Palin speaks

How bad was Charles Gibson's interview with Sarah Palin? So bad that the local ABC affliate in NYC used a clip of him asking this smoking fastball: Can you look the country in the eye and say you are qualified to be president? Shazam. Sarah said she could. It must not have gotten much tougher. Gibson chose to lead his nightly news segment with that same zinger. And to close with her rehearsed answer about how she wasn't presuming to speak for God when the camera caughter her linking God's will and the invasion of Iraq in a church talk.

But there was the little matter of suggesting we might need to go to war with Russia if it acted too aggressively toward a former Soviet state. TPM notes that Republican Lincoln Chaffee called her a "cocky whacko" this week.

The opening session on the national ABC newscast was a blizzard of Palin words, mostly "Islamic terrorism" and other jargon. White noise. Any fair reading is that she's a parrot, and not a very good one when it comes to depth on the issues. But the questioning wasn't designed to illustrate that. Gibson did gently show that she had not a clue what the "Bush doctrine" was -- beyond going after the evildoers whenever, wherever, with approval of other governments or not.

The rest of the media isn't so sanguine toward this race as the Republican-friendly Gibson, who wants to protect his capital gains tax cut and is friendly toward those who think as he does. Howard Kurtz sees anger out there.

Comments

I think that the statement of this election that really made me decide to support obama/biden was boca grande joe's comment that maybe hillary would have been a better choice for vice president. Yea, that astute observation has given me such an inspiration to support that ticket.

Howard Kurtz has got it right: the anger is palpable. Everywhere. Even raht cheer in Little Rock, Ark. Kane Webb closed his AD-G column this morning with these words: "(N)o matter how many times a McCain/Palin surrogate tells the press to stick it, and no matter how liberating that must feel for a professional flack, Sarah Palin is going to have to answer for herself. She might not sit down with Time magazine, but the media aren't the only ones with serious questions. We just think we are."

I trust her judgement over Obama's or Biden's.

The Russian's know that we aren't going to challenge them militarily. They know that they have a blank check in Europe. They tested us and we ignored them. Europe ignored them. Now what kind of message do you think that sends to them? Also, what kind of message do you think that sends to China? It is not Russian that I am most concerned about. It is China. We will fight them or we will get out of Asia with our national tail between our legs. What will follow will not be pleasant.

I am shocked that Max was dissatisfied with the interview.

>>Gibson did gently show that she had not a clue what the "Bush doctrine" was -- beyond going after the evildoers whenever, wherever, with approval of other governments or not.<<

And do you think Bush has any idea of what the Bush Doctrine is? Bush is, was, and shall be pimp, a college cheerleader. This is Cheney+Neo-Con Doctrine. Bush hasn't a clue. Never did, never will.

Palin playing it perfect. Lots of fluff for the great unread, just an image to dangle out for the faithful with some dog-whistling to go with it. She's gonna play well for the base she is targeted to energize.
And yes, Charlie, millions of dupes believe this war is God's Plan. Bush told them so, Hagee told them so.

caughter

I've only seen the part where Gibson asked Palin about the "Bush Doctrine." Anybody who thinks that was a homerun is an idiot. She started by trying to be cute and say "in what sense, Charlie," thinking that her being ignorant of foreign affairs was going to really be funny. When she realized that he wasn't going to yuk it up with her and provide cover, she gave some bullshit answer that didn't come close.

You could sense that that was the moment when she first realized that her and Bullwinkle weren't in Alaska anymore.

Just tap those snow boot heels together three times, dearie. It will all be over soon.

I know there's some distrust of Gibson in these parts, but I do have to say he kept after her (indeed, gently) on a couple of questions that she was simply not answering (though there were several others she evaded without follow-ups). The one that struck me the most was when he asked her if the United States should support Israel if it decided to attack another Middle Eastern nation because it deemed a threat was there. Palin said "we cannot second-guess Israel's right to protect itself," or something very close to that. That was a statement, not an answer. Gibson pushed the question two more times, got the same statement.

The biggest failing I saw in the part of the interview that was aired came at the end when he discussed the issue of "we're on a mission from God" (if the Blues Brothers will forgive me). I think she talked around that question, as well, but during the process she said, quite plainly, that we cannot know God's will. Which made me as a journalist want to immediately ask her, "Why then did you say that it was God's will that the natural gas pipeline you supported be built?" To miss that obvious follow-up was irresponsible.

ABC is spreading the totality of Gibson's interviews with Palin all over its schedule between tonight and tomorrow night. I'd much rather they pre-empted some moronic prime time comedy or drama and put it all in a single hour-long special. That would've served the public much better, instead of trying to boost the network's ratings by showing a little bit here, a little bit there.

