Press watch
I note today that the Associated Press, but not the Democrat-Gazette, mentioned that former President Bill Clinton urged people at Obama rallies in Pine Bluff and Jonesboro yesterday to vote AGAINST INITIATED ACT 1.
The proposal would ban private adoption and foster parenting by "cohabiting" unmarried couples. The act makes no reference to sexual orientation. It covers all sorts of couples. The AP, for reasons I don't comprehend, continues to follow the preferred formulation of the Family Council in emphasizing the act would ban adoption and foster parenting by gay couples. Straight couples, significantly, would be affected as well. The AP approach plays into the Family Council's homophobic theme by giving the impression only gay people would be affected.
The AP account this morning was beyond incomplete, however. It was wrong. It said Clinton spoke against "an Arkansas ballot proposal that would ban gays from being foster parents or adopting children." Even gay-hater Jerry Cox of the Family Council would concede the initiative does no such thing. Gay people would still be able to adopt and be foster parents. They would not be able to do so only if, at the time they applied to adopt or foster, they were "cohabiting." (Think of the sex policing the state is going to have to do to get into the question of what constitutes cohabitating, gay or straight variety.)
Simple, accurate, value-free suggestion for AP: describe the act by its ballot title. That is what voters see.

What is the reporter's (Peggy Harris) email address? I would love to set her straight (no pun intended).

I wonder how local AR television news outlets are spinning this initiative? Anyone?
Sorry, we in the ES area only get Springfield, MO, local stations.

Ron Fournier and Liz Sidoti are shameless shills for Palin-McCain.
If there were a push to rid AP of them, I'd surely sign on.

40/29 (Ft.Smith/NWA) is reporting it straight. Calling it Initiative Act 1 saying it seeks to ban unmarried couples.
I don't watch much local TV but I caught that one twice. I awoke late today and didn't check
local tv preachers.
I think Armanie Ronnie had the holy shit scared out of him in '04 when his oblique references to "Vote God" got him an IRS investigation. With the numerous millionaire members he enjoys a loss of 501 (c) 3 designation would have devastated his enterprise.
After pimping for Cheney-Bush I imagine many fundies and faithful Baptists feel raped by the raging Elephant. They got nothing from it but the Worst President Ever. Only the real loonies are on the bandwagon.
Think Hagee, "George Bush was born and bred to fight this war against Islam."
They didn't get an amendment to ban Gay Marriage. A few churches got the
table crumbs called Faith-Based Initiatives which Obama can now put to good use.
All he needs do is change the recipients. Or, he could do what eLwood would do and
send government auditors to check on private sector churches' books.

When we have people in our society who absolutely adds nothing to it; what do you do with it. Like trash you shitcan it.
I don't hate them they just need to know they are the enemies of God.
No child should be punished by having to be raised by homosexuals and lesbians.
IT would be a curse to them 'cause you know they'd know it was a sin to live that way.
We got to draw the line and vote for initiative act. No.1
We are being passive about this now but on Nov. 4th we will cease to be passive.
The more you people promote this act the more people it will being out to vote for it.
I am afraid that you people are going to bring hell up to earth's level.
Jesus said that he is coming to set fire to the world but what will he do if the world is already on burning with fire?

Chasv, when I read the hateful garbage you spew out in the name of God, I can understand very well why many people reject God, Christianity, church.
It is astonishing to me that you claim to be a follower of Christ, and then turn around and judge some fellow human begins as trash to be discarded.
God does not make trash. And only God has the right to judge. Thankfully, She will do so with a far greater measure of mercy than you apply.

Wake up MAN! The world is burning...
"Verily I say unto you, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." (Matthew 16:28)
...
"The Raëlians are working hard to establish an embassy in Jerusalem in anticipation of the 2035 arrival of aliens called "elohim", who will usher in a New Age. However, their arrival is contingent on the completion of the embassy."
...
"The sun will swell into a red giant star, swallowing Mercury, Venus, Earth, and perhaps Mars. This will be the true end of the world!"
Happy Doomsday! Everybody

I'm sure you will conjure up something chasv. I have reservations that god may think you presumptuous to be changing his scenario that way. But, after all, god is only god and you are
chasv!
Thanks for the laughs. I wonder how many enlightened people and professional comics tune in
here to catch chasv remarks? Rich.

There have been a lot of efforts from blogs like firedoglake and others on this front for several months.. It's one of several reasons I really like fdl.. they are very action oriented. He's hasn't been fired yet as best I can tell, but he hardly gets to write an article these days.
And thanks, eLwood.. that's good to hear.

Eureka, thanks for the information about FDL. That's a blog I don't know, but will check it out.
I had noticed Ron Fournier is being silent, but I still sense him pulling a lot of strings behind the scenes. Sidoti still crops up--e.g., in an AP report a week or so ago that McCain and Obama were running neck and neck now.
Studies of that poll showed it comprised about 44% self-identified evangelical Christian voters, whereas the normal percentage of those voters used in polls is 23%.
These folks are just shameless, it seems to me. I certainly don't mind a bias, as long as it's acknowledged. But when it's wrapped up in "objective" figures that are a transparent attempt to spin data on behalf of one candidate, I get perturbed.

ELwood, you had responded to a posting of mine on a previous thread, and it got away with me before I could thank you for your response. If memory serves me, you mentioned that you liked my first-grade story of my classmate who snitched on another girl in the class who prayed with her eyes open.
Glad you liked the story. It was a teaching moment for me--an illustration at an early age of what I have come to learn is a common saying, "Point one finger at someone else and you're pointing three back at yourself."

Here's the link ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4UGBil2M9A ) to the video of Lt. Gov. Halter speaking against Act 1 at the Obama rally in NLR Friday. He was the only speaker there to specificly mention Act 1.
