You know it is really ironic. You trash Huckabee at every opportunity. You equate him with nothing short of a moron. However, when it serves your purposes you elevate him, temporarily, to someone to listen to. I am not voting for McCain but I thought he was smart to do what he did. His number went up directly after he made this decision. Only time will bear witness to whether this was smart or not. I do believe that McCain does things because he believes it is the right thing to do whatever the consequences. That is typical of fighter pilots. Something that most of the people who participate in this blog would not understand.

St.Petersburg Times and ......(as you read, please read next to last paragraph closely)
"Here we'll look at McCain's statement that Obama received the second-most campaign contributions from Fannie Mae.
The source for this data is the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which has compiled a list of which political leaders received the most money from employees of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Obama's campaign cites this source to back up its claim that John McCain has received more than $2-million from big oil.
On the Freddie and Fannie question, it as McCain said: Obama is No. 2 on the list, with $126,349, right after Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, who had $165,400.
But the list requires a few notes of explanation.
Corporations cannot give to candidates, so the center's list adds up contributions from Fannie and Freddie employees and their families. Obama has received a lot of money during his presidential campaign, though, and Fannie and Freddie don't make his list of top 20 companies. (The top three companies with employees donating to Obama are Goldman Sachs, University of California, and Citigroup, according to the center.)
The New York Times looked at contributions from Fannie and Freddie's boards of directors and lobbyists, who are technically not employees. That analysis found Fannie and Freddie-related contributors gave $169,000 to John McCain and his related committees, compared with $16,000 to Obama and his related committees.
Nevertheless, the center's information does reflect which candidates are getting the most money from Fannie and Freddie employees. There are other ways to parse the campaign finance numbers, but McCain is correct when he says Obama got the second-most money on a list compiled by a respected, nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog. He would have been more accurate if he would have noted that he was talking about Fannie and Freddie employees. We rate his statement Mostly True."

It's too early to draw any conclusions about McCain's decision. If the credit markets suddenly freeze up because of action/inaction by Congress, and a hundred banks fail this weekend, the debate on foreign policy may not be of primary interest.

McCain is showboating. He has previously and publicly announced he knows little about economics. Why should he attend if he doesn't understand what is going on? It's showboating, plain and simpe. MSNBC reported that constituent mail is running 100:1 against Bush's bailout
for the Have Mores. Additionally, chairs of banking and commerce reported that Obamasambo
has been checking in regularly with the committees on progress. McCain never contacted any of
them, not even within his party until he did his grandstand of "suspending" his campaign.
Over where cash talks and bullshit walks Obamasambo is leading McBush by 21 points. It's not a
poll, it's a market. On my name then you choose graph or price history. That market has been running since 1988 and has never failed to predict correctly.

WeirdLove, everything I see (commentary, informal polls, etc.) say that McCain if filling the role of drama queen with his behavior.
Did he really suspend the campaign? Not hardly.
Did he inject politics into the negotiations? You betcha.
Like somebody said, he's behind in the fourth quarter so the thing to do is fake the injury.
As for myself, I say no bailout for the greedy bas**rds, take our lump or look at the problem a little closer, not rush in because the Boy Blunder says we have or better yet! Sell Alaska back to Russia for $700 Billion!

Why would you emotionally beef up the story of how your wife was killed in a car accident? Isn't it horrific enough? Biden apparently has been saying for years that the truck driver who killed his wife in an accident (who has since died himself) was drunk. He wasn't.
Since his vice presidential nomination, Joe Biden's 2007 statement that a "guy who allegedly ... drank his lunch" and drove the truck that struck and killed his first wife and daughter has gained national media traction.
Alcohol didn't play a role in the 1972 crash, investigators found. But as recently as last week, the syndicated TV show Inside Edition aired a clip from 2001 of Biden describing the accident to an audience at the University of Delaware and saying the truck driver "stopped to drink instead of drive."
The senator's statements don't jibe with news and law enforcement reports from the time, which cleared driver Curtis C. Dunn, who died in 1999, of wrongdoing.
"To see it coming from [Biden's] mouth, I just burst into tears," Dunn's daughter, Glasgow resident Pamela Hamill, 44, said Wednesday. "My dad was always there for us. Now we feel like we should be there for him because he's not here to defend himself."

I'm glad to see the talks collapse. First, you don't solve a problem of this magnitude with some knee-jerk bill that gets rammed down to Congress ala' 9/11. Sometimes, just sometimes, things need to be thought out. Second, you can't trust the administration that grew this problem to solve it.
The world isn't going to end because the federal government didn't bail out these companies.

Great song Doc! Streisand is one of my favorites.
Every news report I've seen said that McCain injected politics into the bailout by just being there. It was just a photo-op for him--he had nothing to contribute.
From Washington Monthly:
"On Friday, Sept. 19, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson unveiled a $700 billion bailout proposal.
And on Tuesday, Sept. 22, John McCain couldn't commit to the proposal, because he hadn't read it. Seriously.
...We are, just to clarify, talking about a three-page document. It would have taken McCain a few minutes to read. But despite the seriousness of the situation, McCain hadn't bothered.
Taking this one step further, on Tuesday, Sept. 22, McCain hadn't read the Paulson plan, but on Thursday, Sept. 24, McCain announced that he's dropping everything to work on a bailout plan on the Hill."