Here ya go, Ark blogger, click on Cato

Look, some of you on this blog are going to be critical whatever she answers. She is a conservative and conservative answers bug you. Just call a spade a spade.

My thoughts on the thread thus far:

1. Just because Gibson didn't show his rear as you would have Max doesn't mean he didn't conduct a good interview.

2. Getting called a "wacko" by the former RINO of RINOs, Lincoln (the fact that he has this name pisses me off to no end) Chafee is the equivalent of Harry Reid stating that he can't stand John McCain--it's a sign you're doing something right.

3. LWood is content along with the other lefty parrots on this site to posit that Pres. Bush is clueless. You're the one who's clueless if you believe that. Whether you agree with him or not, this tinfoil hat theory that he is a party boy puppet of Cheney/Halliburton is getting very thin. Seriously, you guys remind me of the 9/11 conspiracy nuts that crashed Bill Maher's show. Today marks the seventh anniversary of the last terrorist attack on American soil. No one in late 2001 would've believed we were safe. We (yes we) owe President Bush our thanks.

4. "Caughter"--does that rhyme with "laughter?"

I saw on TV where Barack Obama, Joe Biden and John McCain were in New York City today observing the 7th anniversary of 9/11. But where was Sarah Palin? Nowhere in sight. Why does she hate America so much that she was not in New York City today?

Stop- the above is but a single example of the hate state Republicans would be heaping on Obama or Biden if one or both of them had not gone to New York City today in observance. It's the kind of mind set that is irrational at best, frightening at worst.

Republicans long ago proved they were willing to say and do anything to win elections. Illegally disenfranchise voters? That's okay in their book. Put a U.S. Senate race at the bottom of the ballot violating federal law if it could improve the chances of the Republican candidate getting elected (see New York Times, Mississippi)? Sho 'nuff, honey child. Spout flagrant and easy to disprove lies and, even when caught, continue to spout the same lies? Why not, it works.

Republicans are running the youngest ticket in history- an 8-year old, McCain, and a 44-year old, Palin. The original John McCain perished in 2000 when George W. Bush and his Rovian minions took that McCain apart piece by piece. This new McCain is now 8-years old and with brand new positions on every issue compared to the original McCain- from no to yes on torture, from no to yes on robbing the treasury for billionaire tax cuts, and on and on.

The Forked Tongue Express just keeps moving on down that track.

How many of you would vote for a muslim for your president?
This is what obama said,
NEWS BRIEF: "Oops! Obama says 'my Muslim faith' ", Chicago Sun Times, September 8, 2008' You're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith', Obama said.
obama is a snake in the grass. A liar, deceiver, prevacator is he.

I told you from the start that obama would not get as many votes as Mondale got when he ran for president against Reagan.

God for very good reasons has caused nations to war. He has in the past and I humbly say I believe He will do it in the future. He does it to make us know that he is God and that we must confess Him Lord of Lord and king of kings.
A, any, nation that does not confess Him Lord will, no doubt, get the same punishment. It is only fair since he created everything seen and unseen.

Repent and believe in Him. There will no peace apart from our confessing Him as Lord, Jesus is Lord!

I'd vote for a Muslim in a heartbeat if she/he was qualified to lead this country. Religion is not an issue to me. Race is not an issue to me. Sex is not an issue to me.
But, just so you know chas, Barack Obama is a Christian.

Cato - Thanks for the link. I don't believe that adults should be restricted on what we read or listen to - with the exception of child pornography where an actual child is victimized. So far, Tipper Gore has proven to be more of an real advocate of censorship than Palin.

The main reason I support McCain/Palin is on national security and foreign policy issues. I'm not worried that a vice president Palin would remove library books, but it is a legitimate question to ask her in an interview or during the debate.

I'd rather have a peace loving Muslim than a neo con, war loving fundie retard.

BTW Obama is a christian, can you say the same for Grandpa?????

GO TO CHURCH TO VOTE FOR A PASTOR, NOT THE VOTING BOOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might re-think attacking Palin about her comments on Russia, because her position (and McCain's) is the same as Obama's. Both major candidates want Ukraine and Georgia in NATO, which would mean a treaty committment to go to war if either one is attacked. Personally I think it's a huge mistake to expand NATO any further, but Obama and McCain are singing from the same hymnal on that issue.

Hey Sound Policy,

Gov. Palin had a pretty darn good excuse for not being in NY for the 9/11 remembrance. She was in Alaska saying goodbye to her eldest son Track and his unit, who are shipping out to Iraq today. He enlisted one year ago today. I'd say she spent the day pretty well and showed how much she loves America. Care to share with us what you did today to comemorate 9/11???

I rocked in my old chair and dreamed idiotmoron was reading, *My Pet Goat,* to me before

he ran to his hidey hole in Neb. while the US was being blown to bits.

