Some explaining to do
Brummett reacts to unhappy reader sentiments, particularly re presidential candidates. Bottom line, to oversimplify: No matter how bad any of them are, Paln is worse.

Very funny MISTER Brummett, seriously humorous. However, I do sense you are being influenced by
Christopher Hitchens. Keep it up.

Oh, I meant to add-Would MISTER Brummett or anyone care to comment on Palin's insulting convention remark that Barack Obama's campaigning is one of "self discovery" ?
One assumes if you're like Palin and your religion has handed you all the answers to personal, moral, ethical and spiritual questions there is no examination of anything. You're like a rock.....and just as dumb.

Mr. Brummett may not be a comedian, but I think he's right on the shifting mood of the voting public. They were enamored with Obama and disenchanted with the Clintons just long enough for Obama to run up an insurmountable lead in delegates, and then they got buyer's remorse too late and swung in Clinton's direction again. Obama hasn't caught fire again. As an Drew Westen who has worked with Obama in the past, said last night on PBS, Obama is wonderful when giving a speech, but when he just talks in debates, town hall meetings, and interviews, he instantly becomes Dukakis. If he doesn't learn to answer with brief, memorable statements and stop the rambling - no matter how brilliant and right he is, he will lose.
I heard this morning that 94% of Republicans now support McCain, but only 83% of Democrats support Obama. He doesn't seem to get it - IMO.

Good insights CiCi. However, I suggest we wait a few more days. I think Obama has worn his ass out in some ways. He often appears tired. This campaigning stuff is old hat to McCain, Biden, same as it was to Hillary. Obama will catch his stride before long. The R's are coming off a convention bounce. Camp Obama doesn't have a good grip on timing either. Think of the overshadowing he could have accomplished had they staged his Euro tour a few days after the R convention. Not smart.

I'll give Brummett his due...when both sides are trashing an opinion writer and/or a journalist it usually means they're doing a fair job.
I hope you're right, eLwood...so I can quit dreading another horrid November. A McSame presidency would be disastrous, but the real sickening part would be knowing that I'm living among the stupidest people on earth. When it was JUST President Shit for Brains I could pretend it was an anomaly...

From your mouth to God's ears, eLwood. Obama has to pull this off and I think he has the ability - just don't know if the word is really getting thru to him that he isn't still riding the wave.
Please, please, please be right that there are better days ahead.

>>A McSame presidency would be disastrous, <<
Well, nobody is gonna like the medicine we are gonna be forced to swallow as a result of too many years of Neo Con rule. It ain't going to be easy. This nation has serious problems even though our gdp is growing by 3%. We've got a generation of retirees on the immediate horizon and the government has spent all the money they've paid into Soc Security all these years. Don't let them fool you with the term
"ENTITLEMENT" because it's not true. Social Security is a debt, an obligation owed to qualified recipients who paid in or their dead spouses paid into a system for 25, 30, 40 or 50 years. Now they have spent the contributions building the biggest military on the face of the Earth and they tell us it's an ENTITLEMENT.
I hope enough people catch on to the lie.
Then there's our crumbling infrastructure. I was reading an investment mag today about China's new growth. Their cities have new structures, satellite controlled traffic signals, best lights, etc. We have crumbling cities and a mountain of debt. They have more sky scrapers in each of three cities than we have in our largest cities. Sewers and bridges there are new too. Walmart has fixed them up real nicely. Now if they can get it built before the U.S. dollar completely collapses they will be in the running but China's currency is closely tied to USD. China forms partnerships with foreign nations instead of conquering them then controlling their resources with military might which has cost the U.S a fortune for many decades and ill-will. China is smart enough not to spend huge amounts of its gdp
being the policeman of the world.
The next president, few are going to like. Things are going to fall apart around him or her. People are going to be angry. Their easy living will come to an end. Our food will cost much more. Not going to be a pretty nation. We will be clamoring for a national health care plan but without the personnel or facilities to provide it. Taxes will go up no matter who is president.
People will want to blame someone, that's the easy part.

