OK, let's party
It's on. The first ever official Arkansas Blog Election Watch Party will commence at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the restaurant at Rumba and run until ....
There will be drink and food specials, I've been promised. (I'm lobbying for $1 Heilemann Old Style or something suitably Chicagoan.)
We'll have at least three TVs for multi-taskers. And, if all goes well, we'll do some live blogging and put the blog up on a monitor so you can watch it unfold. Photos might be taken and shared with the universe.
Others are getting election parties on, too. Some Democratically inclined types, our former associate editor Warwick Sabin among them, are setting up a party at the nearby Copper Grill and talking about having Chris Denny and band on hand. The Young Black Professionals and the Black Law Students Association at the UALR Law School will be partying at Juanita's, $5 cover, with a buck off if you bring a canned good.
The Republican Party has invited all comers to their party at the Holiday Inn Presidential. Maybe we can all roll in on them late in the evening.

Comments
I'll see y'all there, but it will not be at 6.

Sounds like fun, but how about a party in Conway for those of us here? Anyone interested? There will be a FCD party but I'm guessing it won't have free/cheap beer or other fermented fruit of the vine.

Golf 43,
A get together really would require getting together. Rumba is 100 yards from "North of the River" and in the same town as "West Little Rock", that sounds like an excellent compromise.
Or everyone could "get together" in a spiritual sense and our minds could congregate yet our bodies will be miles apart.
Nawh, let's just get together at Rumba Revolution.

I've had enough of Diebold, Florida and the Supreme Court stealing elections from the Dems. Let's pull out out Marlin Hawkins ballot boxes and carry Arkansas for Obama!

Well...if you plan to be at the party...you better get in line to vote NOW. Took me 2.5 hours this afternoon...and it was very frustrating...not the waiting...but the people who were "saving" places and letting others come up ahead of those of us who were in line...the people who were talking on their cell phones WHILE AT THE VOTING MACHINE...with oblivious poll workers...the SMOKING in line...all of those irritations that make this country so great! Didn't mind waiting so much as the people breaking in line...and the sad, slow moving poll workers... Oh yes...this was on Barrow Road at the Library!

Dingell to TV News Bosses: Don't Call Election Early
By Ira Teinowitz
The powerful chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., is calling on the national TV and cable news channels to hold off projecting the winner of the presidential election Tuesday night until all polls nationwide are closed.
In letters to network execs, Rep. Dingell calls the election "historic" and expresses concern that any early naming of a winner will depress voting in the rest of the nation.
"It is critical that television coverage of the election results does not serve to depress voter turnout by calling the election for a particular presidential candidate before all polls have closed nationwide," Rep. Dingell says in the letter.

Figured the Arkansas Blog watch party would be held in a basement...since that's where most of its frequent posters are used to operating.

I think Rumba is a good choice, Max! Some space, some tapas, good bar ... overall a winner.
As far as North of the river goes, I think the Ark. GOP has theirs at a hotel just over the river and someplace downtown is the Hayes watchparty. Rumba is a good location for both LR & NLR downtowns. I plan to hit Copper for a bit and maybe bounce between a few but will certainly spend some good time with the blogmeister and crew at Rumba!
Citizen1, don't be too late. There ought to be some early indicators of either a quick night or a LONG night by 7 or 8 CST at the latest.

Ya'll have fun. Relish the moment. Up here in Chickenopolis we'll be having a li'l soiree here at the house. The few local Dems (mostly my family), and some spouses who'll be escaping their REpug significant others' unhappy evening. We've got somebody that'll be working the polls (what the hell's a "stringer"?), and she says she'll give us up-to-the minute info from there. If anybody's in Chickendale (and why would you be?), and you wanna drop by, send me an e-mail (blue name) and I'll give you directions....

Enjoy the parties, folks.
Some of us will still be working at the polls when they close at 7:30 p.m. Anyone in line to vote at 7:30 p.m. is legally allowed to vote before we close out our voting machine totals, but nobody is allowed to get in line after 7:30. Once the last voter has cast his/her vote, our one hour or more of paperwork will keep us there until 8:30 or 9:00 or maybe later. Then it is on to deliver election materials to the area collection point.
After that, it is time to go home and crash after a 14-hour or more long day filled with stress including some voters who don't pay attention to where they are supposed to vote or neglect to update their addresses until election day. Very bad idea as it will slow you and other voters down, and you will pay the price in lost time and maybe having to drive cross town to your correct polling place so your vote will count.
And, yes, some voters will even thank us for working so they can cast their votes.

Well, Sound policy, what are you going to do with all that big money you make from working the polls?

The Rumba---how multicultural. Well, I think that I will come just to ensure the 'diversity' of the gathering. Of course, I will come incognito in the guise of my favorite president---Ronald Reagan. I promise to behave in a conservative sort of way so as not to draw attention to myself. Hope to see you Tuesday night.

Golf, I think you were replying to me. And I don't work for Rumba. I am however fairly outspoken on the nature of food & drink if you read Eat Arkansas at all.
I am sorry if I was not clear - there is a Patrick Hayes watch Party in Argenta, though I do not remember exactly where. If you are willing to go to Argenta, it is but a stones throw over the river to the Copper, Sticky, Rumba, etc. watchparties.
I can't think of any others save the 8 already mentioned.

Cato- re my poll worker pay to be earned Tuesday and how I'll spend it. I don't know. There are so many good options. Let me count the ways.
I could donate it to John McCain and Sarah Palin so they could run even more negative ads, assuming they will still be running them in two or three weeks when the check hits my mail box.
I could send it to the "Clothe Sarah Fund" so she will be appropriately attired for the rest of her life.
I could put it into any of scores of Republican endeavors being spent to disenfranchise voters all across the land. Is that really what Jesus would do?
I could prepay John McCain's first hour in the Old Soldier's Rest Home. His arrival is scheduled for November 5.
I could put Mike Huckabee on payroll after Tuesday's election when his FUXX show is canceled. Who watches that goober?
I could open the first "Dustin McDaniel for Governor" campaign account. Ain't he a smart one (just like George W.)?
I could buy enough watershed land to protect Lake Maumelle here in central Arkansas, the primary drinking water supply for 400,000 people, since Pulaski Co. Judge Buddy Villines and Central Arkansas Water's new CEO Graham Rich haven't shown any interest in protecting the lake.
I could pay his tuition so Warren Stephens could attend a class on economics and learn not to speak ill of the poor and middle class given that Warren was born a billionaire's kid.
But alas, reality sets in, and my poll worker pay for a 14-hour day Tuesday will only go so far. I'd better stop there. What would you do with that much money?

Would anyone be able to tell me if Rumba is a smoking establishment? Or whether there might be a place for me to put up my feet? I'm afraid the excitement of a rowdy evening is not on doctor's orders right now....

Kat, good news. Rumba & the Rev Room are smoke free inside. Folks can smoke on the back patio. Rumba is plenty comfy with booths & tables. Tues nights are usually 1/2 price Tapas.