Some prez huh??

jazzy - It's puzzling that you would want to be known as a person who uses deplorable slurs like "retard". People born with developmental disabilities have enough challenges in life without that sort of language being used in political debates.

"Care to share with us what you did today to comemorate 9/11?" FromThePines

Why, FromThePines, I did exactly what our appointed president W instructed us to do. I went shopping to keep the economy from getting any worse under Republican leadership than it already is. What, pray tell, did you do?

Incidentally, FromThePines, the reason I won't be voting for McCain or Palin is fairly simple. Having served 4 years on a launch crew of what was then the most powerful nuclear (not 'NUK-u-lar', W & Ms. Palin, 'NOOK-li-uhr', now say it again, 'NOOK-li-uhr'- very good!) missile in the U.S. arsenal, I do not want either a hot-headed bully like McCain or a neophyte like Palin capable of starting a nuclear war and destroying life on the planet. Think they couldn't stumble into such a mess? Don't kid yourself.

Vote for you or a Mohammedin, eh, Chas V?

The Mohammedin in a nano-second, The Mohammedin might be tolerant and intelligent, I already know your qualifications.

One more thing, FromThePines- reread the second paragraph of my first post, and it may finally sink in that I was saying only hateful Republicans (yes, I know 'hateful Republicans' is an oxymoron) say such stupid things and question the patriotism like that of those they disagree with or are running against.

As a rule we Democrats always have one arm tied behind our backs because we try to fight fair and Republicans live to fight dirty.

"Gov. Palin had a pretty darn good excuse for not being in NY for the 9/11 remembrance. She was in Alaska saying goodbye to her eldest son Track and his unit, who are shipping out to Iraq today."

How DARE this strumpet put her family before this country. Why does she hate America so much?

Soundpolicy: Please excuse my correcting you in public, but "hateful Republicans" is not an oxymoron, it is a redundancy.

Kinda like "overworked teacher" or "underpaid minister."

"Compassionate conservative" is an oxymoron.

Kinda like our "intelligent president."

docholliday I would not want your vote so shove it where the sun don't shine.
Voting for a muslim is a vote against Christianity. They won't mix.
I think it Impossible to believe a muslim could be a christian..

Kinda like 'choice' meaning only one thing----abortion.

Chasv said ""Oops! Obama says 'my Muslim faith' "

Exactly. It was an "Oops". He misspoke in answering a question and went back immediately and corrected himself. Everyone makes a mistake speaking on occasion. Go watch the video on YouTube and get your facts straight.

Race, religion or gender do not influence my choice for President. Obviously you think everyone is as biased as you.

"docholliday I would not want your vote so shove it where the sun don't shine." chasv

chasv, you sound like the temperamental John McCain. The hate's kinda dripping out there, bud.

SkyPilot- I stand respectfully corrected re oxymoron vs. redundancy. I can live with that.

Kinda like 'choice' meaning only one thing----abortion.

Hmm...didn't Bristol make a choice that wasn't abortion?

arkblogger......I gave birth to a profoundly deaf daughter so don't throw any smears at
me. I have devoted my life to the deaf community and they are not uptight or PC.
I reserve *retard* for repugs.....not anyone else who is not deserving of the tag.

Choice means more than one option.. A woman has a choice to keep the baby, have it and give it up for adoption, or abort it. It is a personal decision that the government has no right to interfere in. Choice does not always mean abortion. Every situation and every woman is different and decisions are made that do NOT always result in an abortion.

Great video Hugh. My point exactly only made with much more humor!

jazzy - It's regrettable that you choose to employ offensive slurs in the political discussion, but you have the First Amendment right to do so. And I have the right to criticize your use of the slurs, and will continue to do so if you insist on continuing to use them.

Be assured that people who were born with developmental disabilities, and their families, and the people who devote their lives to helping them, find your use of the term "retard" offensive, just as the phrase "deaf and dumb" is offensive to the hearing impaired. Those insensitive terms have no place in a civilized discussion.

Drugs are bad. "Just say no." Nancy Reagan was so right. And so simple.

Cindy McCain? More complex. Our would-be First Lady's "victory" over her drug-addled past is not quite the inspiring Oprah moment she claims.

Rather, it's riddled with lies, fraud, deceit, forgery, theft, ruined lives and high-priced attorneys to keep her out of a 20-year prison sentence.

Here, at my clicky name, are just the facts from public records.

Pop a Percocet and enjoy.

WTF???

I lose IQ points just reading this lunacy!

Please never post here again.

