KATV anchor attacked UPDATE

CRIME SCENE: Police look for evidence. Photo by Gerard Matthews
Anne Pressly, 26, a news reporter for KATV who anchored Channel 7's Daybreak show, was assaulted in her home on Club Road in the Country Club neighborhood overnight and suffered serious wounds.
A police spokesman initially said Pressly was "beaten and stabbed" and that her injuries were "life-threatening." The police do not have a suspect.
4 PM UPDATE: Officials remain mum about Pressly's condition, but sources say it is critical. KATV General Manager Dale Nicholson issued this statement about Pressly in the late afternoon. A KATV afternoon report confirmed a source's report to us that Pressly's injuries seemed due to "blunt force trauma," a beating so severe that it tore skin. She may not have been stabbed.
Police were called about 5 a.m. Her mother, Patricia Cannady of Little Rock, had found her in bed suffering from severe injuries about 4:30 a.m. Neighbors said it was her mother's custom to make a wakeup call to her daughter each morning and she went to check on her when she did not answer the call. Another neighbor returned Pressly's dogs (two cocker spaniels, according to her KATV webpage) to the home early this morning. They'd apparently been let loose some time during the night. Police said Pressly's purse was missing, which raised robbery as a potential motive. There were no signs of forced entry at the home, police said.
Police said Pressly was last seen in good health with friends about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. She'd attended a birthday party at a restaurant, KATV said later.
The initial police report said Pressly was unconscious when they arrived and that there were signs of broken bones, severe lacerations and possible internal injury. The officer who responded observed bleeding from her head. Further report indicates severe facial and head wounds. There's speculation that she could have been asleep when attacked and unable to run or defend herself.
KATV's report on the assault said police were interviewing friends about whether Pressly had ever mentioned being threatened or stalked, but a police spokesman told KTHV there'd been no reports of stalking by Pressly.
Pressly lived alone in the rented house in the 4900 block of Club Road, which, on account of many larger homes nearby and the poximity of the Country Club of Little Rock is one of the city's most expensive neighborhoods. Initial police reports and neighbors said Pressley was taken to St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center for treatment. KATV staffers were gathered there during the day. A hospital spokesman twice denied that "a person by that name" was a patient there and provided no information on her condition.
The crime had earmarks of a targeted act against a single person. The police have told the local neighborhood association, however, that patrols in the area will be increased until a suspect is arrested.
Pressly has a small role in the current movie, "W," Oliver Stone's portrayal of George W. Bush. She played commentator Ann Coulter in the movie, much of it filmed in Shreveport.
Pressly is a South Carolina native who moved to Little Rock when she was in high school and attended Pulaski Academy. She was a graduate of Rhodes College. More information about her here from KATV. She anchored the KATV morning show.
UPDATE: Her family has issued a statement saying they are hopeful of a full recovery.
Photos below show her at work and, in a photo taken by the Times' Patrick Jones, at a recent fashion show for charity at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.

Remember, DBI, even the person who did this is innocent until proven guilty. At which point the court should sentence them to being run over by a bus. Maybe several buses.

Hope she makes a speedy recovery. I watch her show every morning on KATV. I hope whoever did this spends a long time in jail. Of course, since our county jails are so overcrowed, they'd be out in no time. This is sad.

Squirrel,
The person who did this is guilty at the point in time that they did the deed.
In a court of law they would be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

From the length of time that's elapsed apparently she's been stabilized and hopefully internal wounding is being repaired as we wait. If the assailant didn't stab her liver then she should survive. Damn, damn, damn! Pray to god, allah, and zeus that her lungs were not punctured causing her oxygen to dip so low that brain damage set in.
You guys can say what you wish but I'm glad my sweetie has her own two pistols and knows how to use them.

Why am I wondering if her role as Ann Coulter had anything to do with this crime. I know it isn't likely, and there was evidence of a robbery, but I've seen some rwingers who are just as convinced as Al Qaeda that they speak for God and are on a mission ordained by God. Nothing surprises me anymore other than the continuing stupidity of our citizenry.

I have been fortunate enough to have worked with Anne Pressly on a couple of fund-raisers and to have bumped into her socially a few times. She is smart, kind and engaging person, and I know she is very well respected by her peers. More accomplishments and polish than your average 26-year-old.