No matter who gets to the oval office, nothing would be worse for this country than Obama! He's misleading, misdirected and mistaken for a caring American. McCain doesn't think before he speaks and there is absolutely nothing good to say about anyone running for the oval office, Demoncraps and Repugnants everyone. The past has nearly destroyed us and the future holds only uncertainty for the American people. The Latin Nations are starting to rebel against us in South America, the Mudslime Terrorists have been at it forever. The Chinese are trying to poison us and Russia is flexing its big ol' bear paw in our faces. Somewhere down to road of our history one to many mistakes have been made by all those people we elected to represent us. Somewhere "We the People" have been led astray by the greed and selfishness of those we hoped would keep our great nation a respected leader of nations that shows both sympathy and care for those who are less fortunate than we. Instead we are regarded as assinine fools who blunder into every one else's business. The rest of the world is realising we are such and coming to grips with the fact they may have to eliminate us because through our political errors and greediness we have become a major pain in the ass for the rest of the world. Hell, the Saudis' have even put out a "Fatwa" to kill all the Satellite and Cable TV owners for our arrogance in distributing immoral content over the airwaves. The disruption of our political ambitions from the greed of our politicians to be "rich and famous" has made us weak in appearance to the rest of the world. What better time is there than now to try to end what they say is the tyranny of US intrusion into their business and politics. Wimpy little loudmouths like Hugo Chaves think they can get away with badmouthing us, and wait, they can, we have passed to many laws through liberal ass kissing to even have our country run efficiently enough to counter their claims. We stand here so torn apart by our own hatred of our neighbors that we may appear helpless to defend ourselves against the true tyranny of this world which is, in my opinion, the loss of our freedoms through our own ignorance and ego.

One thing that should have been added to my litany above is that many of us going to feel what's like to live in a debtor nation. We have owed others much more than they owe us for about 8 years. At some point we will start to feel the results of that debt and then experience how other debtor nations live. It won't be very pleasant.

ELwood makes a good point. Both candidates can promise the moon but the winner will be dealing with a debt that is going to limit whatever they hope to accomplish. Heard yesterday that it's up to $150,000 for each American household.

We have a REAL debt of approximately $70 trillion with the acquisition of fannie and freddie. The GDP was approximately $13.2 trillion. Now you do the math. This year is the first year that baby boomers can start drawing partial social security benefits. In 2012 the first baby boomers will be eligible for FULL social security benefits. Raise taxes and you encourage a recession and business contraction. This will increase the deficit and the debt. The government will start printing more money and our bond rating will drop. China and Japan will stop buying treasury notes and financing our debt. What do you think will be next?

If you think that social security is a problem---and it is---it is nothing compared to the medicare entitlement. It was unsustainable as it was with the baby boomer factor looming but now we have added prescription benefits. With obama you get to increase that substantially with his health care proposals. We are ALL in the same boat and it is taking on a lot of water and we have NOTHING to bail with.

And who do you think has been in power most of the last 40 years, JNYJ? And if you can honestly answer that question, why would you want to reward them with 4 more years? Even the RNC thinks the party's over.....they're running the dregs of the Republican Party.
Someone asked me last night, why didn't the Republicans pick a good candidate to run with McCain and I fired back, what good Republican did they overlook? A great Republican wasn't overlooked...there are no great Republicans to choose from. If Strom Thurman was still alive at 105, the RNC would have run him this time around cause they need one to waste. Look it, they had to go to Alaska and get a hockey mom no one has ever heard of to run co-pilot for McShrimp. It's called scraping the bottom of the barrel.
I really think the polling companies and the MSM are pulling our leg again. If it was Obama 80% vs McCain at 20% the polling companies and the MSM's profits would flat-line. Their Christmas depends on keeping this a horse race for the next 50 days......there are millions on the line. As dumbed down as the American voters are these days, even they cannot be dumb enough to believe the serial liars McCain-Palin. I think Bill Clinton is right.....Obama will win handily if he can manage to stay alive to November 4th.
Just try to remember back to a time when you were hopeful and everything was looking up in America......that's what we can have next year, if we can get out the vote and have a half way honest election. Ah....to feel hopeful again! Priceless!

See, guys like DBI continue to take the bait even after they have been told that they are pursuing a sucker's play. That is why I'm not hesitant to tell you about Palin. I know that your natures won't let you stop. I was one of you at one time in my life. I know how you are and the way you think. You never learn that is why you keep losing elections.
