incident after incident where he and Palin have actually done so where Obama just talks a good game.Believe me regardless of what you think of McCain or Palin that message that they are actually the reformers worked.
The latest polls indicate that McCain has also convinced people that this experience discussion has weakened Obama.
McCain really has changed this game, his nomination of Sarah Palin has turned it from advantage democrat to a level playing field. It was brilliant.
Obama should ignore Sarah, any discussion between him and her is likely to once again show how upside down the Democratioc ticket is. He should try to remind people that he is the one who represents change. He is also going to have to get specific.
I fear though that his arrogance in not picking Clinton as his running mate also means that he will continue stubbornly running against a person who is not running - Bush. If he had picked Clinton I would have told you that this race was over for Republicans.
We'll see what happens - it should be exciting to watch.

>>God....remember that speech Clinton gave years ago that went on and on and on forever.........suddenly I'm reminded of it. <<
He needs to learn to bite his lip or something because he doesn't even measure up to the awful Clinton and is a joke next to the good Clinton.
Pathetic, pandering, meandering, stupid speech. This next to his VP pick makes me positive he is senile...

Cato, don't know if Jazzy has electricity or not, but most of HS business district is up and running - but still a few thousand homes in the dark. We didn't lose power at all, but son and dau-in-law did and moved in with me for a few days. They are hoping to go home today if power on. It was a mess over here...

Those waffles and pancakes are really good -- I just wonder why they don't get as much attention as our other local food producers like J&M Cheese straws or Brent and Sams.

CJ, I can personally promise you that Democrats are going to handle this election like it's D-Day and McCain-Palin are the cliffs we have to scale. Knowing how proficient the Republicans are at stealing elections, you'll not find any lazy Democrats thinking we'll be coasting to victory in the fall.
Though McCain and Palin are throw-away candidates you use when you know you have no chance of winning, because of the finely honed vote stealing machine known as the RNC, even a dead Republican has a good shot at winning office. You'll find in the coming days that no rock will go unturned, no punch will go unanswered and every advantage will be used to bury McCain-Palin. The gloves are off!
