Bitter Harvest

Our Insider this week had the jump on news of some interest to those who commute along the Cantrell Road corridor.

It's now been confirmed that Harvest Foods is pulling out of the store in Riverdale. A news release said it declined to renew the lease at a higher rate and will move the pharmacy there to its Tanglewood store.

It is the end of what is known to one and all as the world's largest convenience store. Big stock, particularly in the beer department, and a nice selection of Latino foodstuffs. Shopper volume was light, so it was easy in and out for a better selection and lower prices than at the average stop-n-go, if not the place you'd likely do all your regular shopping.

I always wondered how they could afford to stay open. Always a good idea to check the dates on the dairy. We found cheese two months past sell by date on more than one occasion.

ARK. BLOG: Aw, come on Moxie. Cheese never expires. Just carve off the mold.

Pharmacists Bob and Melissa have made the move with the pharmacy to Tanglewood. Yay!

Not that it was great, but they did have a salad bar.

Anyone know of another in that area of town?

Hell, any milk I ever bought there went bad BEFORE the sell-by date.

Harvest Food left Hot Springs yrs ago. Last time I was in saw a roach playing on the bread

counter...........never went back.

Max is right. I used to deep six cheese, with a bit of mold, till I grew a brain and learned

to cut it off........good as new.

Related to Alltel's possible departure from the area?

Hon, don't throw out that blinky milk either -- makes the best cornbread or biscuits in town. Just another tip for the hard times ahead.
By the way, anyone know how so many of us survived childhood? If there was mold on the top of homemade jelly, we just scooped it off and enjoyed the rest. And I do mean enjoyed.
Lest you think that happened only in my family, I assure it that was not the case. Around here it took extension home economist Novelle Clark to make a lot of us folks change our scrimping ways.
Wonder if the owner of that building has another lease holder lined up. Jacking up the price might be a mistake. Same thing happened in Benton a couple of years ago and that building is still empty. Birds in hand and that sort of thing?

The whole chain may be biting the dust. Some stores have been sold and others around the state are being closed. They never recovered from money troubles a few years back and Walmart Supercenters are tough competition.

Speaking of grocery stores...Does anyone know if Walmart plans to go ahead with the Super Center at Shackleford Crossings? I read [long ago] that the Walmart at Bowman would be turned into a Walmart neighborhood market.

Bob and Melissa have been our pharmacists for over 10 years. (Bob for even longer.) We'll make the trek to their new location --- at least once a week --- to keep them. At least we're willing to buy food at the Tanglewood Harvest, something we stopped doing years ago at the Riverdale Harvest except for a few items. We shop for everything else at the Hillcrest Kroger, but Bob and Melissa are like the friendly pharmacists you used to encounter in small towns. We refuse to quit them in favor of a nearer pharmancy.

Ha! True. Don't know what I'm complaining about, really. I used to eat their sushi when they'd sell it for $.99 (Manager's special). I really will miss that place.

I've had the feeling that they were circling the drain for years. They were in serious financial trouble a few years back, and ever since they got back on their feet I've noticed that many national brands common at other stores were not availablle at HF. Can't help but assume there's some connection there.

Can't believe no one's mentioned bread pudding -- old eggs, sour milk, stale bread -- add in whatever you're going to add in and cook it. Love it. The hubster made one a while back -- with cheese instead of sugar -- omg good. I got ahold of some old King's Hawaiian Bread on special at Christmas last year and totted in white almond bark, unsweetened pre-melted baker's chocolate, nuts and a handful of leftover Hershey's Kisses... incredible dessert, lemmeetellyawhat.

Convenience store is about right. About the only time I've dropped by is if I'd been in the area for something else... and wanted a quick lunch or dinner accompaniment. The salad bar and sandwich selections were primo for a grocery store, though I found most of the other sections lacking. I just feel bad for the downtowners who would fly through on the lunch hour. Guess they'll have to settle for some Q at Whole Hog instead. Not that I'd be complaining too much.