I don't know what it is about Assembly of God women who privately dress like hookers, whose babies have MORE babies out of wedlock, and who want to be POTUS, but think Earth is 6,000 years old and want to tell American women what they can do with their bodies and abolish women's choices based on their religion and lie about bridges to nowhere and pork-barrel spending and think wars and Alaskan pipelines are "God's will" and want to ban books in the library and fib to your face and stuff yet proudly pose like this.

I'm all clicky.

I don't know what it is about Assembly of God women<<

Yippers they shor have change ma'am. I recall being dragged to one of those places when I was a kid, back when Ike was president. It was NO fun, not even the blues-rock-boogie styled gospel songs they sang with electric guitars and drum set accompaniment. It was all fear and shouting, talking in tongues ( I heard some doozies), instant healings, casting out a few demons and foot washing. Women could not have their hair length above their shoulders and any LIPSTICK and rogue was strictly prohibited. One could never teach sunday school nor be a deacon should one have more than one marriage, no matter if one had been widowed. Just a few fine points ya know to keep the sect pure.

Of course during Ike's day nobody had sex anyways, nobody. Fortunately my dad rescued me from that place and I found a church home with the Methodists. At least they liked to talk about fishing.

There were no Palins. Anyone who appeared like that would have been driven away. But due to the lord's grace and changing styles we know have a sexy momma-grandma from a ASS.ofGod church running for the second highest office in U.S.A. How times have changed.
Our last Ass. Of God member was none other than A.G. Ashcroft who saw fit to have the nekked bust of a woman in the Justice Dept covered. I new he was devout. Now comes a woman would would pose for such a bust. Times change.
.

Here, finally, is why America is lost. For awhile.

From TIME magazine. (Click me)

We're the most racist, religious, bigoted, ignorant country in the world, second (perhaps) to the Islamic Middle East, and Africa and parts of the Caribbean and Asia.

We've become, in many ways, the same thing as they.

Pendulums swing, as they always do.

Someday America may regain what once we embodied. The beacon of freedom and hope we once offered the world.

Not now.

These are dark times.

These are, in fact, the "End Times" religions have prophesied.

Just not in the way they supposed.

The "battle" is between facts, education, knowledge . . . and superstition (religion). "Elites" and "Dunces." We're supposed to buy that Americans are somehow "proud" of being "dunces." That's what Republicans are selling, and always have.

The internet is anathema to superstition.

It's a global "mind" of resources and facts -- and misinformation too.

Fine.

The internet demands that users exercise their minds to research and source what they find there.

The internet requires curiosity and thought and questioning, in other words.

Anathema to the fascism and power of religion and politics, which rely on unquestioning adherence and conformity to authority and parroting catch-phrases (lies) as truths, when they're demonstrably NOT.

Facts and information are devastating to the fascist organizations that are religion and politics. Which is why they have historically done all they could to control dissemination of truth.

And why they're desperate to control the internet.

It's out of their control.

The game is over.

Their power will unravel slowly.

The world will be better for it.

And the "End Times" will hit exactly like they always do, for cults.

Frankly, political and religious cults long ago drank the Jim Jones kool-aid.

There really are only two kinds of people: those consumed by ignorant fear, conformity, hate and authoritarianism . . . and those who love life in all its wonder and diversity.

Same as it's always been.

Which is why I suggest you click my link.

Sarah Palin and the myth of America. TIME magazine.

An amazing article from what is, fundamentally, another right-wing media publication.

Have a nice day.

Well two thoughts....
a) AMAZING that no one in the big-bad-right-winged conspiracy of media has thought to ask the Democratic PRESIDENTIAL nominee if he is qualified to be........right PRESIDENT. But, as so many in his camp has stated, "Obama has been running a campaign for 18 months, the people have gotten to know him." So, 18 months ago when no one knew him he was not qualified and no one asked. Now, he has run a campaign for 18 months -he is qualified.

b) I wonder if Joe Biden said he would be ready to be president if Gibson would then ask him if that was arrogant? Like her or not, of course she thinks she is qualified or she would not have taken the spot. And even if she wondered if she was truly ready, she would never say so on public TV...she would be torn to shreds by that big -bad-right-winged conspiracy of media (is that headed by Olberman, Matthews, Curic, or the NYT?). So, I guess if you are a VP candidate and you say you are ready to do the job that makes you arrogant? Oh well, bottom line our VP is better qualified than the other's Pres and it is clear that everyone recognizes that.

Who in this group new what the Bush doctrine was, now be honest. George Bush keeps changing it from day to day to suit his self. I am still scared of Obama because of his ( no )experince.

One thing wrong with your rejoiner, ChasV. You posted " . . . I think it Impossible to believe a muslim could be a christian . . ."

Not think, believe. I don't and I don't think many of the readers of this blog have illusions about your ability to do the former.

Here's a item of news for you. You don't have to be ignorant or intolerant to believe in Christ.