In Vietnam, the NVA would routinely use civilians as shields or they would deliberately set up an op or mortar near a village so that you had no choice but to shoot civilians. The same thing happened in the Sudan. Our enemies know who their friends are in the US. They simply give you plenty of ammunition to hurt our own troops.

September 25, 2008 10:55 PM
McCain was asked to be present by Paulson because he saw that the plan did not have support among Republicans. He needed McCain to try and get that support to ensure that the plan was passed. Many of the constituents of the Republicans in the House were telling them that they did not like the idea of bailing out bad investments and would take it out on the House members if they supported the bailout.

McCain was no fighter pilot.
He was on a bomb run to destroy a power plant in downtown Hanoi.
The civilians that pulled him out of Lake Hanoi nearly beat him to death before the military could even get to him.
This was part of McNamera's "Operation Rolling Thunder" which by McNamera's own estimate killed over a thousand civilians per week for over 2 years.
US estimates 52,000 - 185,000 dead civilians. Vietnamese estimates MUCH higher.

Dear Lord,
It's DBI again and I know we don't much like each other, but I thought I better ask for just one more favor. You see, we have a guy here on earth whose running for President. Though I think he's been a little shit all his life, he may have once been a good guy. But now Lord....he's old and sick and he's making a real horse's ass out of himself. He's become a joke and everyone's laughing at him.
I don't think he knows what he's doing any more Lord. I think his old brain is melting and running into his left jaw. He's like the woman across the hall from Ma at the nursing home. She'd say something one minute and then contradict herself in the next breath. Her Depends was full all the time too.....poor Stinky.
So Lord, back to this guy. He's lost the ability to tell the truth or at least lost the ability to remember his lies....he's just FK'ing up something terrible. He's harming the reputation of other old soldiers by appearing to be wacky all the time. Lord...I know some old soldiers that are almost 100 and they're not wacky...but now people might think they are cause this McCain is talking crap all the time. Today he thought he was Norma Desmond and he raced all over the East Coast looking to do his closeup. Someone's going to have to tell the poor old man that Mr. DeMille has been dead since the 50s.
So....could you help him out. Today is gonna be a rough day on the old guy no matter which way he plays it. If he doesn't debate he'll look chickenshit and if he does debate he's going to say things that will be real embarrassing. He might even grab his sunken chest and die right there on the stage. He's old and he's sick and he's confused. Plus he's got this air-head bimbo running with him and she's into teenage sex and snakes in church and witchdoctors and all and if he dies the idiot Republicans will put her at the top of the ticket and probably put Limbaugh in as VP and then when they steal their 3rd election we'll wind up with Crazy Mama in the White House....and just...could you help us out one more time Lord.
Oh and I forgot the stock market may cash today and all the rich folks will go broke and then they'll move over to the poor side of town and bug the living shit out of me. So as you can see.....your chillen gots lots 'O problems and Friday is going to be a bitch.
Now I'm on your side....I don't like this torture at all! So remember that...we do have one thing in common. But help that old man and keep us safe from the snake-handling bimbo and if the market falls please don't let it fall on me cause I'm broke and I'm still trying to be a good American and a good person even if I don't go to church unless there's someone in a coffin. You're truly, DBI

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TODAY!
The Republicans are playing the credit crisis to perfection.
What stalled the agreement yesterday? The conservative House Republicans, with McCain as a silent backer, threw in a new plan where a plan, in essence had already been agreed upon.
Why? They claimed they weren't consulted and that the first plan lacked protection for the mortgage holders.
What will happen today? The media will be encouraged to raise the level of fear of financial collapse and play to the WaMu bankruptcy. The Republican "talkers" will extol McCain's leadership by suspending his campaign and hurrying to Washington to solve the crisis and that he is working the phones continually to get a consensus. After 2:30 P.M. or 3:00 P.M., just in time for photo ops and a private jet flight to Oxford, Mississippi, an agreement will be reached. Senator McCain will walk on stage, slightly late, to take advantage of the free television exposure and try to appear to have solved the bail-out crisis. "Fait accompli!" A McCain's poll numbers stop dropping for a while.
Now let's stop and set the stage for a very, very clever stage management of the crisis for political gain. One of the most successful and least known Republican tactics was the negotiation with the Iranian terrorists to hold the Tehran Embassy hostages until six minutes after Reagan's inauguration day to hide the successful negotiations of Carter's State Department (Algiers Accords) and make the release seem due to new President Reagan.
So what does that have to do with the credit crisis, bail-out and Thursday afternoon explosion of an agreement? The McCain campaign, admittedly losing ground because of the sudden, frightening, Bush administration failure and request of a $700 billion bail-out plan. "Suspends his campaign, although ads continue to run and McCain representatives continue to appear on all the news shows, to go to Washington and lead in the crisis! This focuses the limelight on McCain and away from his running mate's incredible gaffes in the Couric interviews.
Plus the Republicans on the Hill have been desperately trying to distance themselves from anything Bush or Cheney. So the House Republicans, explode the hammered out agreement, and gain by appearing to condemn the Bush administration, but don't totally risk collapse since the agreement can be worked out this afternoon. And the delay will be worked to the advantage of McCain and the Hill Republicans! Welcome to Lee Atwater campaign tactics version 3.0 or 4.0.
Don't believe me, but compare this prediction with today's events. . . .