I got this from a neighbohood alert somewhere in the heights forwarded to me...pretty good information. I guess I'll have to go out and buy a gun, or hope my wife can still swing the skillet...
Anyways, prayers sent for Anne, her family, her KATV co-workers, friends, and the LRPD to catch this guy (or guys)!
Lessons to be learned:
NEVER open your door to anyone you don't know after dark!
Call the police FIRST to report ANY suspicious person on your property, and THEN go investigate.
Keep your doors and widows locked, even in the "safe" area of the heights.
Always charge/keep your cellphones in the bedroom.
Reinforce your doors with good locks and large, 160degree+ view-angle peepholes. (about $50-85)
IF someone wants to come in and use your phone (often a ruse to gain entry), HAND them a portable (not your cell) or better yet, offer to make the call for them.
If they don't leave, or try to force entry, ALWAYS have either:
1) the proper tools capable of neutralizing the attack, and the training necessary to operate that "tool" or;
2) the physical strength, stamina, and determination to stop violent attack until the police arrive.
Don't rely on dogs, mace, or other "feel good" measures to deter a determined, violent, attacker.
(Even though the "experts" recommend a dog for self-defense, in this case, cocker spaniels are poor substitutes)
If you can afford it, install a monitored alarm system and test it yearly.
Re-evaluate your exterior lighting and vegetation around the house to make your house unattractive to robbers/burglars.

Thanks, boomer, that's excellent advice. However, I'd amend the first one (about not opening doors) by striking through the two words "after dark." NEVER open your door to strangers, period.

It is ridiculous that advice like that has to be circulated. What kind of city do we live in that requires residents to live in fear. We laughed at pictures in the same neighborhood of an expensive SUV on blocks but don't consider nonviolent crime a problem.
Mayor Stodola lauds his administrations drop in violent crime but fails to mention the surge in nonviolent crime.
It doesn't take long for the criminals to become worse and progress from petty crime to violent crime.
And then we are forced to live in fear as captives in our own houses.
It's time for a change in leadership in Pulaski County.

eLwood has a point in that the "golden hour" after trauma is critical and often surving that is a good marker for survival. Obviously 6 hours is better than one.
Unfortunately, the severity of the injury cannot always be based on that and clearly this is a terrible life threatening injury.

I hate it very mush. Maybe she'll wake up and identify her attackers.
And for sure young women you have no business living alone. YOU will become a bulls eye.
You never know if a gun or any weapon would have helped because she may have been attacked before she could think about defending herself.
A woman who once lived here move to LR after her husband died and a black man went in her house in the daytime and raped her more than once and if she hadn't taken the chance and ran outside she probably wouldn't be alive today.. When she ran out of her house naked where she ran into the former governor Frank White who tried to catch the rapist but was not able to catch him.

When you make such a profoundly wreckless statement such as:
"And for sure young women you have no business living alone..."
Then you really have no business thinking that anything you say in relation to anything, period, has even a trace of significance or adherence to the real world where the rest of us reside.
I truly hope that Anne pulls through.

This wasn't random crime, and this sort of thing can happen anywhere. You aren't an iota safer chasv, wherever you live.
A beautiful young woman in the public eye like Anne Presley who is single and lives alone is a target. This kind of thing never happens in the Heights or similar neighborhoods. There is a reason it happened to who it happened to, there has to be.
I have a strong feeling we'll find out this is someone who knew her, or at least had approached her and behaved suspiciously before. I hope when they find him, he gets the worst the law has to offer.

A little self-control in this tragic situation would be helpful. CC's comment reads like just another cheap shot too good to resist. Politicians (and their supporters) do this all the time when they want to make baseless allegations against their opponent. "I'm sure this isn't true but yada yada yada . . ."

Ok, well to all those who have problems with CiCi's inference that this *could* have something to do with her role in the W movie (something even police investigate because it is part of the facts of her life and therefore has to be considered before being ruled out), you can now direct your anger over such an inference to Drudge who has it listed on the home page, including reference to the W movie.

This is a horrible thing to happen to anybody, regardless of what part of town they live in, their social strata, etc. My prayers are with Ms. Pressley and her family. This sort of violent crime is all too common in our society today and we have all grown somewhat jaded to it. However, no police force can offer absolute protection to it's citizens. Modern law enforcement's role is to investigate the crime, find the perpetrator and make an arrest. As far as personal protection goes, you are pretty much on your own.

My prayers go out to Anne as she fights to recover from this attack. What a shame she didn't have a gun like the men who shot their attackers in last weeks home invasion. Sam Colt made us all equals.
I am disturbed that the LR television news media are being secretive about the location of the attack because it happened to one of theirs in an upscale neighborhood. If this would have occured in O-ninerville in Southwest Little Rock they would have told us the nearest intersection. It would appear that they don't want to alert the folks in the Heights near the Country Club that crime exists in their backyard, too.
A few years ago I was on my way home from work and came upon a police roadblock on Kavanaugh. The officer said that they were looking for a teenager with a gun who had taken a couple of shots at someone. Again, if this would have happened on Baseline Road it would have been breathlessly reported by the media. It happened in the Heights and you never heard a word about it. Sure looks like a double standard.
