Astute readers have already mentioned this piece, but Munford Miller recommends it for marquee attention. It's the Rolling Stone throwdown on John McCain.
Title: "Make-believe Maverick: A closer look at the life and career John McCain reveals a disturbing record of recklessness and dishonesty."
The opening anecdote, from a former SAC commander and honored Vietnam POW, is shattering.

I'm actually surprised this story hasn't been more of a story itself. It's a pretty vicious takedown. Interestingly, one of the first big pieces I ever read about John McCain was a l o n g and very sympathetic essay during the 2000 election... in Rolling Stone. When I hear about journalists falling in love with McCain, I think of how he fooled even the brilliant David Foster Wallace (RIP). Granted, Wallace had his reservations, but the essay amounted to a tremendously digressive puff piece.

Thanks for this reminder but our own Norma Bates posted this under an Open Line a couple of days back.

Sadly, only the people who don't need to read this will read it.
Mind you, too, the fact he is an unrepentant, low-down, neo-con, woman-hating, opportunistic, dangerously unstable liar just makes him all the more attractive to a terror-inspiring number of American voters.
That applies in spades to Governor Palin. Check out the huge "Sarah Is For Us" sign (next to the tiny McCain card) in the yard on the north side of Cantrell Road just west of University.

Exactly what I was thinking, Carrick. Aside from the length issue, there's also a big difference between this story and what was essentially a puff piece I saw a few days ago -- maybe in the New York Times, but I'm not sure.

Look...we've all known some McCains in our lives. Frat boys come to mind first. Little short guys always looking for a fight...which is usually fought by their big friends standing over to the side. Rich little freaks of nature. He drove a new Corvette to high school for crying out loud.
He's been a lazy mean punk looking for pssst all his life and if he's quit chasing tail now it's only because his cancer spread to his dick. Years ago I starting paying attention to how his words never matched his voting record....you are dead to me when your words don't match your voting record. Biden has a little trouble with that too if you go check.
McCain has been on the government tit nearly all his life and in between it was his Mama, the North Vietnamese, Charles Keating, or his rich new wife putting food in his stomach. He's a fake, he didn't just turn into a fake....he's been a fake all his mediocre life.

I read the entire article in Rolling Stone; it's an eye-opener, but won't be read by anyone who is pro-McCain.
The Obama camp better be prepared for anything, including a fake terrorist threat. I hope they don't underestimate these crooked bastards.

"Sadly, only the people who don't need to read this will read it."
That's was pretty much my comment after Norma posted it yesterday. The people who need to read it are like Palin--they don't really read anything important.
